I love mock-up module point plans seeing how the point fit on the module before nailling them inplace and knowing how many I need, luckly I have enough points to compete the first approach module coming from the car port end and with changes to the module plan as well  made it possible,, going to be pretty awesome to see the trains going through the points and cross overs and other passenger trains waiting to get  clearance to depart the platform , I may have signals on the end of the platforms as well.

The video clip and  first pic of my latest loco  Austrain's DL class National Rail ,a loco I miss out in buying when she first came out a hard loco to buy now when I saw it listed on the net I grabbed it arrived yesterday , a loco I can tick of the wish list, now I have all three ,locos in the video clip plus the latest NR 18 from Austrain's with the newest Indian Pacific colour scheme, I am not sure if they will paint anymore NR's with that colour scheme. I will have to find a pic of the loco and post on the next post.

Pics 2a and 2aa, in pic 2aa where the end of the level is where the cross over be and points accessing those five platform tracks, I think I will have to wire in a short block so I can isolate those tracks free of the main line to shunt locos, the other piece of ply is where platforms one to four track will join the main line, that will be in stage three build, early next year.

In pic one the points and cross over at the front will be a challenge to wire as well,, with a platform track and passing loop plus a siding for the locos so the can shunt around the train.

I am not sure if I will motorise all the points and the double slip as the control panel will be behind the module, if so be an expensive module indeed with the diamond crossing in the front to be replaces with a single slip cross over, would like to have those leavers you can buy to switch the points.

I swapped the points around  in pic two on the last post, now I can shunt the locos around the Indian Pacific without interfering with the main line .

Have mentioned before that I be modelling a few stations on the same modules, stage one of the station module complex I have only got three modules, all up there are six plus the three smaller extension modules for the suburban platforms, I be modelling East Perth terminal. first. The last two pics are East Perth terminal Western Australia where the Indian Pacific ends her 3 day journey, be quite a few laps of the layout be a fast clock indeed can have fun in just running one train for the whole day, I would love to run a track around the whole house, need to win the lotto..

Those two last pics is what I hope to achieve  and  become Sydney Central  later, the second by passing loop become platform 15 track as in the third pic with the double decker electric set, luckily the suburban island platform is in the place as the first Sydney Central suburban platform, be much better with friends over where they can run other trains, I be wiring up my control panel for DC using 4way rotary switches to control four throttles, after I test run the first loco on the front of the layout will start building the control panel all up 15 blocks for stage one, one day plan to switch to DCC.

Just finished my circular saw cross cutting jig today, very happy with the out come, square cut every time, hopefully last quie a while, I may have to glue thin strips of aluminium over the screw  holes scratched the base plate of the saw, was a challenge because with the saw being a 18volt battery saw the motor was lower so I had to cut down to 7mm to clear the motor.

I used 1.5 mm thick aluminium angle line strong enough for my battery circular saw, saw cut is only 45mm  didn't want to lose too much cut , jig is designed to cut 42mm square pine posts, come in handy to when I start working on my double deck cable stay bridge, modelled on the Oresund bride between Denmark and Sweden, towers 7feet high

I plan to screw in place so it can be taken off an extended  plate so to I can make a clamp for when I be cutting a lot of pieces the same size, be challenge as well to cut timber on different angles come later, my other hobby is woodturning come in handy cutting strips of timber to turn segmented bowls, platters and pens.

Itching to get stuck into cutting four pieces of ply for the hinges on the module legs, heading to my hobby shop tomorrow to buy a single slip cross over , blood test first will complete the first approach module car port end, will be the most expensive module of the whole layout, haven't decided if I will motorised the points as the control panel is just in front of the module, like to get those manual lever type  to switch points.

Warm week coming  up will make the most of it, and finish all three approach modules painted and track down, busy week.

What a find, I was looking at another you tube video and saw on the side links an Indian Pacific, wow saw the second loco is my loco DL41, I like to find out that diesel  and steam  locos are still in use today, the only difference is the colour scheme blue and yellow and different company  Pacific National, I am thinking of buying decals with the Pacific Nation logo and covering the National Rail .

The day I wan to test out the circular saw cross cutting jig it is raining, only be cutting four pieces of ply for the hinges to screw better onto the module leg posts and extend the table top past the saw blade making it safer to cut mall strips of ply, also bought a multi drill sharpener Ozito  brand be sharpening all my drills up to 12mm well.

