Red Devil
Sometimes you can have enough of building girder rail...... A hastily mocked up shot of part of the idea... Phase 2 baseboard now in build this is a hinged part to this one which will create a box for transit, but feature ‘the bit behind the railway’ more buildings and another simple tram line on an incline, going to try a little bit of forced perspective by doing this in 3.5mm including the tram line (thank god for 3D prints!) Backscene on this will form the top part of the transit box, corner bits for this area being done in curved ally sheet for strength and durability, that and I hate corners in the sky! Hopefully a fair bit of progress to be made over Christmas break... 8

Red Devil
First bit of girder rail gets a coat of plaster........... This is Knauf Easy plaster, first jobs were to put 1.5mm pieces of ply between sleeper, this gives a level base for the FCS magnetic strip, then edge with 3.2x4mm Evergreen strip which gives a touch of camber to the road. Next up lots of scribing as this bit is being sett paved So far quite pleased with it.
Red Devil
Now for the tedious bit.......... Overall I'm pretty happy with how the scribed 'girder rail' looks, been worth the effort so far I think. 9 1
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted January 1, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 1, 2018 You've got more fortitude than I have, I'd be hanging from the rafters if I had to do that lot! Well done, it looks very realistic. Don't forget the areas of tarmacadam infill where Sheffield Works Department couldn't be arsed to replace the cobbles after works! Mike. Yeah, they'll be added afterwards, along with grids, manholes etc. I'm not doing it all setts as there was plenty of tarmac too, so a bit of both for interest, also some road repairs too hopefully. Red Devil
So far little mention has been made to the railway bit......anyway that's likely to change as the tram track build nears if not the end but a pause.... The general idea is that it's part of the beginning of the station throat of Victoria, allowing a fair bit of shuttling about, SG may not ultimately end up a cameo layout as my projects have a habit of growing, if it does then it gives me further options, if not it was the only way I could see to get this into the build! So some recently acquired 'toys' pose on the arches......some work started on these but obviously a whole lot more to do...hope it sorta sets the scene a bit....... The motorised road vehicle fleet also continues to grow with several more trucks and buses well under way inc this pair, a Roe bodied PD2 and all Crossley DD42
Red Devil
A very short video of the first powered movement on Grimeside...... Or in reality checking the FCS magnetic strip depth is ok! The 'Faller' vehicles are in reality anything but, they utilise a Faller motor mount but that's about it, wheels and axles are compatible but cheaper copies, the motors are 12v rated Nigel Lawton midi motors, these coupled with 3v batteries give a better speed, trials with r/c and 9v batteries for speed and stop control in hand too. Meanwhile a start has been made on the railway section track, this is a whole lot quicker than the girder rail stuff!
Red Devil
Some more basic structures have started to appear...... I really need to get my finger out, several exhibition invites and all I've got is a load of ply and plaster!!
Red Devil
Bank Street Terrace (built 1902) begins to take shape..... Also decided to go with laser cut kerbs, which should be fun!
Red Devil
Basic construction work on Bank Street terrace is nearly done, one of the things I wanted to try was a vaulted ginnel with a view to a cameo of 'Bert loitering having a crafty smoke' It may also give a few photo opportunities.... Anyway this sorta gives the idea. a couple with vehicles These were just done with my mobile so hopefully someone with a better idea of how to use a camera than me might be able to do something interesting!
westerner
Reminds me a bit of looking through the alleys on Salmon Pastures as the tram went up to the cinema.
Red Devil
Stuff has still been happening but very slowly due to work commitments but I've not really completed much, however one thing that is well under way is choice of mechs and operating system for the tram part. I'm giving serious consideration to battery/radio control, as such I wanted a smaller lower profile drive and found the locos n stuff universal drive, one kit purchased and nearly built and I couldn't resist a quick trial, here it is just lashed up to a 3.7v lipo battery. So far so good.....

Sorry to disagree, but from my mis-spent youth in Fir Vale, a gennel was an open pathway between houses and gardens, of which I used to have a few to negotiate between home and school, and what you've got there is a passageway, or passy, as it has a roof and forms part of the house. Depending on where you actually lived in Sheffield there are probably other versions available, but S4 pitches it close to your mythical area. Mike. To me it's a ginnel pronounced with a hard g.....heard plenty of different vernacular terms over the years but it'll always be a ginnel to me no matter if I'm living in West Yorkshire and modelling South Yorkshire! You can take..........
Red Devil
Stuff still happening but very slowly, I'll update properly in the future but there's been a few changes to the overall idea since first posts.... This is a new bit, might explain why progress is slow a bit!
Pompom
I've been admiring the beautiful models of Sheffield trams and am about to paint an Anbrico Roberts car picked up at a show many years ago and finally built as something to do during lockdown. I was wondering which paints you use especially for the cream and blue. Any help would be appreciated.
RMweb Premium Derek 19B Posted June 14, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 14, 2021 Hi Pom-pom Nothing to do with these guys except following in admiration. The paint I have to paint my AEC regal is from Phoenix Precision, C270 for the Sheffield blue and C269 for the Sheffield corporation cream. Any red for the red stripe. keep safe Derek 19b
Pompom
Hi Derek Thanks for the information. The tram coming along quite well, but the glazing looks as is it will be a challenge, especially the rounded front windows. Thanks again, Tony
