Called into Bourton model centre earlier, the reason for the sale is it’s closing down at the end of the month so it’s 30% off all rolling stock, 20% off accessories and 50% off the Hornby steampunk range (£18 for a loco, use file for the chassis maybe

they said they are all in the website and can be bought from there

Thanks Jim. Just bought sound fitted Bachmann 32-740SF Class 66/7 667789 British Rail Large Logo for £175 which seems reasonable.  They seem to be still in stock.

Paul is correct, with the insulation and lining the temperatures in the shed are more temperate, certainly compared to the loft my original Exford layout was housed in! Now in the shed when its hot you can open the door and windows for ventilation, and when its cold a fan heater warms it up relatively quickly and the insulation keeps the heat in for longer. I also enjoy the headroom!;)

The double glazed windows and security door, plus the shed being part of the house alarm system, gives me peace of mind when away from home.

Very helpful (and reassuring). Thanks to you and the other responses to my comment.

Another one to add. Some of the Merchant Navy locos are on the list already but I have just found my United States Lines 35012 from the Orient Express set has the bogie rot issue - just fell apart in my hands. I don't think the loco has a catalogue number but the box set is R1038.

An update. A photo below of the affected part from the Merchant Navy US Lines. I contacted Hornby in May asking about replacements. They replied they were waiting for stock and after a few chases I got confirmation that they are back in stock now and 2 replacement bogies arrived just before Christmas.

  4. Thanks for the reply and your patience in answering questions. All wired up as per the left hand drawing.

I connected the lamp in effect between C and D.  I tried swapping b and d over; the problem did move to the other LED. I will just try reversing the LED polarity although I'd already swapped the LED out so would have to have got it wrong twice.  WIll also replace the resistor. It's all good practice!

I have run out of decoders so I will order a couple more and try a new one as well.

  5. Hi all,

Follow up to the request for help.

I managed to wire up a TCS M1 decoder with the harness cut off and the loco runs (well). I even wired up some new LEDs for the headlights with a resistor on each. However ... whilst the light at one end works fine (only on in direction of travel) the other end doesn't work at all. The LED is definitely working. One curious thing (which to anybody with an understanding of electronics may help) is that placing two wires and a bulb across the + and - wires leading to the LED result in the LED turning on. Any ideas please?

  6. Hi,

Please could anybody point me to a few pics or video that explain how to DCC fit this Hornby 56. The motor and wiring looks rather different to the guides for fitting DCC to Ringfield motored locos. I can't see any guides on here that show this particular type.

    Thanks

Yep I’ve got a running layout so I’m happy :)

    All round to yours then?

Seriously though I see a few Rhatische Bahn books on the shelf. Any you'd recommend please? I assume they are all in German?

  8. Unwrapped my largo logo version this morning with some trepidation considering all the comments. On the plus side there don't seem to be any loose bits on my model but does look like the couplings are upside down.

I haven't seen many photos of this version so here is one.

Am I right in saying that I can fix the headcode light issue with some CV changes (CV33 and 34? for a Hattons DCR chip).

  9. For anybody thinking of fitting a sound decoder to their thumper I can highly recommend bif's version. Takes a bit of getting used to in order to get the engine revs up without the unit speeding up but I like it so much I leave it ticking over even when not in use (and I can't help but set the compressor running rather more often than necessary). I just wish I'd got the sound decoder fitted to my second one too.

  10. My supply of Bachmann 36-557 decoders arrived this afternoon and pleased to advise that once fitted to #1 and Sherlock Holmes both locos performed impeccably.

Many thanks guys for your help.

    Keith

Thanks Keith. And just to close out my report I have installed a Hattons own brand 21 pin decoder and that too works just fine.  So looks like only Hornby Sapphire chips to avoid.

  11. Sounds good Pete - You cant beat the NSE days you know it makes sense!!

I will start saving now ready for another purchase ha ha.

Good luck with this new venture.

    All the best

I think you must have too many layouts by now, no? I think it should stay closest to the real location but I would say that at just under 4 miles according to google.  :blind:

  12. Thanks. I like the grey roof better than the reddish one on the one I got; John Hampden.

I gave mine a test run today. Fine in DC but on two different DCC chips it only runs properly in one direction. In the other direction it runs for a second, stops, runs for a second, stops, repeats this about half a dozen times then refuses to move at all. Same on rolling road so not a pickup issue.  Also had one of the gear cogs clicking and jumping occasionally.

It will be on its way back to the shop on Monday for an exchange.

An update on my issue (and related to Tetsudofan/Keith's by the look of it).

My original one has gone back and the replacement arrived this morning having only been ordered on Saturday (well done Hattons). I dropped in a chip and had exactly the same problem as described above, only this time in both directions. Setting the speed to 6/28 or below means it crawls round the layout without exhibiting the same behaviour but a nudge up to 7 and we're back to above.

Both of the chips I tried were Hornby Sapphire which run well in everything else I own (and are handy as they can be 8 or 21 pin).  So, I thought I'd extract a 21 pin sound decoder out of a Bachmann loco and with that the Bo-Bo runs perfectly in both directions.

So conclusion is that the loco does not like certain chips for some reason. Suggestions welcome. Bear this in mind when purchasing and choosing a chip.