No moremock ups for point module plan, the first approach module car port end has  being painted and the points and one cross over is peramenantly  nailled down, the first point past the cross over I didn't have the right hand point , going to the hobby shop Thursday to but the right hand point and two others competing the module.

One other change is I will be shifting the cross over to the first point and plan is when the train is coming off the right hand track onto the main line will cross over back onto the left hand track in pic two where the car is, but I will have to switch the curved points around on the first curve, The question is when I switch the points will the points cut the point beyond the point right hand track, will I need a switch, this saves having to buy a single slip cross over they are quite dear to buy, planning either a three way or four way signal there be a lot of fun.

I still need to build a mini panel for the bus plugs once the track and points are down be over a week away, spending as many days I can , but wiring taking the longest, I am  not sure witch way I go is I motorist the points or use leavers as the main control panel be in front of the module, full steam ahead.

Points and down except two, a trip to the local hobby shop Friday, to buy the two points get some more track as well,, still need to  mark the to drill the holes for the switching pin, have to wait till Thursday to buy some more 0.9mm led for the led  pencil the only size that will fit the point bar.

Got no more straight point left only curved points some are left over from other layouts, may never use them handy to keep for a branch line I have am planning.

Will have to lift out the points and double slip cross over to drill the holes put them back and then start nailing down the track, next job build the mini bus plug panel and start the bus wiring, in the end well worth the effort,, have to make a start on the main control panel as well another big job can do a lot at night in the hobby room, soldering the wires to the rotary switches and LED indicator lights for each throttle.

The modules after this one be easier with some only track, the second approach module will have two points and a diamond cross over  on the northern end the first large curve will have two curved points .

My word Tony, you have been busy!

Thats going to be some amazing point work when its done. Certainly complex as well. I tended to stay clear of complex pointwork but then my line was never under cover!

I've just watched that video you linked to. How long was that train?????  :O I hope you are going to put the correct number of carriages behind DL41, not forgetting the car transporter on the back!  :locomotive:

So I take it that in Oz you can take your car with you on the train? What a bloody brilliant idea!

I'm guessing it won't be long before the first engine will be appearing. Really looking forward to it now.

Hivjoneslong, many thanks, those points are to access five platforms and where the small cross over and doulble slip is the is three tracks there, will depend on how I strat the journey the tracks or the right of the pic be a temperary platform one to four where I can bring in the Indian Pacific and split the train, shuntin gthe carriagers to platform two and three.

Indian Pacific consist now has about 30 carriagers with one auto carrier leaving Sydney , my mum and sister last year  did the jourmey, sister said they had on that train 28 I will have enough cars to make up the full train, some of the carriagers wont have scirts  till I manage to buy more, two locos needed to get over the Blue moutains, when the trainreaches Adelaide they put on an extra auto carrier, only have  Lima carrier not correct though and is too light to put infront of the train, will scrach build brass ones.

Yes you can buy ready to run  auto carriers but there are too exspensive I think about $130 each out of my reach a friend  scratch built his own will take pics of his wagon, that module is a very expensive module indeed, I am not sure if I will motorise the points being so close to the control panel thinking of using those point leavers to switch the points, will have signals to show which way the points are set, I scratch build my own signals save  some money, bought a couple of years back heaps of different coloured LEDS

A busy week coming up  once the module is finished be able to set up all five front modules to run the first test loco, video clip of the beg event, full swing to completing the rest of the layout to run the first train around the whole layout can't wait. aiming Christmas time.

Hi Tony.

Sounds good to me. Have you considered the wire in tube method? That might be one way to control the point work. Could always use piano wire as well. Might this be of use? http://www.modelsignals.com/sm_parts_frame.htm I'm considering something similar for my line (eventually).

30 cars! Blimey! I think the longest passengers trains in this country are about 15. That is alot for a model wagon. Surely the old lima one could be bashed to an appropriate look?

Sounds like you have it all planned out. I'm looking forward to seeing it running.

Hi Mathew, thanks , ywah thinking of paino wire in a tube so many ideas out there using SPST slide switches is a cheap way and you can wire singnals to the switch as well, not in a hurry but have seen some good leavers but very expensive.

That is one hell of a long train30 cars plus two locos, will depend on passenger booking the length of the train most Indian Pacific consists are about 26 cars, the first Ghan train in 2004 was nearly double that, yes Lima do bring out an Indian Pacific carriage three different ones, sleeper diner and power car, I have 18 all up taken me a few years to collect, the latest ones out have the wedge tale eagle loco on the sides of the cars, I will get some more down the track at $70 a car take a while.

