  1. Thanks! The Highland headlamp isn't available on the tooling, so it won't be on the model. But.. Lees locos is able to fit working ones for £30 a loco, so if anyone wants those fitting to their model just get in touch with him after purchase and arrange it with him.

The other option is to scratch build one, or maybe we could get some non working ones 3D printed if demand is high enough, as these could be used on many other locos. But that'll have to want for now unless demand is overwhelming.

Thanks Alex, I suspected the tooling would be an issue, I think my friend has already ordered one anyway!

  2. From what I understand Ian there is a proposal for a 3rd set which will be a spare/standby set, not sure its a done deal yet but stand to be corrected.

Lots of speculation at present elsewhere about a further loco hauled train or two being added in the Northern area (Manchester-Southport and S&C as some possible options being touted) in order to release some DMUs.

    Time will tell no doubt!

  3. Dug out one photo which is 37669 in red strip railfreight, has sealed bean headlight but obviously a refurbished one and not a "0". Photo dates October 87. Will have a run through others tomorrow and see if there's any others. 37008 seems to spring to mind.

Well the search much to my suprise didn't bring up other railfreight 37s at Queen Street, sorry. Perplexed because I'm sure there was one. Pretty likely that one did appear in the early period....

  4. 37196, yes and no

The livery is ideal, but all the photos I have looked at for 1989 don't include a sealed beam headlight

Several other Red Stripe Railfreight Class 37 locos did visit, but each presents its own problem (in N gauge)

I have a photo of 37160 on 08 Feb 1988, in very clean condition including Eastfield dog

However, it has a cut away buffer beam

The only other I can find is 37514, but I already have that covered as a 37/5

  5. FInishing off my list of Class 37 livery variations and actual locos that visited Glasgow Queen Street  (1987 to 1992)

    Large Logo Blue (6 x 37/4)

    Department Grey / Yellow (37043)

    Triple Grey Metal (37423)

    Triple Grey Petrol (37707)

    Triple Grey Distribution (TBC)

Triple Grey Construction (N/A as 37425 in Large Logo Blue)

    I have a 37/0 central headcode leftover

I was hoping to cover 37374 in Red Stripe Railfreight, but I can't find any suitable photos

Were there any other such suitable 37 in this livery to visit Glasgow Queen Street?

Are there any other liveries I have overlooked? (excluding BR Blue)

Does 37196 in red stripe railfreight fit the bill? July 89 it did the 1803 Inverness, it actually brought the stock in but then banked the 26 which dropped on the front. We went Cowlairs south-west, deposited the 26 and 196 then worked to Inverness via Cowlairs West-North. Don't think I have a photo but will have a look over the weekend. Sure I have photo of another red stripe RF 37 on some ECS in that period in addition.

  6. I'm another that has a great interest in this railway/area which I'm lucky enough to visit at least once a month on average. Assume you have the Scarborough (I think) Historical booklet on the mines & railway? There was also a section of the Beck Isle Musuem in Pickering that had (& may still have) a display of photos and archive information that brought up a few items I'd not seen before.

There's also a local historical group that meet in the communal building out on the lane towards Hill Cottages (Rosedale East terminus) that may well be of interest if you need any more background.

Look forward to seeing this progress!

  7. Thanks for the replies.

I also have another 'unidentified' Scottish 37s in my collection and it has plated over doors. Taken at Motherwell on 11.9.1982.

My notebook shows the following 37s on shed.  156,242,058,056,149,139,117,292,133,188,145,154 and 146. Obviously some of those are centre headcode.

Anyone got an idea which one it is?

Only 56 & 58 of those you noted were splitbox versions, and 58 had plated doors at least at one end so that would be a good bet.

108 was also my first reaction; it has the old connecting door plated over (say compared with 37022 you've shown) and oval buffers, and at the time was a WHL regular. Pretty sure that 108 in August 84 would have been unique with plated door, headlight in that location and oval buffers.

Some great nostalgic photos there of the Oban station as I recall it with the old station still standing but out of use. Had two weeks based near Taynuilt in August '84. Happy days.

  9.

And here is a shot of 'the team' alongside the remains of 37 403(I think, it may be 411?) outside 'the alex' in Derby on Saturday night

I'm off to bed early now, as I'm getting up at the crack of dawn again for 37 688! Kev.

Kev, it's 411 at the Alex. Spent many a happy evening in there 20+ years ago! 403 is currently being prepared for "another coming" on the mainline thanks to lots of hard graft by the SRPS diesel boys at Bo'ness. Should be coming back complete with through steam heat pipe to work with 025.....

  10. Porterbrook ending up owning 'Gordon' by default as I recall ; they financed works to the loco but sadly the then owning group were unable to repay the debt; and as a result 16 went into Porterbrook's ownership. It was then bought by an individual, who sold it to HNRC after several years before Beaver Sports/Martin Walker got it at the 3rd attempt!

  11. During the 80s, the 1018 (SO) Scarborough - Newcastle during the summer holidays. Nearly always a Class 37.

I remember also getting 37191 'International Youth Year 1985' resplendent in Large Logo livery from Scarborough to York on a Sca - Glasgow Queen St service.

The other Class 37 on the Deltic Silver Jubilee was 37001.

