With the new Stadler EMUs on order the Ge4/4ii's from the 1973 batch are to start being retired

According to one of the guys who's a driver "Current official policy is that 611-620 will not receive further upgrades and will be phased out when the new train sets are here and running. 621-633 remain part of the fleet."

Stadler EMU initial concept

Given the introduction of the Allegras I wondered how long it would be before the started removing the mkII's. But the concept is more pleasing to the eye than the Allegras

Oh I dunno I quite like the aggressive look of the Allegra compared to the smooth concept here. Mind you the Allegra changed quite a bit from initial drawing ;)

After a week there recently, I'd say approx. 50% of the trains on the Albula are Allegras.  I certainly enjoyed the ride down the Albula on one of them where the driver kindly kept the blinds open, but I have to say, my camera spent more time in it's bag than on previous trips.  I also wonder how long the Ge 6/6 IIs will survive.

12 months ago it was all Ge4/4iii (with the occasional stand in), times they are a changing.

Are the new fixed coach sets in use too yet?

Yes, again about 50% of the trains are made up of the fixed sets.....they are nice and very comfortable but a soulless.  All the new driving coaches seemed to be in Landquart for commissioning.....As you say, the times are a changing.

If you're fed up with the new stuff, there will be twice-daily Crocodile trips with vintage coaching stock, between Davos-Filisur from May-Oct 2018, see:

Historische Kompositionen täglich im Einsatz

Nostalgiker, Bahnfans und Feriengäste kommen auf ihren Genuss: Zwischen Davos und Filisur verkehren vom 10. Mai bis 28. Oktober 2018 je Richtung täglich zwei historische Züge fahrplanmässig. Die Kompositionen werden von der der Kult-Lokomotive Krokodil gezogen.

and also mentioned here:

Sorry, can't find an English source.

It was also announced that work had started on doubling the line between Samedan and Bever to improve the flow and punctuality of trains on the Albula and Engadin.  I guess a lot of the spoil from the new Albula tunnel will find itself being used there

I noticed the trackplans on these maps are right up to date when you zoom right in and even include the new Albula tunnel running parallel but not yet connected.

The Capricorn unit.

Personally it looks a bit urrggh compared to the dynamic Allegra front. Doesn’t make me ‘want’ a model ;)

If you visit the Swiss Map site you can zoom in closer. Really useful for the photographic view.
