After a fabulous walk out along the cliffs this afternoon John and I indulged in a bit of 2mm archeology. I’m sure many older members will remember this layout which dates back well over forty years.
A recent house move by John’s daughter resulted in Bodmine being rescued from seventeen years stored in a damp shed. The corner board and fiddle yard were scrapped some while ago having succumbed to woodworm although the clay dries survive on the Wenford branch. The two main boards looked pretty grim under their layer of assorted grot and spiders webs but, on closer inspection are in surprisingly good condition. Some of the buildings are beyond repair, others just need some tlc and the scenery needs a facelift but mechanically things look promising. Needless to say, a daft plan was hatched to resurrect the layout with a new fiddleyard but otherwise as close to the original as possible.

Jim. Those wheels look superb. Are they the new standard wheels or a special order?

Looking forward now, I have started and/or resumed work on the next set of chassis. Which are planned to be, with the source of the body listed:
LNER
A3/A4 (Dapol)
A1 (Farish)
B1 (Farish/Dapol)
N2 (Shapeways)
J50 (Shapeways) - probably also will do a J6.
O4 (Foxhunter)
K3 - maybe (Shapeways)
SR
V (Schools) for the Dapol body
E1/E1R
MN (Farish)
WC/BB (modified Farish)
Chris
Hi Chris
I'm obviously interested in all the proposed Southern chassis. I'm just puzzled by the E1/E1R, who does a suitable body for these?

Hi Andy
Just stumbled across your thread and I was unable to get to Mike's show due to grandchildren duties all week-end! I wanted to add my congratulations and to add that a friend of mine saw it on Saturday and has given glowing reviews and I must say it looks a superb layout!

Hi Andy
Like exemoordave, I have only just found this thread, Inspirational modelling.
Please post when you next intend to exhibit, if it's atall within reach it would certainly be worth the trip.

We only tend to take photos when the layout is erected. It's not set up permanently. I'm waiting for a chance to photograph a specfic building for an MRJ article. The layout is going up at Keen House soon as we need to do some work on it.
Tim Watson is writing about a new loco for the layout on his workshop thread. When incomplete, the loco was able to pull out entire stock of LNER coaches!
There will be a chance to see the layout at the LT Museum Acton Depot open day on 7th & 8th July.
We always have a "to-do" list and currently it's:
Tube electrics consolidation, extend power supply leads
South leg box power lead 1m longer
Bracket signal for NLR electric lines
Fixing for KX Goods warehouse
Repair UG distant
Support for iPad on middle backscene
Leaflet dispensers
Bracket fixing for south end backscene support
Tighten joints on back scenes
Re- engineer bolt for large hockey stick and linking fiddle yard boards
Loop catch to hold north end of Tube board to HB section and drape
Train detection N & S end main lines
Drape pop-stud missing from front corner of Sopwith Camel board
Burger van box framing split on one corner - display board now very loose
Now some of this is our in-house jargon. The layout will absorb an infinite amount of small details and if anyone would like to make, say, a 1925-1935 era road vehicle or some other appropriate model, it would be very welcome. It doesn't necessarily need to be very highly detailed as it can be placed so as to give the impression of activity. A lot of the layout is simplified as it recedes to the backscene. If we hadn't done this, the thing would never have reached the stage it is today! The running lines are two scale miles long.
Mark
"Tim Watson is writing about a new loco for the layout on his workshop thread" I have been unable to find this thread, could you point me in the right direction please.

My apologies - may I provide an interlude to keep you entertained in the meantime?
Many thanks. It's nice to know that you are still there. Frankland has been an inspiration to so many of us.

Hi Pete,
SWAG is an RMWeb group and encompasses all scales. There is an annual get together in Staplegrove village hall, Taunton, April 29th this year, started by Captain K and now organised by Stu. It's free to all RMWeb members and is a splendid day out. I usually provide some 2FS presence, either a layout or, as this year, a demo with test track. Would be great if you or any other 2mm member could join us and do bring along whatever you have built or are working on. John Greenwood often comes up for the day and Phil Coplestone is also a regular.
There isn't a SW area group of the 2mm Association, mainly because the few active members in the area are so spread out. With yourself, Jim A and one or two others now in the SW there may we'll be scope for a group, even if we only meet up informally two or three times a year. Perhaps we could meet up at the RMWeb members day and discuss the possibility?
Jerry
Hi Jerry
Thanks for the info. I will definately make it along to Staplegrove. If I'm not mistaken , our esteemed ex chief shopkeeper, Steve Stubbs, lives just accross the road from the venue.
I have tried to talk Jim A into forming a group, but now with his 2mm Association duties, he probably wouldn't have the time. I ran the K & E Group for a number of years, but think I'm getting a bit old to take on a new group.
Looking forward to meeting up in April.

