That's a first sighting for me and might possibly be the first time it's been modelled in a loco cab. A touch of detailing genius and really fine modelling. Thanks Chris. Thank you I saw this whilst trawling the interweb and it got me thinking (dangerous) other silly details include the billycan 10 8

Popular Post MrWolf
Guilty as charged I'm afraid. The article was in one of the old model railway magazines I was given when I was still at junior school. I'd always fancied making one, but looking at the limitations of the old Tri-ang Jinty, I decided to experiment with one of the Chinese made Hornby Jinty models, especially as I got one from a junk shop priced £9. My intention was to build a "modern" take on the conversion with added details. Having confided in Chris about the project I think that it soon became a joke that as soon as mine steamed into Aston, someone would release a kit or a 3d body at least. I'll let Chris tell the tale, but we ended up doing the research together and soon realised that although I could convert the Jinty chassis and create the trailing bogie it was apparent that despite needing quite a bit of work to convert, the dimensions of the Jinty were very much a compromise, around 18" too short across the buffers and the roof alterations didn't get rid of the worst parts of the cab. Plus the only rivet detail was on the buffer beams, nothing anywhere else. So I went with the body that Chris worked up from the general arrangement drawing and the few surviving photos and we've been bouncing emails back and forth over the details for months now. Mine's still under construction as I wasn't sure we would even find a flat with room for trains, but it will be happening very soon! Frankly, I think that Chris is underselling the model. Considering the combined development costs have been about £40 and there's something complete (and running!) in such a short time, I reckon that a standing ovation is required. I'm working on eight wheel pickups amongst other things. Below is the trailing bogie I made as a test piece whilst we were trying different wheels. I'll let Chris take up the story from here on. RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted May 21, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 21, 2022 (edited) Both Rob and myself tried to gather as much info as possible but it proved difficult. All we could find between us was two photos, a basic general arrangement drawing and the article from a 70’s model railway mag So as you can imagine there has been quite a bit of guess work and modellers license used Edited May 21, 2022 by chuffinghell 17
BroadLeaves
Well, that is absolutely blooming marvellous. I've just put a hat on, specifically so that I can raise it to the both of you. An excellent combination of team work, engineering expertise, design skill and perseverance have come together to produce something unique and really quite special. The best compliment I think I can give you is that if that had been posted in one of the manufacturer fora, with a title of "New Highly Detailed Locomotive Released", I would have thought that it was a professionally produced model, and I'd now be furiously searching the internet to go and buy one. You should be extremely proud of what you've achieved. Now then, so far my search has turned up nothing, so when can I buy one? 😀 10

Brilliant stuff, Chris, truly, and nicely done @MrWolf Can we talk about the painting and finish now please? Cos it's gorgeous! Gopher
Brilliant - very very impressive. Well done Chris and Rob. Great to see in this day of ready to run and plant modelling some innovation and creative modelling. Well beyond my pay grade, and abilities. 2
RMweb Gold 88C Posted May 22, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 22, 2022 Well done Chris, along with Rob you have created something that very few modellers, if any, will have. Who says all Great Western engines look the same! We are often told that you must work from a dated photo to get an accurate model but, as I know, if there aren’t many you have to do your best and you certainly have. RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted May 22, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 22, 2022 Chris, Rob. This is utterly superb. A true testament to your collective creative talents and skill. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 22, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 22, 2022 An excellent piece of work, Chris & Rob. I have a soft spot for 0-4-4s with 5 of my own with 2 more to build! The printed body looks every bit as good if not better than the CDC Designs bodies that are on the net.
RMweb Gold Popular Post chuffinghell Posted May 22, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 22, 2022 How it started I bought a Bachmann 57xx with a damaged body from EBay with the intention of modifying the chassis and adding a bogie Instead I disassembled it and wondered if I could make a chassis from scratch and 3D print it Once I found it would work I went about designing a chassis 8
MrWolf
Chris really pushed the boat out with the body print drawing, getting as much of the original rivet detail as was decipherable from the old photos. It was whilst he was sending me copies of the initial drawings and CAD models that I realised that there was no way hacking a Jinty body about was going to pass muster forty years down the line and he very kindly printed one which will fit the modified proprietary chassis.
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted May 22, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 22, 2022 (edited) Once the principal was proven I refined the design, modified the drawings and reprinted it in black resin For some reason I kept the 8pin DCC socket cut down pickups from the donor loco glued into place (only as a way to keep them in place whist assembly) Securely held in place once assembled Nut inserted for the bogie pivot bar inserted to act at as a stop the wheels from the 57xx were too small so these were replaced with a set from a Collett goods purchased as spares Edited May 22, 2022 by chuffinghell 18
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted May 22, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 22, 2022 It occurred to me afterwards that I didn’t need the DCC socket and hardwiring would take up less space and give room for a stay alive unit not as neat but it worked 11

RMweb Gold Popular Post chuffinghell Posted May 22, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 22, 2022 Once happy(ish) with the chassis the next step was the footplate and running board Again this was drawn in Solidworks and 3D printed. The running board in black resin and the bufferbeams in grey I designed the bufferbeam to take vacuum pipes from a Hornby Tornado and sprung tapered buffers from a Hornby King class both were available as spare parts With the buffers stripped and glued in place the vacuum pipes were added and the whole thing given a blast of red paint After hand painting the vacuum hose black the buffers were reassembled More??? 15
