I had thought of that as the first stain I got was some sort of acrylic that defied thinning and was designed to be wiped on. However, I managed to find a spirit based stain that thinned nicely and the first batch have been drying since yesterday afternoon and the 2nd lot are in the dip and will come out later today. I’d be interested to see how yours looks. D I used an alcohol based stain. Common rail in place. BG rail added. You can see Jonathan’s gauges very clearly as they are made from orange acrylic. Here’s a close up... Standard (or narrow if you prefer) rail going in. drduncan Posted February 1, 2018 Author Share Posted February 1, 2018 (edited) Tonight’s job was to make a start on the paintwork. It’s complex (but not as horrific as the diamond crossing) and I think the key will be in the sequence of assembly. I’ll need to build two linked common crossings and a k crossing. First things first the common crossing v’s. I made one leg over long with the intention of filing it back when soldered together. I tack assembled the v upside down over the template to make sure any cleaning up would be hidden. Then having moved the v to one side and using more blue tack to keep everything in place I added more solder to fair in the filed rails and give me something to file back to a smooth point. Then it was a few strokes of the file to remove the excess rail and solder and there was a vee. Next job to link them together as one unit - maybe tomorrow.... drduncan Posted February 21, 2018 Author Share Posted February 21, 2018 I wasn’t happy with the alignment of the k crossing, so this evening I rebuilt it on a spare template: This time everything aligned over the actual template so then it was chair treading time as well as fitting the curved stock rail. The mixed gauge on the loop has been laid and a track point added to protect the running line. I had wanted to build the trap into the loop to quay point but all the mixed gauge knitting meant there wasn’t space. More importantly, it scupperec Gareth’s long planned visit during which I was expecting him - I mean us - to make significent progress on Nampara’s track and getting it down on the first baseboard. So instead I was staggering around the house and Gareth just came down for the day rather than the four planned. Even one day left me exhausted and that was without any modelling done, just gossiping and drinking tea (which as Gareth is a Yankee who normally abides in Buston Massachusetts, meant considerable patriotic sacrifice on his part...) I’m now on the mend, and I’ve managed to make some progress in the last few days. First, I’ve started constructing the Broad Gauge stock box (capable of holding 5 x 20 inch cassettes or a combination of these and 20 inch loco cassettes. Second, the bases for the BG cassettes have been cut out and I now need to cut the aluminium angle to length. Third, a SG stock box has been started too. Fourth, I laid out the track templates to start marking out the position of the uncoupling electro magnets. The ply and the etched brass part built station building have been added to get a feel for the space available. But it has left me wondering if I should shorten the loop on the 2nd baseboard. Finally, I have also started constructing the supports for the proscenium arch which will also carry the integral lighting rig. The ones for the other board are drying and I hope to fit them hem tomorrow. An L girder if plywood will be fitted along the back of the layout to brace/join the end panel and the upright. I think it's a matter of which way up you hold the phone – it remembers, and if you're holding it up side down when you take the photo it will up load that photo the same way.