Fifteen cars are pretty long depending on the size of the coaches, those Intercity coaches are quite long, would like some of them, I have a Bachmann Virgin DMU cross country set, want the Doctor Who set and the Electric set , the front loco design are very close to our QR EMU sets. On the wish list is the Euro Star train the latest one 320 class I think, that is a very long train 18 cars and the cars have two sets of bogies must be joined with a draw bar set up, I also have the Thaly's full TGV set plus three extra cars to make up 15 car train usually only 10 car sets in the US on the East Coast there is an Amtrak Auto train has 16 double deck passenger cars plus 23 Auto carriers wow some train, I have a smaller 10 car Amtrak set .

Yes I have been planning this layout for some time and building slowly, my dream layout , comes down to budget, and the only way to do it is take my time, yeah hope to get a loco running end of July and Christmas time for the main event., once I get past this module the others be a breeze except for the spiral take a while build all the track decking is done.

I swapped the diamond cross over around today, looking good and linked the three way point with the point on the middle track, getting there, hopefully the specialist isn't running to later tomorrow afternoon get time to drop into the hobby shop and buy those two needed points, going to be pure awesome to see the passenger trains going through the points, I don't want to complete the station modules, want to make sure I have enough track to complete the main circuit , got one full box of flexi track and track left over from the old layout.

Hi Tony. Yes I have heard about the use of SPST switches. Yes the leaver frames are expensive, but I guess your paying for the engineering required.

Sounds like you have quite a collection of trains from different countries. Its funny but I don't think I've ever seen a model of Australian locos over here. Have you got a big manufacturer?

Changing subject slightly you mentioned you liked Spitfires. Have you ever seen these videos?

Its the sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin that gets me, but the Spitfire is probably the best looking and best plane this country ever built. British aviation at its best.

Afternoon Mathew, pure awesome have to agree as well I also love the sound of the Merlin engine, yes Britain sure had some good aircraft during WW11 another favourite  aircraft is the  De Havilland Mosquito and Mustang the Merlin engine made the Mustang., many thanks for the video clips, there is more footage on the same link.

Went to an air show Amberley RAAF base it was  great to see the Mustang in flight with the sound of the Merlin engine   pure awesome that was a few years back very noisy indeed and a long day out., Kitty Hawk as well .in RAAF marking of that era, see if I can find some pics of the air show.

I don't think we have any Spits flying in Australian one crashed at an air show in South Australia years back.

Yes we do have quite a few, but sadly the trains are made in China, but still charge the earth, locos around $350 mark coaches are   $90  getting out of my reach , even the Peco points I bought today had gone up a fair bit $26 for a small point and $32 for the express point, don't like buying second hand points, come home with the wrong small point back to the hobby shop tomorrow to get the right one

trains

Yeah I like to collect trains from other countries, would like an Irish passenger  train the  colour scheme is orange .and  more US locos and container double deck well wagons, trailers on spine cars .got 25 of the spine cars 15 well wagons 23 60foot flat wagons with containers. longer the better..

Gee doesn't time fly nearly midnight here.

Hi Tony.

Midnight? Its only ten past three here!

Yes the Mosquito is another fantastic aircraft. We did have one flying over here, but it crashed in the mid 90s. Mustangs are great aircraft. Lots of those kicking around!

Cor! Most of ours are made China too, and prices are quietly climbing. Guess its the way of the world. I know lots of people trawl ebay for secondhand stock, but even that can end in overpriced madness.

Late evening Mathew, 10.49 pm your time amazing 7.49am  my time , it must be an awesome site indeed to see the Battle Of Britain memorial  flight fly over with the Lancaster in the middle.

Yeah you can get some good buys on eBay I won't buy locos anymore being caught a few times, problem not knowing enough to fix them myself, I can put them together, one of the projects is re-motoring  Athearn's AC/4400 locos and Dash/9's, got two running one more to go.

Postage is the killer and exchange rate as well  costing nearly double the price, if you are after something that is rare you will buy it like the Hornby 00 scale dual Tender Flying Scot 4472.I bought a couple of years back, there is also online shops that sell trains like where I bought the DL41 loco  from was worried till I got it and  test run it work very well, actually looking at buying the cradle wheel sets where you stick them on the track long enough for the loco and don't need a test track.

