  1. Hornby look like they are doing a good job of this 4 VEP

hopefully it will be much better than the toy like Hitachi 395

with the Bachmann items and Scenecarft art deco staions, there must be a graet number of southern electric layouts being constructed

  2. I have to say that these are rather nice Models. Only wanted the coaling tower really as i used to be a Carnforth regular, but just had to get that engine shed as well after seeing some pictures in the mags earlier in the year. Plan was to show the loco shed as a derelict like at Bescot, but having now seen it, am trying to think of a way to include it in the operational layout somehow. The roof glazing is too nice to destroy and turn into a hulk.

I had a relative collect mine from one of the big dealers in the north of the country as i had read the Bachmanns statement on their website

“Due to the size, complexity and delicate nature of this product, we strongly advise that is it purchased over the counter or collected from your approved Bachmann Retailer, rather than purchased via a mail order serviceâ€

Having now got them home, I think it was one of the best things i ever did as the size and weight of the boxes, the brittleness (is that a word?) means that it would almost certainly be destroyed accidentaly by any delivery company. Realise i am lucky to have a large family all over the UK, but would advise anyone yet to buy one these models to try a closer model shop, who may match prices, rather than going for a kit sent in the post, if suitable relatives / work colleagues are not conveniently situated.

  3. This looks like an awesome model, But the delivery charge to Australia will stop me buying it, 30gbp, Most local from the box shifters are under 10 gbp to post to Australia,

    Gary in Tasmania

but i guess you will save the VAT costs that us Brits have to endure.

prabably save you around ??14 off the rrp, you will save the ??4.70 p&P as well.

    Hope you are the Summer!

the sun has made an appearance in the wintery UK today

  4. On the Bachmann homepage, details of the new Coaling Tower

    http://www.Bachmann.co.uk/

There are 2 fully coloured 3d model pictures showing the various ladders and railings, and two of the master sculpture before first moulding.

Due to arrive in 2nd Quarter.

Oh dear, a duplication with Hornby. Seems that both companies had this item in development at the same time.

However, I think I will be going for the Carnforth model as I remember it so well from the days when they used to coal the Engines working the "Cumbrian Coast Express"

  5. At the end of the day if the price is too high it will just mean it takes longer to sell out...

Considering the deltics origonal release (which iirc was around the ??100 mark) thats about ??40 over the price of a normal diesel loco from Bachmann. This also had the advantage of reusing chassis components from the 37 and standard deltic. Considering that the new A2 is around ??120, and CoT doesnt reuse any other components, I dont think that 160 odd is that bad relatively speaking in being only ??46 more than new steam locos in the 09/10 range, despite the fact that it requires a completely new tooling for everything.

Will certainly be interesting to see if Bachmann do end up following it up with a normal range city (they'd be mad not to...) but I suspect that it would certainly be a couple of years before it happens so that the NRM can get a decent return on their investment.

It certainly would' nt surprise me to see a 2nd batch come out late next year in current condition (with OHLE flashes etc and a slightly darker chassis) which would be suitably different to this release not to **** off the collector types. That black/green version would be another candidate.

Personally I would be quite happy to see it sell a bit slower than the Deltic as I have decided I will not order until I know if wheels will fit, but I suspect that it will be sold out by Christmas!

I think you will find that the Branchline DP1 model was also brand new from the wheels upwards. Chassis is a different length to a class 37 and service delitic. the bogies were unique on the original and the model followed suit. DP1 hardly shared anything in common with the production fleet. The motor was probably about all that was the same on the model, i'll check when i get home!

I think you are crack on with other Citys being released at some point in the future, but as you rightly say, probably leave it for a few years. I know the NRM is always struggling for cash since they stopped charging for admission. It is a cause worth supporting, but i like the idea of waiting for the more modern version with the new OHLE flashes. good idea, i'll hang on.

  6. Here we go, new models are announced and we get the usual comments about costs.rolleyes.gif

You get what you pay for.

This is a one off model only available for a short time, it won't be in catalogues for years to come like other models.

No doubt if it had been ??60 people would then be commenting on the lack of detail or quality etc.

Everyones got a choice, if you don't think its worth ??195 or ??145 then don't buy it.

Personally I think it is worth the premium to get something like this.

So I have put my money where my mouth is and just ordered one of each.

Nice lady at NRM stated both the Platinum and Standard edition are due in the next 28 days.

You sir, are a very realistic person. A refreshing change and pragmatist. I can't really afford one right now, but would love to obtain a Platinum edition as an investment as well as nice model to enjoy on my layout.

  7. I heard from Bachmann at the end of October that Tornado was in production, however a chat with Rails of Sheffield yesterday (model available from other retailers as well!) suggested that it was unlikely to be here by 25 December. However a post by Chameleon on the A2 Thread suggests its a couple of weeks away.

    Any other updates?

At any rate, I've now given up waiting for Bachmann... I'm playing with Tornado on Friday on my local 'layout'. (known as the ECML, and playing should more accurately be riding being... 1:1 scale of course!)

Bachmann's delivery schedule on newly tooled models seems to be highly variable (at least systematically late was reliable!) - in the last week we've had the 4CEP (2 or three years wait possibly a record) and the 3mt (10 months wait! - must be one of the quickest releases of recent years), while the A1, only needing a tender retool is not here, and the A2 (announced last July) is not here. Still, it keeps things interesting!

also, I think that the 2009 Branchline announcements and releases were not made until March this year, so anything announced then has got the best part of 3 months to get here and still be released within a calendar year. am prepared to be corrected on that tho. am sure my Branchline catalogue arrived in March.

  8. Just got my copy of Model Rail. A nice article on the City of Truro loco and a brief run down of models produced. the last paragraph hints at a forthcoming model to be released soon! Well, I have a friend who is a member of the Bluebell Railway and I remember him telling me that a model manufacturer was measuring the loco when it visited the railway back in 2006. That seems to tie in with an iminent release date.

He would not tell me who the manufacturer was, but hinted that they were based closer to the Bluebell, rather than farther!

Which suits me very well given the track record of the closer company. One of the "Big Two"
