Bartb
I have wanted a garden Railway for years, but never had the time to do it. Now that I am retired, I decided it's now or never. Problem is I haven't got the room for the track to go around my small back garden, so the only option was a end to end layout. This was just an idea in my head, till Dapol decided to start modeling O gauge. So I took the plunge and ordered a O gauge Terrier and a wagon. I also ordered some peco O gauge track. So now where could I put my layout ? Along the fence seemed a good idea, so I purchased some wood and started construction. So this is the start of my garden Railway.
Bartb
While sitting in the garden I realized I could add an extension to part of my board. so after purchasing another plank of wood, I set to work. I then covered it all in Roofing felt, and added a edge in case of derailments. Next job was the track plan.
Bartb
A few more points, and I had a track plan. I now had somewhere to use my train, so out come my old H & M controller and we had movement at last.
Bartb
started installing point motors and and working on the plug and play controls. so far everything working alright. Also got some more wagons.
Bartb
A friend said "it's a pity you can't go through the shed" , and this got me thinking. I re organized the shed and bought a Ply wood board. cut a hole into the shed and then cut a hole on the side of the shed. I had to have a slight incline as the other side had to miss the window. so after a bit of work I had an extension to my garden railway. I added extra power feed and we were up and running.
Bartb
So while the weather was good the work continued. until I came to the tree. There was not enough room to go behind the tree, so some pruning was the order of the day. Been meaning to get rid of it anyway, so now I had free passage for the railway.

RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted February 13, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 13, 2016 Great stuff! My first garden layout didn't have a garden, it was along a brick wall in a terraced house back yard - German outline, it was the Brikkenkliffen Bahn! Things have moved on....took me another 25 years though.
Bartb
Just need some better weather so i can get out and do some more. I have managed a few hours through the winter, but need some warm weather to sit and catch up on the wiring side. One good thing my stock has grown, and have a few things on order for later in the year.

Bartb
I could not help myself today found a BR black Early crest on E bay, so I have ordered it. I wanted one when they came out but missed it, so now I will have 2 trains to run when we get some better weather. Once I have another loco I can work out the wiring better. Bartb
The next problem was the corner of the garden, a bit over run and in need of some TLC. I needed a short bit of fence so I adapted a pallet to fit the gap. A coat of stain, and fixed it in place. All this was done in between rainy days, so took a while. The more I get done in the winter months, the more time I will have in the spring to enjoy my railway.
Bartb
So after Putting the pallet fence up in the corner and a slight trim, I got on with the track boards. I managed to miss the roots of the tree, and put a post in and another board. I laid some more track including a point. Wired it all up and tried running a train up and down. All was working well. All this was done in between rainy days, which is so frustrating when you just want to get on.
Bartb
I have managed to put another board in, tho I had to trim the bush a bit. I also laid a bit more track, and tested it. I now need some nice warm weather to get out and tidy things up the garden a bit before going any further.
Bartb
While I have been waiting for the weather to improve I decided to start on my first building, so I used some odd bits of wood to construct a small goods shed. I am keeping it simple, but will add detail as I go.
RMweb Premium mezzoman253 Posted March 1, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 1, 2016 O Gauge is expensive, those slabs look hard. I'd hate for your lovely Terrier to go sky diving. It's only a matter of time before you inadvertently knock it off, or those wagons. How do I know that? I'd put up a higher lip to the board edge if only whilst operating. Or put something soft down on the slabs. Liking it so far. Rob
Bartb
Hi Mezzoman I will be adding a higher edge along all the layout, just got to find something suitable. I did start putting a edge up but I now see it is to small. Thanks for the advice anyway.
RMweb Premium mezzoman253 Posted March 2, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) Hi, Some transparent thinnish plastic would do the job and you can see through it. It only needs to be just over half the height of your tallest stock to stop them tipping. Good luck with the layout, Rob Edited March 2, 2016 by mezzoman253
Bartb
Thanks for the advice, I will be going to my local DIY shop to have a look for something suitable soon. Did a bit more to the goods shed, think i need a small window to the left.
RMweb Premium mezzoman253 Posted March 3, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 3, 2016 Hi, Maybe another one the same size as the one on the left and fairly close to it? You could even get 2 more in, 3 altogether. Rob
Bartb
Just decided on the one small window.
Bartb
Managed to get out in the garden today, and wire up the last 2 Point motor switches. Also wired up one dead section switch. Had a short running session to make sure all the points were working, and pleased to say they are. Also added a plastic strip along the edge, cheap and flexible just what I wanted. Had to cut out a section for the goods shed, as it was to tight on the back line. Just need some more nails to fix it in properly. Next Job is to tidy up the wiring so it doesn't hang down so much. Roll on the better weather. Edited March 10, 2016 by Bartb
Bartb
Managed to get out for a few hours today, and had a running session. Had a few minor hick cups, but manage to sort them out. Need to get the edging done before I run the trains properly, as I don't want any accidents. If the weather is O K over the weekend I will get some of it done. My new Western region brake van arrived today so gave a run in, worked well.
Bartb
Been working on the Edging today, still have a few bits to go over and one last strip at the end. Think the height of the edging is just right, and tho it's plastic quiet strong. As with all things time will tell. I had to drill a small hole for the tacks, to stop the plastic splitting.