Off to the hobby shop after brekkie to get the right point holding me up in marking the centre hole for the point switch pin a few to drill, nail them back down and nail the track down plus set up the last station module so I can solder in the brass plated circuit board strips on the track module join and cut the track, no way will be on my knees doing it , made a cradle to sit on the saw horses  making them higher making it easier working on a module.

How do you do the bus wiring on your garden railway, I have seen some just solder short pieces of wire to the track on joins .

Before starting on the bus wiring will have  build the bus plug panel first pics to follow, layout is designed to be plug and play same with the signal and point motor bus wiring is soldered into a 25way computer plug they are cheap to buy now.and blow you away when I start working on the control panel be lit up like a Christmas tree

Tony from down under 8.17am my time

All the 14 points are pemameantly nailled dwon with holes drilled for the switching pin, not sure if I will motorise the points being so close to the main control panel, looking at leavers with SPST slide switches to switch signal's

Didn't do much today was going to redesign the mini bus wire panel, forgot there isn't enough height for the new panel back to the other design with some improvements, has to be long enough for three double speaker plugs and a 25way computer plug, all up 6 double plugs, 12 blocks, tomorrow I will cut the timber for the new panel. hopefully slide better than the first one.

Once I get past this module the rest be easier to build and set up being smaller in width 6inches, all the decking has being cut out now even the curved decking has being done, just a matter of joining up levelling up painting and nailing track, spiral will take a while to build, at the other end is a 12foot  radius curved ramp, decking cut as well, most of the work being on the first three station modules and approach modules both ends.

Getting closer and close to the big day, first test loco run earlier end of July on the front modules, will have to make a start on the control panel, not sure how I will build it with a track plan, with using rotary switches just have each switch marked , each position be lit up with a LED indicator, at least I can do the wiring in the  hobby room.

Hi Tony.

I know what you mean about ebay, I have been caught several times. Some stuff seems to go for silly money sometimes, so these days I hang back. There seems to be alot less available compared to what there used to be. Never mind, I should be saving my money anyway!

No wiring on my garden railway - they are all remote control live steam (gas fired) or battery electric. On my old OO we used to jump the fishplates/joints with tiny cable. I also kept it simple DC (no DCC) with isolating sections and electrofrog points. The switches were mounted on hardboard with a track diagram, and tucked well under the line so to be out of the weather. I also used to coat the back with grease to keep the moisture away. Sidings/loops were wired such that the switch would change the polarity of the two closest rails to suit whichever path was wanted. I've drawn a crude diagram to illustrate.

Lovely photo's Tony. Loving the pointwork, and the mammoth loco! 3-way point and a double slip. Although I never used a double slip on a layout we did have one and I used to play with it all the time as a kid.

Morning Mathew, yeah I do the same to now depends what it is, last item was a set of 5unit container well wagons the postage was the killer from the US, I need to buy a fold up foot stool, I have trouble climbing up into the Maxi Taxi's wheel chair hoist, last one broke can only get them on eBay height wise.

Oh yeah you are lucky then not needing to do any bus wiring real pain, good idea have heard that just soldering in jumper wires onto the rail joins.

I

The way I wire my bus wiring  the plus is the front rail -minus the back wire the way my train club do their wiring, something to do with DCC, one day I will switch to DCC stuck with DC, do away with the control panel..

The pics are only going to get better, here is a pic of the mini bus wiring sliding panel slides up in under the module out the way, I like to think ahead when building the layout, need to build a second panel for that module four thee blocks for stage three two passing loops and single track love single track running.

Set up the last station module this afternoon bolting both together ready to nail the track across the module join solder in brass platted circuit board then cut the track, next jog the bus wiring, after  that I think I will have to start on the control panel so I hen be able to in the first loco o the front modules exciting.

Being redesigning the track plan, the cable stay bridge has gone  going to design my own double deck bridge looking at a arch for the main span, be 12 inches in height still need the spiral but now be at the northern end of the pergola out in the open.

Very cold here today westerly winds, 18 degrees but it felt like it was 8 degrees, I couldn't go for my afternoon walk.

Hi Mathew, yeah that is te trouble with DC all that wiring just to run more than one train, DCC only needing two wires into the layout., one day, have just as much fun with DC.

THat is nonthing yet, I still have to wire up 4way three pole rotary switches to contol the three to four throttles, much more fun with more than two friends, my club has single tract main line running and passing loops can take up to 40 minutes to run around the layout when it is busy, great can chat to other members while wait to go.

