EDIT Phil noticed that the 2nd part of the Plym had gone walkabout and he has put it back roughly where it should be.

I had to jiggle the points a bit to avoid the operating linkages hitting the stiffeners, but nothing drastic. As you can see I have started putting the sleepers down in preparation for the track laying.

I won't be posting much whilst I crack on and get it done.

Thanks for looking in.

Hi All

A bit of an update, the track work is mostly done, but I have run out of rail, some more ordered from SMP/Scaleway. Here are a few photos to keep you going.

Phil found 4 lengths of rail, which he passed over to me this morning, I can now finish off the yard part of the track laying and start the ballasting. whilst without rail I have fitted the servo's and built a sevo4 board to operate them. Wagons now glide through the point work, I only had a small issue with the one to the dry, all the others were OK. Once this is done, I will need to get a loco up and running to make sure all is good.

Now back to the solvent abuse and get the last few chairs down.

Morning All

Some more photos of progress, these show the Servo4 boards and the baseboards with the servos and the uncoupling electro-magnets fitted.

Well it's starting to come together now, all the yard area track is laid and I have started to add droppers. All the sleepers are laid for the branch and I am just awaiting the delivery of some more rail so that I can finish all the track laying.

A start has been made on the wiring.

The bits of template without track are for the stop blocks.

That's it for now as I am away for the weekend dishing out mice pies on the ESR.

OK, I have made a start on the ballasting.

post-19485-0-96935200-1512639894_thumb.jpg

I have started with the cess using kiln dried sand, as used for grouting block paving, fixed with floor coating by HG, I got mine in Lawsons in Plymouth, but should be available from ant decent hardware store.

I have to take the layout down now and put it in the shed as we have guests who will be using the spare bedroom, I don't think they would be to happy being put in the shed.

Looks more impressive than I imagined.  Would the real thing have been so particular about trackwork; I always thought it would have been more basic but I don't suppose there is a lot of evidence.  Unless you go by the remains!

Hi Brian

Thanks. The trackwork probably would have been a bit tatty, but as it's an exhibition layout, it needs to run properly. Hopefully i can make it look a bit tatty one it's all done and working

Hi

Another update, I have taken delivery of the rail from SMP and so all the trackwork is now laid.

The next job I think is to get it all wired and working.

I am also considering lowering the layout a little so that the Mrs can see over the branch line into the sidings.

Well the wiring is complete and I jury rigged a H & M controller up and a loco has successfully run on all tracks and all the servos worked, I have sent the photo to Phil for sorting, but unfortunately he is away until after Christmas, so I can't post it.

Merry Christmas all and thanks for following. Thank you Phil for sorting the photos for me, have a good Christmas.

I hope that you have all had a good Christmas and are looking forward to some modelling in the new year.

Phil has sorted the photo of the 517 and a wagon on the layout.

Another update, I have built and fitted the control panel and after having to replace two servo motors everything now works consistently.

post-19485-0-02006900-1515146544_thumb.jpg

Yesterday Phil and I had a field trip out to the site, to refresh my memory and get one or two rough dimensions. Phil also managed to get some photos of the wheel side of the mill, so we now have a rough idea of what that looks like. I think I may have to make a few compromises with the dri, but until I can draw it out I'm not sure. Phil has suggested decking out the area where the carts were loaded so that rail borne wagons can be loaded.

There will now be an intermission whilst I ponder the way forward.

Thanks for your interest so far.

Steve

Hi All

It's been awhile, but other jobs are pretty much out of the way for the time being, so a chance to put the layout up and do a bit. I have now have my head Slartibartfast on and have started the terra-forming, easy on the fiords. Here are a few photo's to show the progress.

<<<<<<<<<<<< had always assumed that you'd have the higher level line at the back, rather than the front of the layout.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Me too!  What is envisaged for the main branch, working or demo line?  Or?????

Nice to see something being built properly and with decently-laid track.

It's interesting, I had always assumed that you'd have the higher level line at the back, rather than the front of the layout.

Thanks CK.

The reason that "The Branch" is at the front and higher than the clay dry track is that the dry is built into the hill and is on two levels this puts the apex of the roof at a guestimate around 40 to 50 feet above ground level. This 6 inches plus and the hill continues even higher. Phil thought it would improve the operational interest to include the branch, so this was lowered too enable the viewer to look over it into the scene, the reason that it crosses over at the fiddleyard end is so that one person can operate it. It's envisaged that an auto train on a shuttle will operate a service, hence Phil's continued swearing on club nights as he's building the Diag Q and R auto coaches that ran on the line.

Steve.

PS. Phil says "who wants to be conventional, anyway"

EDIT for the PS.
