Class 31s in BR Green on Western Region

Recommended Posts

Did any Class 31's make it in green livery on the Western Region after they were transferred from the Eastern Region? Or had they all been repainted before then?

Quite a lot of green 31's in the 58XX numbers were transferred to the Western not long after they had been re-engined. I'll see what I can dig out and put a few on here.

A photo in Peter Robinson's "The 30s and 31s - Rail Portfolio 15" (Ian Allan, 1991, isbn 0711019673), shows 5843 dragging a DMU along the seafront at Teignmouth on 31/08/72 in green with full yellow ends, BR arrows, and white body bands.

John Vaughan's "Class 31 - Diesel Retrospective" (Ian Allan, 2009, isbn 9780711032859), has a photo of 5668 on an up passenger working at Charlbury in June 73 in the same livery. The caption notes that 5668 "was one of the few WR '31s' still in green livery".

I think I've also seen a photo/photos of 31s around the turntable at Old Oak Common in a similar livery, but no idea which book or magazine at the moment.

Yes there were several, for a maximum of about 2 years from early 1972 into Spring 1974.

D5823 was one, allocated to Bath Road in April 1972.

Some like 5826 had BR arrows of indecision rather than later green totem...

Phil

Yes Phil, quite a lot seemed to get BR arrows at the same time as GFYE.

A few of the first batch of locos that I have photos of in my collection - although many not taken by me so uncertain copyright - are,

EDITED to add later members of the class....

D5518, D5520; then D5523, D5610, D5617, D5624, D5630, D5643, D5694, which had small arrows; D5557 and D5561 which had 4 arrows one under each cab window;  D5600, D5618, D5623, D5647, D5663, D5668, D5685, D5692, D5693, D5801, D5803, D5810, D5812, D5813, D5814, D5817, D5818, D5819, D5822, D5823, D5824 D5826, D5827, D5828, D5829, D5843,

I can't remember any GSYP examples with BR symbols, but there may well be some.