Thanks Don - I'll see if I can make it 8^) I see there are a number of other activities and meet ups so should be able to make a few
Hi.
I'm also a 2mm modeller and missing the Area group of which I was a member before moving to the SW, Wellington near the Somerset/Devon border.
Can anyone tell me where I'll find details of SWAG and it's activities.

Hi Guy
The wheels that I used may have been 11mm,they did match the Farish ones for overall size, it's nearly 2 years since I did the conversions and my memory is not as good as it was. The locos, as well as all the rest of my modelling gear is in loads of plastic boxes in my new log cabin/modelling room awaiting unpacking in a couple of weeks time.
Good luck with the conversion.

Hi
I've just read my last post and noticed the "drawer" bar. it should read draw bar. The curse of predictive text strikes again.

Hi Nick
Wheels were 10mm, the pony and tender wheels are thinned down Farish to match finescale standards. The other modification that I made was to file away a small area of the chassis blocks to allow a CTELEKTRONICS chip to be mounted in the top of the firebox picking up from both sides of the loco chassis. I also used 2 fine wires to connect with the tender pick-ups through a micro 2 pin connector rather than relying on the drawer bar to transmit power. This means that the loco can be run without the tender attached for testing and I find the wires more reliable than the rubbing contacts on the drawer bar. Another benefit was that it was then easy to make a replacement drawer bar to close the loco to tender gap.
I had intended writing this up for the magazine, but a house move and other thing have got in the way.
I hope this helps. Incidentally I have done Merchant Navy and 4F using the same method with equal success.

I think it was M1, but I can't be certain. I would check for you, but I can't get out to my workshop since sliding on ice on Monday and tearing a hamstring. I will confirm when I get more mobile.
Good luck with the re-rimming.

Hi,
I am planning to convert a farish N class to finescale much as John Greenwood did by fitting 2fs rims to the farish wheels. As these are reasonably fragile, I wanted to get some advice on what turning speeds to use on the wheels - treat them as brass? I'll likely remove one wheel of each wheelset from the axle to hold the wheel boss/bearing surface in a collet. I will freshly sharpen the tool beforehand. I imagine loctite 603 is a good bet to fix the rims to the wheels?
thanks
Guy
Hi Guy
I have converted 3 N Class locos very quickly and easily using the Association "Jinty" conversion bearings and gear with appropriate diameter Association wheels.
To make the conversion even easier, I just tapped the wheels to take the original Farish screw crankpins.
About 3 hours work and you have a nicely running finescale N Class, if you don't mind the overscale valve gear and coupling rods.

Hi,
Favs of mine too. These are the last locos I really really wanted to do 2mm models of. The 'limo cab' version is going together quite well so and I am hopeful that I will be able to produce a worthwhile model from this first test etch, plus some extras from the second test etch.

Hi
Not a favourite of mine, not "Southern", but I love following your builds, I always learn so much. Keep up the good work.

Ian,
Any information about the 'stay alive' used in the Terrier?
David
Ian
I'm also fascinated to know how you fitted in a "stay alive" in the Terrier, I had enough trouble keeping a decoder hidden.

Peter,
Sorry, I meant to include the link to Shapeways:
Ian refers to the conversion article in the Association magazine which I assume is the one that you wrote.
David
David
Thanks.
They seem a great idea, though I'm a little dubious as to how they will wear. I will order some anyway. I was hoping for some etched frames as they would be more accurate and consistent than my hand made efforts.

Alan,
The 04 will be with me at Nottingham on Sunday if you want to have a look, otherwise I can bring them to the NEAG meeting at the beginning of April.
I have just started on a 14xx chassis but this may be pushed backwards by a possible Terrier conversion prompted by the imminent arrival of some of Ian Morgan's 3D printed conversion gears!

David
Could you enlighten us a little more regarding the Terrier conversion. Something I've been hoping for since Dapol introduced the loco.
