Oxford Diecast/Golden Valley - YE Janus 0-6-0DE

Oddly enough the Janus seems to be one of the better industrial survivors. Considering how long it is since any were built and the ready availability of ex-BR shunters cheaply there seem to be a remarkable number still running.

Perhaps it isn't quite as "specialist" as might be thought- and it can work a siding on any layout set in the late fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties, noughties or this current decade. That gives a loco with a span approaching sixty years.

Les

Cheers Les, the Janus was undoubtedly a success but Taurus less so, only trialled for a bit on BR and the broken up by the mid sixties although another one one made for Spain bizzarely... And 2 Idus's which apparantly had hydraulic transmissions. I think they would be a good model but perhaps just a little too specialist i fear after doing a quick google https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkshire_Engine_Company_Taurus_and_Indus Edited by jessy1692

Didnt they say that about Heljans dinosaur diesel collection ? You just never know these days, admitedly it is a very specialist loco with a limited market but if the Janus sells well i wouldnt be surprised. I will no doubt take the plunge one day soon into etched kits and im sure a Taurus will be on my list.

Who is "they"?

We're not talking about a mainline loco which could be seen at a number of locations, which was famed as a prototype for a hugely popular design, and for which there is much photographic evidence.

In contrast, the Yorkshire Engine Company "Taurus" design was a one-off. It was on trial with BR (not owned by them), and wore a single plain green livery its entire life. A 4mm RTR Taurus is not financially viable for any manufacturer, and it's a sure thing that it'll only ever be available in kit form.

All this talk about Taurus, made me dig out a box I've had for a few years.

This little bull needs a paint job that I probably cannot do to give it justice, so I've been in dilemma about keeping it or selling it.

(Don't know of anyone who does paint jobs).

So it's been sitting on the shelf, but it's nice indeed I got to see the real thing in Madrid last year.

Solid little thing, buffer beam is 1.5mm thick brass.

I'd love a Taurus. I saw it at Cambridge on a freight, from the school physics lab. My mate was in a different classroom and missed it. However his bedroom overlooked the diesel depot. He got up a day or two later, looked out of the window, and saw a centre cab diesel through the (frosted?) glass panes of the shed. On the way to school he called in and asked if he could see Taurus.

.....He was very deflated when the helpful Foreman, somewhat puzzled as to what he was on about, took him into the shed to see 2x 03 shunters back to back....

The NCB Janus and NCB 3 pack wagons must have been delayed in production by CNY, as Golden Valley had advertised them as a January release in the model press adverts in February magazines. That was the first firm date I'd seen. Hopefully be here in Feb

Another hit for the wallet.

Hopefully the NCB wagons (and accompanying Janus) will arrive in time for No Place's second outing in June.  They won't be here in time for Sileby in 3 weeks time.  People will have to admire Pecketts, J94s and some brass gems instead.

Does anyone know if there are coal loads available o to fit Oxford wagons?

I don't think much to those wagon liveries. I suspect that the British Steel one is entirely fictitious and the others are suspect, except for maybe the PLA one, athough I am willing to be proved wrong on all counts.

The NCB one would be more useful if it was black, or dark grey but brown? I don't think I've ever seen NCB wagons in brown. Shades of red in Scotland and the North East of England but never brown.

The BP one looks convincing as a PO wagon but if it is real I don't think you'd have found them coupled to a Janus as they look like something from the pre-pooling and nationalisation era.

These liveries look like they belong in a train with a Prime Pork van. #Must try harder

On my computer the NCB wagons look as if they could be a dull red rather than brown, so I think I'll wait and see them 'in the flesh' before making any judgement. For comparison here is a photo of a NCB internal user wagon at Niddrie Landsale Yard, Edinburgh in 1971.

The NCB livery looks similar to that used on the Wemyss system and the BSC one appears to have been inspired by BSC Workington! see attached link!

Looks close enough to me.

Not that's it's much help but in the NCB North Eastern Area the red colour was officially known as Indian Red. I saw this wagon being delivered from overhaul freshly painted with a rake of it's brethren in 1976. It was shining like the proverbial Sh*thouse door. I still have a couple of the wagon delivery labels. The paint was an exact match for Holts Dupli-Colour red Oxide primer. I compared it. Yes I was barmy back then too.

I agree not much wrong with the NCB colour; I have plenty that are similar.

The BSC is Scunthorpe, so more likely inspired by http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/scunthorpebsccorus/e6e133e1a

Although the colours look slightly over saturated (particularly the reds & yellows) on my monitor and colour temperature of objects is notoriously difficult to judge, David Ford posted this image up on his Flickr site recently.

https://flic.kr/p/QBLT9S

Taking your monitor calibration into account you could look up the various shades of British Standard Colour comparators that are now available on Line.

eg.

That looks nice, we do a kit for the Spanish version as well in HO 1:87

It was very similar but wider to suit 5'6" gauge.

The Spanish loco incorporated some parts from the UK one but is reported to have had its transmission replaced by the type found in the Indus 0-8-0. If I ever get to Madrid I'll have a look underneath.

It's a bit difficult to get underneath, the museum is the old station, rail connected but no where close to a pit.

I dont think much moves around within the platforms, the lighting isnt the best either.

(I recently acquired an NBL 0-4-0 kit, painted and finished from your range too).

Looks vacuum braked to me, with no signs of air brakes... kind of limited it's usefulness i'd have thought ?
