The blue-grey HST set is missing a vehicle. Apart from the very brief 1976/77 inception period where there were 2 catering vehicles in Western Region formations, the original WR formation was TF-TF-Buffet-TS-TS-TS-TS. When the the TGS vehicles were built they were added to the sets as a fifth second class coach, so there were still 4 x TS in the formation; but Hornby is only proposing three. The 'executive' livery version gets all four plus the TGS so I'm not sure why the omission.

The Western Region HST's were seven coaches throughout the Blue/Grey era, even after the arrival of the TGS vehicles. Only those sets transferred to the Eastern Region/Midland Main Line would have gained the eighth coach (facilitated by the disbanding of two North-East South-West sets and the building of nineteen additional TS vehicles).

Around ten (TRUB West of England) sets were lengthened to eight coaches around 1986 with spare vehicles (including converted TGS's). By then these were in Inter-City executive colours.

The remaining Western Region sets only became eight coaches in the early nineties following the post East Coast electrification re-allocations.

This video from 1985 helps to clarify the matter.

Heljans not yet announced an 86/2, so i’d guess its at least 2 years before we see it, even if Bachmann did mk2f’s… of course the wild card could be an all new Bachmann class 86.

my thought is buy the Anglia dbso now, and squirrel it away, by the time all the pieces of this puzzle are available, the dbso could be the hardest piece to find.

If you have not done so already you may want to look at the latest addition to the Heljan thread.

I've always gone by train as it's easier (apart from the walk up the hill - but then I do need the exercise!), so I do't know whether park was a problem or not.  My impression was that the cark park at the top looked full, also the road up the hill was so full you'd be unable to park there.

Noting that the Great Northern Inner suburban service to Alexandra Palace is pretty dire at the moment, particularly on Sundays with a combined Welwyn Garden City/Hertford North service of only two trains an hour at 20/40 intervals. Additionally this Sunday trains are being diverted in-to Kings Cross rather than Moorgate.

It seems the real railways are not being helpful this weekend with closures around Woking. Please check if planning to come by train from Waterloo. Trains from the west and down from Reading should be running fairly normally.

Interesting choice of buffers, puts it post privatisation (summer 1994), rather than pre, I guess 1994 - 2003… A good choice for VT passenger services, and covers its longest period of running in that livery.

90029 has always been an odd one out..

As built as 90029 in Mainline it ended up in Freight mostly from 1988-1992, despite having the passenger fittings / rubbing plate.

Yet after becoming a 90/1 in DB livery and having its rubbing plates removed Its moved upto being a long term passenger service hire-in for much of its life, firstly to VT upto 2003, renumbered back to 90/0 and EWS livery, then the Pretendolino and then on the Sleeper.

In 2012 it was the first one in (Official UK) DB livery  and moved to the ECML until very recently, 2019.

its now in Grand Central currently.. another odd ball livery.

    Colourful history, literally.

An interesting find this weekend - even if 90029 wasn't the main focus of the video.

  6. Hornby have produced this (as in Diagram 73 FO). Still no 'Raspberry Ripple' version though - despite being widely anticipated for 2022.

Also noting that the Maroon, Blood and Custard, and Chocolate and Cream Hornby versions were all fitted with BR1 bogies - the latter two liveries for this coach type would only be applicable to current charter operation as they were built post 1956. Therefore they should have been fitted with Commonwealth or B4 bogies.

I didnt quite get the interest in this set myself…

a one off rake for 1 week in service, 2 years ago.

its marginal for me at best, the recent price increase moved it off the edge it was clinging too on my radar, but seeing that image just makes me laugh at it.

tbh I hope its just a few, as really its a faulty reject and should be sent back.

if all the coaches are like that, who is going to buy the £300 power cars ?

So the 31/1 thats a 31/4, the GBRF ‘s 50’s that are a more Tangerine less Tango.. the 60 with misprint logos and now these…

There is a distinct pattern forming here..

And also not forgetting the 'glow in the dark' DVT's.

Incidentally did Hornby not check these (as in the LNER farewell Mk3's) before they went out?

EDIT I wonder if this is one particular factory?

These will be Hornby's first attempt at Commonwealths, I believe.  If they are up to the standard of the very good Collett 7' bogies that were attached to my 57' Suburbans, they'll be very good indeed; I reckon these are the best RTR bogies I have ever had and they have the edge on most kit bogies as well!

I believe they have already made an appearance on the blue/grey FO, also on the Flying Scotsman and Duchess of Sutherland (BSK) support coaches.

Just seen a couple of these, which both have warped bogie side frames, has anyone else had this issue with Hornby MK1s and would it be fixable?

    Simon

Yes I noticed that (maybe having looked at the same image as yourself).

Possibly a QC issue in that the factory didn't let the plastic fully 'cure' before taking it out of the mould? (Someone may be able to advise.)

Hoping this doesn't happen on the forthcoming RBR (even though that has Commonwealth rather than B4 bogies).

    Hi folks,

I see that the latest release of the Hornby MK3 Buffet car has appeared in the shops.

It has a full yellow banding along its length, ie no red band above the buffet part of the coach.   I know the era for this particular release is a later one, ie 1990's (the power cars have the new over head warning flashes and the coaches the orange door locking lights).   But did HST MK3 ever run with a full length yellow banding along the top of the coach/roof?

I also see Hornby have released it with a plain roof.   no roof vent detailing.   When will they learn?.....they managed to give us the ECML Virgin coach with correct roof detailing, so why not this? sigh!

Anyway, any help on the yellow band would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Is it my imagination or has history just repeated itself again?

o.k. no full yellow banding this time but no roof vents and the 'external' handrail in the buffet counter area.

Yet the recent Hornby (NOT reheated ex Lima) GWR TRFB (as well as the East Coast Virgin/LNER ones) are correct. despite the stories about the original Hornby TRFB tooling being damaged beyond repair.

Can I assume that the Swallow ones without the roof vents come from a different factory?

Luckily these aren't on my wish list but I thought it is worth mentioning.