Think I'd agree with that as my favourite 'English' regular train, especially when the loco and stock came empty from Botanic Gardens and a visit on Friday evening sometimes led to able to select which of the 37s stabled or expected would work the train. 37003 when service was extended to GQSt was very enjoyable.

In Scotland always loved the Far North, first one out of Inverness and last one back in particular.

  12. I'm pretty certain it's him. Wasn't sure if you knew him. He would have been a secondman at tinsley when the picture was taken. Saw him last year at Leeds when I was working tour de France special's and he was working for East coast

Indeed it is Russ, last saw him on 55022 a couple of years ago, he now works out of Neville Hill. Think I've a similar photo to this, IIRC 104(?) when it did a S&C pilot job, Russ features on my photo too!

  13. Another very satisfied first time customer here: items ordered Saturday arriving this morning, both product and delivery well priced and well packaged - looking forward to having a play later!!!

10/10 and will definitely use again....just as well for my bank balance I no longer work in Lincoln!

  14. An interesting insight! I travelled on the sleeper on a number of occasions in 1992 into 1993; and quite a few non IC livered 37s featured, which would concur with the lack of availablity on the livered locos noted above.

    01.08.92 251 & 252 Aberdeen portion North

    14.11.92 194 & 175 Inverness portion North

    15.11.92 194 & 059 Inverness portion South

    17.11.92 059 & 194 Aberdeen portion North & South

    5.12.92 251 & 194 Inverness portion North

    16.1.93 043 & 214 Inverness portion North

    5.2.93 152 & 175 Inverness portion North & South

    19.2.93 133 & 214 Inverness portion North & South

    12.3.93 133 7 221 Inverness portion North & South

I'm sure we made best use of some sort of offer that was on! I lost interest by summer of 93, I don't think I've done the Inverness or Aberdeen sleeper since, although have done the FW beds a few times for an occasional walking weekend in the Highlands.

  15. Hi Peter, very sorry to hear of your health issues and hope it's more good news on Monday. It'd be a huge shame if you 'hang up your boots' so to speak, there are plenty of us on here and that have seen your wonderful models at exhibitions that would very saddened if that's what you choose to do. Shame I live several hours away from you or I'd be more than happy to pop in - if I'm over in your part of the world any time soon I'll send you a pm.

    best wishes,

    Dave

  16. Gary

Glad to say I finally got to see Glenuig 'in the flesh' so to speak on Saturday - and it more than lived upto expectations.

Speaks volumes that I never got chance to say hello with the volume of people at the layout.

One of those layouts that both inspire me to improve my own skills and also take me back to the many days spent in the highlands in the 1980s.

Hope you enjoyed it and looking forward to seeing the layout again in the not too distant future.

    Cheers

  17. 37003 was my favourite; had some fantastic runs, Scarbough - Newcastle extended to Glasgow in 1986 being one of several occasions when it had worked off Botanic Gardens (ECS went Hull-Scarboro in 86 for that train). Last trip before withdrawl was Aberdeen-Montrose in 88 which was also very memorable. Shame it's power unit gave up the ghost, think it has 73's now installed.

37011 probably ended up being my fave Scottish based loco, again in 86 quite a few runs when 37/4s had some issues that meant a short term return to steam heat locos. The most memorable day was the £5 go anywhere day in October 86 when we spent the day on the old girl doing QSt-Aberdeen-Edinburgh and then Edinburgh-Aberdeen & return vice HST! Quite some day, even the Fort Bill sleepers had a relief that day - 37004 was heading down the tunnels as we were powering up, much to our suprise. Shame 11 came to a premature end.

37240 was probably the loco in the early 90s, seemed to turn up just about every day when I was North of the border for the usual fortnight freedom in the summer. Highlight working was the internal overnight Inverness-QSt as far as Perth, might have helped we'd been supping Orkney Skullsplitter in Aberdeen earlier in the evening!

  18. Napier Chronicles confirms 15 was the first production to visit Liverpool on 19 June 1979, see http://www.napier-chronicles.co.uk/15_19-6-79.htm.

After this time visits became more common, Napier Chronicles will almost certaintly have these all listed! I suspect all the class bar St Paddy & Nimbus made it to Lime St.

GPKC is correct that 4 failed at Lime Street on what turned out to be it's last working on 28 October 1981. It was going to be taken back to York dead in tow by 55011 later in the day, but the driver refused to take it, meaning it stayed overnight at Liverpool.

  19. Ian,

Can't say I've ever heard about about 12 going to Liverpool that early, everything I've read suggests (IIRC) 1979 - without looking it up have a feeling it was Meld or Tulyar credited with being the first. That's not to say it didn't happen.....

Once the class had been displaced from toplink duties they did start to make apperances on Trans-Pennine turns. You're correct that in the last few months that York used turns to Liverpool in order to ensure everything ok ahead of working a charter. Indeed No 2 suffered problems on such a turn ahead of working the outward leg of the Deltic Scotsman Farewell and as a result was replaced with Tulyar.

  20. Strange goings on at Rannoch - seems that a Class 318 EMU managed to make it all the way to Rannoch today without electricity :O

    Andy 8)

Looks like 55022 took a wrong turn somewhere in Glasgow with this EMU drag....."22" must be hidden by the station building though! :scratchhead:
