Good to hear Arcadia is still going and with the usual level of service, coffee etc, also good to hear he's now doing secondhand as well.  I started using Arcadia back in 2001 when modelling European, SNCF, and Tim was always a real Gent.  I will make the effort to go back next time I'm in the north west.  

Had a trial for Lancashire many moons ago (1977) but didn't get selected.

This is an extremely interesting test match brought to life once again by the excellent commentary from TMS, those guys really are the cream of broadcasting. Even if you didn't like or understand cricket, listening to TMS is one of the few entertaining things the BBC puts on! Listening to Geoff Boycott, Phil Tuffnell, Michael Vaughan and Sunil Gaviskar really does make my day!

Smart move Mike, this is how myths arise The two things are not remotely connected I'm afraid, apart from concerning the same class of loco - the Haresnape book does have a pic of a Pilot Scheme loco at Fort Will, I know that without looking, it's D5511 IIRC - but the uprated machines (1600hp/2000hp) were a later batch and used solely on the ER, notably on the Sheffield Pullman workings which were a regular use for new or experimental types

Just caught up with the thread again, thanks for the info Pennine MC, until last month I had no idea that 31s had appeared on the WHL. We now have photographic evidence and a primary source (Albert) to say it happened.

Does anybody have any photos of the BTH on the GNSR system?

Can someone do a picture of an A1 and A2 side by side - I'm struggling to see the difference.

Here we are Sweeps, the A2 is on the left the A1 on the right. Despite the niggling problems aleardy mentioned I'm very happy with the two models.

60528 suffers from the distortion more conspicuously than 60537. On my example of '528, there is a fore to aft downward kink on the fireman's side and a slight dip ahead of the motion bracket on the driver's side. It doesn't seem to have any effect on the contact of the wheels with the ground although the spring tension on 60528's bogie looks like it could use a little adjustment as the leading pair of drivers are slightly raised.

I'll be giving the locos a test run on the rollers shortly to confirm the satisfactory running of the locos.

In spite of the niggle highlighted here, I really do like these models.

I'm with Dave on this, the A2s really look nice models. I'm off into Glasgow tomorrow to try and get Bachelors Button, hope D&F models have got one!

Picked one up from D&F Models in Glasgow, the all green version. As I asked to see it one of the assistants called Albert said "he wants one that was up here on trials". Albert then informed me one was used as a trials loco at Kittybrewster in 1958-9 along with some of the other type 1 locos to see which was the best on the old GNoS lines. The class 20 was picked but several others did trails. He also said that the Golden Ochre Class 31 was trialled on the West Highland line. Now I've never heard of this before but Albert is an old railwayman and can actually give you the numbers of the locos that were used. An excellent assistant at an excellent shop, I'm sure he has other very important info for us modellers, so bear it in mind if you ever shop in Glasgow.

Excellent portrayal of Rannoch station, especially the station building and the long sweeping reverse curve throught the station. I don't have any pictures of Rannoch platform, and your portrayal of the brick facia looks excellent, but here's a couple of photos of Tyndrum Upper and Garelochead for comparison:

The chap who sells the GEM kits is very approachable and helpfull (Very satisfied customer) have a chat with him. The L1 chassis needed I think is the older version (there may not be a newer version!) GEM did do a replacement chassis for the L1 and these do come up on Ebay as do the Hornby L1 chassis, it might be cheaper buying a loco snd reselling the body and tender back on Ebay.

 

Markits sell the Romford replacement axles so you can fit their wheels which would be a great improvement if you use finer scale wheels.

 

The Gem kits fit together very well, take your time fitting the chassis to the footplate and when fitting the cab/firebox, boiler etc check the clearencer around the motor. The LNWR livery can be painted with a couple of spray cans from Halfords, but finish off with a satin varnish. Good luck and keep us informed.

many thanks for all your advice, including editing the original post! I'll take your advice and go for a Prince of Wales married to a B12 chassis. This will be my first ever kit so I'm excited, and apprehensive, at the same time but the Prince of Wales looks a fine loco and not too expensive so, with care and a B12 chassis I should, I hope, be able to do a reasonable job of it.

Hello, I have been interested in the GEM LNWR kits since I first saw them advertised as a lad in the mid 70s. I believe I read then that they could be fitted to several triang chassis that were still common around the 70s. I'm still keen on them and ready to take the plunge with their body kits; my question is, are there any modern RTR chassis that could be married up to the body kits and has anyone tried it? In particular I'm interested in the 0-6-0 Cauliflower class and the Watford (coal) tank.
