Why on earth has the original got a uPVC window stuck in it?

Less draughty and double glazed make it warmer.  It's not actually uPVC, but does look something like it was bought from B&Q. Who knows why, something to give more light when used as a store an maybe?W

….just needs weathering now but nothing too heavy

REALLY need to get mine built! There's been a lot of tinkering involved in fitting the Hornby chassis, but it's getting there.

Great to see the thread active again Chris, after your top secret project reveal. Somehow, I managed to miss the reveal and have spent the last few days blurting out things like Incredible, amazing, and lots of wow’s while catching up on the last 8 or so pages. Before I forget, put me down for a Toadie as well if you end up going down the production route.

Still working on the toad tadpole

Instead of doing the chassis in three parts I’ve looked at doing it in one piece….

…..it appears to have worked quite well, earlier attempts to do the same with a solid floor failed

I'm sure I’ll get there in the end, there’s a lot of trial and error going on behind the scenes

I want to get it right, particularly if others want one, I don’t want to appear in the ‘shoddy goods’ section

That's look very good Chris.

Don't worry about shoddy goods, don't make the same mistake other manufacturers did, just make your tag line "lowering standards" and people won't be able to complain! 🤪

Lowering Standards... Conjured up the image of a Boy Racer Brittania with the wheels from a 9F and a big Sub Woofer in the tender.

Oh dear I'd better go...

That gives me an idea for a GWR hotrod toad 👍

That's not where you're wrong.   Tadpoles were express fish wagons.   Notable diagram was S2 or S3, which did have a guard's section in the center of an open.   Looks somewhat akin to an American 'transfer' caboose.

The saga continues….

originally I was going to use a brake standard I had in my ‘odds n ends’ box

However, as a few have shown interest in potentially wanting one themselves I’ve had to come up with an alternative

3d printed column and a handle made using a handrail knob and brass wire

….which I thought looked terrible but after a coat of primer….

okay so it’s not perfect but it’s better than nowt

Stop - repeat stop - putting your efforts down.

I for one am in awe of the ingenuity and talent on display here - and I suspect I am not the only one.  Keep it up.

Let's face it, if it was c*$p, someone on here would point it out.

Very nicely done Chris, your toad design looks fab. Certainly could sneak one at least into my collection 😉

I’m looking at two versions, one with a dovetail for NEM pockets* and another for Romford 3 link couplings

*a Bachmann cranked coupling works out at the correct height

After much trial and error I’ve finally managed to print a chassis that I’m happy with (ie not bits missing or broken off)

So much so I’ve added blackened brass rod and bits salvage from the damaged Oxford rail toad I win on eBay for less than a fiver, luckily it was only the body that was damaged so I have been able to salvage all the brake gear after stripping off the paint the previous owner had applied….

….giving it a coat of primer has highlighted all the ‘scars’ left from removing the print supports…

….obviously not seen when right side up but maybe enough to put off potential buyers

unfortunately I’m unable to print the brake gear in such detail but I have a plan to at least print the brake shoes (if it works)

ModelU figures come with the supports still attached and I don't think that puts anybody off given how well they appear to be doing. Most buyers would expect to do some cleaning up.

Almost close to assembly, should probably leave it till tomorrow to at least allow the paint to harden

I’ve purposely designed it so that items of a different colour can be painted separately, saves masking up and potentially making a mess (even the roof chimney is a separate item)

Cant do much more after assembly as I need to order some transfers and attempt the dreaded handrails but I’m hoping to have it rolling before the weekend

They grey is a bit dark but matt varnish will lighten it up once I’ve put transfers on etc

Oowh, white painted veranda ceiling, possibly almost cream. How lovely. I should stop there, otherwise this post could become quite long. Suffice to say, that is a lovely toad Chris. Count me in for one should you do a production run. I'll need to be able to fit DG couplings to the chassis, just saying. No, sorry, just dreaming of particularly fine stock. Well done that man 👍

Looking forward to seeing developments over the weekend.

Best,

Bill
