iThe seller seems to misunderstand the difference between, "It cost" and "It's worth".
The rolling stock might have cost £300, but would be worth about half of that second hand*; you lose the 20% VAT as soon as you hand over the money.
Being a solid block 8' x 4' will make it next to impossible to transport. (I had to dismantle our divan to get it in the house for example and that is only 7' long.)
* Or less! Nobody wants those awful Hornby 4 wheel coaches even as a gift!
I picked up one of the 'Dowlais' 0-4-0Ts at a boot sale for £2 (A coupling was broken and she lacked a smokebox door but...). A local charity had one, but they wanted £15, though I believe there was some other stuff included.
Nevertheless, 'The best of Luck!'
I reckon some folk just mistake where they put the decimal point

I'm watching this with interest, no one's opened the bidding yet at £399

Sorry if this question has been asked previously in the 74 pages here, but has anyone noticed a tangible benefit from the show, like increased sales of modelling magazines, increase in people wandering into model shops or attendance a exhibitions?

This dismantling of locomotives and the selling of parts for ridiculous amounts is beginning to get beyond a joke, it really winds me up.

Television viewers have been conditioned to expect "false jeopardy" in all dramatic documentaries.
Just filter it out, like the continuity problems. You can't expect an industry that prides itself in "telling the story" without too many facts getting in the way to stick to a reasonable timeline.
Just a thought. If the Royal Scot had a firebox cool enough for the fitter to get inside, examine it for a leak and replace the fusible plug (where did the spare come from btw), how long would it take to raise steam to working pressure (let alone "over 100psi")?
About 40 minutes according to the program. Good tele though and excellent promotion of the railway.

So where was it shot then?
-
Yup, the weird train spotter.
-
Bet the murderer turns out to be the weird train spotter

Thought it was mid Hants.

Do you think some sellers deliberately take photographs of locos with the tender coupled the wrong way around to convey the impression that they know little about model trains and we could get a bargain, or Is it a genuine error - frequently made,

You'd be really upset if a well meaning relative bought you one of these.

At one point it was said the railway modelling is the second most popular hobby in the UK - is this true?

If these production runs are as few as is being suggested I can't see how Hornby, or other manufacturers for that matter can make significant amounts of money, take off 20% vat all the production costs, profit for the retailer even if they were coming away with a profit of £20 per item you're not meeting the salary of one member of staff.

Why have they all got holes for the fitting of vacuum pipes when I can't remember any of them being so fitted?
-
Slightly off topic, I know they've been there for years but I always thought Margate was a daft place for a visitor centre. It's quite out of the way and no one's going to visit from the sea. Birmingham - Manchester, Leeds easy to get to for millions of folk

Yep.
I did have a what the <oops> moment until I read it properly.
Do you think they intended it to say Tornado but couldn't spell?

I never fail to be amazed at the intricate liveries on model railway items, the lining is perfect and commendably thin and often in such difficult places. How do they do it so accurately?
-
I've got a chair from the Croesor tramway.

In 2012 circulation of RM was 43,328 average per issue according to Abc stats, the 800th anniversary special supplement mentions a figure of over ninety thousand circulation in 1979.
I too think RM is in good order, I buy it every month without fail.
Cheers,
Keith
Thanks for that Keith,
43,000 is quite an impressive circulation didn't realise there were that many modellers.

I've not missed many issues since 1969 and I have to say it's far better now than in was perhaps 10 years ago, I too hope to see the 1000th edition. Wonder what the circulation is?

I would have thought the booklet would be in the online download site, as other booklets have been.
No, it's not there.

Do digital subscribers not get the free commemorative booklet?

Amazing that they've either sold or bought nearly 600 items and have 100% positive feedback, perhaps they've only just started trying to sell junk at inflated prices.
