  1. The first wagon finished was the 4w Hudson steel open, known as RAF’s on the Ffestiniog Railway. Numerous of these wagons were used on the Deviation and other P-Way work for years, and sometimes still are, although more modern wagons have taken over.

This particular wagon represents No.89, based on a couple of photos found online, and is one of the more rusty examples! The basis of the model version is a PVMR kit version released around a decade ago and consisted of a one piece 3D printed body supplied via Shapeways. The grain of the print was useful for the rusty texture.

I bought the wagon for a bargain £5 from the members to members stand at the National Garden Railway show. It had a terrible twist in the body and looked it had had a hard life. I’ve managed to remove most of the twist which involved fitting a new floor. The finish was achieved using the LifeColour range of acrylics and powders.

A load of old ballast and sleepers have been fitted as a load and adds a bit of much needed wait. This area ideally needs more work with ballast and debris between the load to give more life. At the moment it’s just too neat, especially for a wagon in this condition! I hope to add more RAF’s to the fleet at some point but these will have to be from the Resurgam kit.

    Until next time!

  2. My main modelling scale these days is 16mm scale, 32mm gauge, so I thought I’d share some of my work in the Garden Railway section that seems a little unloved! Like many I’m a big fan of the F&WHR, and recently concentrated on building some suitable rolling stock out of the pile sat in the cupboard! It’s all about the wagons at the moment, as building coaching stock isn’t something I’m look forward too! (Although a Curly rood brake Van kit is staring at me viciously out of the kit cupboard!)

Currently on the bench is a 4w RAF, a Bogie Hudson ‘LoCoal’ and a 3t slate wagon. Both the bogie Hudson and Slate wagon are from the excellent range of Resurgam Rolling stock kits. Some non FR projects can be seen in the background!

    More Soon!

  5. Thank you :) Great help. As my wagon will be built for a freelance theme I don't mind the different chassis type, it was the basis of how the buffers were mounted than anything.

    Thnaks again.

    Jack

  6. I've just ordered a contractors side tipping wagon, and some J94 bits, and wondering if anyone has a link for a photo of one of the wagons fited with conventional buffering gear? As I'll proberaly need to fit such things!

    Thanks

    Jack