Here is a couple of pics on home I nail down track on the module join making it heaps easier no sore back once the tack is soldered in place  I cut the track on the join, actually I nail the tracks down on both modules before I pull them a part.

Track gang be out in full swing tomorrow, being very windy here the wind was so strong yesterday blew down a mobile  tower in the next suburb, not as bad today. they quite big at the base, plan to get a couple for the layout.

Finely all the front 5 modules are connected with track could run a test loco, haven't done any bus wiring on the last station module,, next job is cut strips of the brass plated circuit board, boght a new pair of tin snips they have  changed shape and very cheap to buy , I needto have in place one of the curved  sections northern end and the second 6th module car port end so there is enough length for the loco so I switch to the next track..

Monday I will solder the brass strips inplace cut the track so I can pull the modules apart and begian to start soldering the feeder wires to the bus wires, got that job down to a fine art now, running out of wire, also have to sort out the isolator  track joiners on the wrong side of the points.

I decided last night to test two coaches through the points to the front of the pic last two points after the diamond cross over aren't as bad as it looks in the pic the coaches went through with ease with out a lot of over swing what I worried about , tested the double slip and three way point gee they are a challenge to work out will have to search for a Peco diagram for the cross over.

The full train will fly  through them can't wait , a while to go yet end of July for the first test loco.

I have redesigned the back of the layout, spiral has being changed to the northern end now and in a better spot, scrapped the Oresund double deck cable stay bridge was going to cost me too much to build have designed my own double deck bridge, modelled on the Sydney Harbour bridge will have a concrete stile  arch instead with a 11foot main span in two sections done that so I can use what Ply I have at home, all the curved decked has being cut , after the approach read be easy.

Going to my train club today is their DCC running day, they have Wi-Fi set up so I can use the Engine driver throttle app on my phone , my TGV has DCC on board and a Bachman DD40AX loco as well  only two trains slowing putting DCC decoders in my locos, I would like to put sound in my TGV  both locos are powered the cost of two locos.

Thanks Mathew,, I have swapped the points around wasn't happy with the way I had the points to the front of the pic so have done away with them and the diamond cross over, saved on four points can now go to the second approach module car port end where the terminus track meets the main line this way I will have use of of the terminus track straight away instead of having to wait to buy them.

Today I will be soldering those  brass ciccuit board stripswhere the module track join is and and getting the second module out the way, that module hasn't got any bus wiring as well going to be busy  week or so .

Last night we had a big magor windows 10 update, pretty big, one big improvement is it is quicker to getonto the forum posts , pics are different and even affected this forum the way you load pics on, have to go through the browser now and then attach the files, I am runnin gout of HD space so will have to sort out my pic folders andput them onto an USB stick to free up space till I update the the HD with a bigger one.

On the last station module car port end is where the main control panel be, I am thinking of using those terminal strips, in the future be adding another set of three station modules competting the station module complex will need longer wires.from the layout to the control panel when I shift in front of the new station modules.

Tony from cold down under had zero degrees this morning to a nice 24 degree day will be making themost of it.

The module track joins have been soldered in place, had a couple of issues where when I was counter sunking the brass plated strips the drill bit when right through an effort to replace the strip, next time I willl set up the portable bench drill the  best way, next module track join.

I use a Dremmel to cut the track on the module joins now the module has been pullled away, I tried again to bolt the modules together and the track linned up perfectly, the bolds have to be spot on, did stuff up saying that where the modules didn't line up before the track was nailled down, with the DremmelI made the hole longer and packed the hole with 2mm thick styene glued it with super glue and fixed.

This may be the long way around but in the end worth it to see a train run around the whole layout with out derailling, going to need a lot of track have already put my bid in for mum to put towards a box of flexie track, to complete stage one of the station  module complex.

The last station module that was bolted up to the first approach module need to have bus wiring as well, all the front modules has a bus wire mini plug panel .

Next job the bus wiring in full swing Friday, having a break today have redraw the main track plan and make a start in planning the control panel be lit up like a christmas tree all the 4 prosition rotary switches have different coloured LED's, would like to use plastic styene for the panel fase and tossing if I have a track plan diagram on the panel.

Tony from cold down under hit minus this morning -.4 degrees, Jack Frost has paid us a visit and burnt half of he grass mainly close to the back yard path way.
