This weekend we are pleased to be attending the 2022 London Festival of Railway Modelling at Alexandra Palace.

If you are attending the show please visit our stand, number 76, and say hello. We have 3D prints of the forthcoming new decks for our BBA project which will include the BWA conversions with six cradles fitted, two examples can be seen in this excellent photo of 37048 passing Melton Ross on the 10th of September 1991.

For those interested in the forthcoming Cavalex cradle fitted BBA wagon here is some information on them ( Although these were not coded BWA as far as i'm aware , BWA was for the same wagons converted in 1995 with five ex BZA cradles )

BBA wagon pool 4225 Various to various stainless slab / coil .

Total 33

910003 , 006 , 112 , 170 , 179 , 216 , 223 , 234 , 235 , 258 , 264 , 269 , 275 , 292 , 307 , 413 , 420 , 421 , 422 , 423 , 424 , 425 , 426 , 427 , 440 , 441 , 447 , 450 , 461 , 465 , 469 , 484 , 489 .

These 33 wagons were fitted with 6 traverse cradles for carrying stainless slab cast from Tinsley Park steelworks to the East coast ports like Grimsby for an onward sea journey to Germany for rolling , only to be brought back on the same wagons now as coil to Tinsley and Panteg , slab also ran from Tinsley to Lackenby and Port Talbot to be rolled into coil , but as these plants dealt with normal steel , the process of rolling stainless was not best suited to these two plants , hence a switch to European plants . These wagons ran with BDA , BMA with slab and SPA , BAA , BDW  etc with imported coil either as semi finished coil to Tinsley and Panteg or as wrapped finished steel to the likes of Wolverhampton , Brierley Hill etc..

Liveries of these were black with railfreight logo and red cradles or original bauxite brown with brown cradles ,

Anyone else's BBA's squeaking?

Lovely model, bought a rake of about 10, but the squeaky wheels are driving me nuts.

Perhaps a light dab of grease on the axle bearing might resolve?    🙂

cheers

Al

I may have missed it but I can’t see anything on the PHA/JGA hopper wagon.  Is there any news on this model at all?

Thanks.

Good morning KAR 120C, the factory are currently preparing the first decorated samples of the PHA/JGA for review. We hope to have these next month.

We will of course provide updates as soon as we have more information.

I am the lucky winner of a set of 6 KMS EWS limited editions. 3 x BBAs and 3 x BLAs.  I am chuffed to bits (excuse the pun).

I unpacked them this afternoon and realised (again) how exquisite these are.  They’ll go with my Bachmann BZAs and Accurascale JSAs.

You’ve got to be in it to win it

Just wondering if anyone knows of and stockists that still have the Railfreight BBA’s available? I’ve searched quite a bit and can’t see any but wondering if I’ve missed anything.

Alternatively, when did Bauxite ones last until in traffic? There seems to be a decent amount of those still available, my need will be 1986/7 period.

unless of course there’s any rumours of a batch 3 - just all R/F ones, you know you need to.

Hi All (& especially SHerr),

If you are looking for Cavalex BBA Trains4U appear to have these in bauxite & weathered brown liveries.
Collets, KMS and RoS are showing the BLA in Railfreight livery if that helps.

Aside from that, try John Dutfield in Chelmsford as their web presence is quite minimal so a phone call would be best.

Failing that keep your eyes out on EBay.

Good luck.

I believe that the Railfreight versions are now rather scarce. They sold out in double quick time on both previous batches.

We are looking to do further batches though so watch this space.

Brilliant news, thanks. I will hang on rather than go for Bauxite on that basis as that’s what I’m really after.

I've plenty of recent photos of BBAs and many don't look like they've been near a paintshop since the day they were manufactured in the late 1970s. Some have a DB sticker stuck on the side. But few have original ends or original floor girder arrangement.

https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/bba  They are a mess!

Yes they did, I think some BBA's were converted to BLA's around 1994 so there were mixed rakes around that time, found a video on YouTube of 60034 hauling a mixed rake.

You can still get the mix today. Whilst the long distance flows tend to be slab or coil, the South Wales trips between Margam and Llanwern can have a variety of steel products (and wagon types) on one train, so BBAs with slab and BLAs with coil could run together, or a mix of one type loaded and the other empty.

Sure. Along with BAAs, BDAs, BNAs, KIBs...

Rarer is. The 'Tubeliner' (Lackenby - Corby and back) was the odd one out as far as I can tell being all one steel-carrying wagon type. Possibly IWBs (the big Cargowagon wagons and the cargowagon flats) being the exception to the varied wagon type rule too (in the context of steel conveyance by block trains). I do not know everything about everything.
