  1. Can anyone post a photograph (or a link to a photo) of a Southern Railway liveried Union Mills loco - either T9 or 700 class? Please.
  2. Thanks for the photos Matt. Colin produces superb locos and it is great to see your photos and that the models are appreciated.
  3. If extended to Guide Bridge the Piccadilly-Guide Bridge Metrolink journey would include nine intermediate stops and numerous road crossings. The journey would take considerably longer than the 10/11 minutes for heavy rail and journeys from stations further east far too long and slow. Not a good idea!
  4. Wasn't suggesting Metrolink's fare structure would deter expansion, merely that fares would rise sharply. Tram-train has been mooted from time-to-time for the Rose Hill branch.
  5. I don't know about the operating economics, but the journey times would likely increase and the fares would rise very sharply as Metrolink is pricey compared to GMPTE-specified rail.
  6. Thanks for the links. I had completely forgotten about the 'promenade' at Crowden.
  7. Is there an element of artistic licence in the poster artwork? I have walked the Longdendale Trail (the former railway) from Hadfield to Woodhead several times and do not recall any section where the railway ran so close to water's edge.
  8. That will be some serious repair bill. Regarding our lack of manufacturing skills and capacity, I couldn't agree more. More than centuries ago the economist Adam Smith saw where we were heading when he wrote The Wealth of Nations and observed: To found a great empire for the sole purpose of raising up a people of customers, may at first sight, appear a project fit only for a nation of shopkeepers. It is, however, a project altogether unfit for a nation of shopkeepers, but extremely fit for a nation whose government is influenced by shopkeepers. Government has been malignly influenced by shopkeepers of one sort or another for a very long time: giving buying and selling priority over manufacturing.
  9. In places the line remaining open west of the Pennines has a strange 'abandoned railway' feel, even though it is a fairly busy commuter railway. I find this particularly evident east of Guide Bridge. Catenary masts spanning long-abandoned quadruple track or branching off to sidings, such as at Mottram, or stations such as Newton or Broadbottom that still retain the feel of a local station on a main line all exude a sense of abandonment.
  10. Does anyone have an up-to-date list of what models are currently available from Union Mills?

Sound point. Sometimes being very myopic has distinct advantages, such that I am able to enjoy my hobby largely oblivious of the legions of inaccuracies that evidently torment others.
  12. Nostalgic photos Derek. I cannot see myself there, but recall I took some shots (of the pair of 25s) from a similar vantage point to you - and was on the train by the time the 76 was backing on.
  13. My only journey over the Hadfield-Penistone section was on the LCGB's 'Easter Tommy' special (April 1981), which turned out to be the last passenger train to run over the line. Sorry for the poor quality of the photograph, which was taken at Penistone.
