Class 25 photos

Recommended Posts

There were 5 like this, the first of class 25/2: 25 083 - 25 087.

Also, trademark of Glasgow works: larger numbers on the bodyside.

The arrows of indecision are slightly wonky, too - do that on a model at your peril!

Re bodies: the arrangement with revised grilles came in with 25/2, the last 30 of which (25 218- 25 247) had 25/1 style bodies and boilers, but all of 25/3 were of the revised design.

I recall seeing these described as early and late in the past (May 1977 RM!) but ....

The first 25(!) had the later class 24 body, with horns below the bufferbeam. Surely this is the early design of bodyside?

In practice, the only need to distinguish between body side variations is within 25/2, where there are 3 variations:

25/2 (revised) with boiler and hence tanks;

25/2 (revised)

25/2 (25/1 body)

These were everywhere when I was growing up, and I took them for granted. I also only had a Kodak 110 Instamatic camera and could barely afford the film and processing, so I have very few photos and fewer that are worth copying. I will have to find them first - not sure where they are.

I recall commenting to a friend that “1978 would be a great year to photograph and model” (I was 13 at the time) but lacked the resources to do much about it. Partly because I had spent my money on an electric guitar.

In hindsight, yes, it was: the economy took a downturn during the “Winter of Discontent”, wagonload traffic was reducing rapidly and transferring to airbraked stock, and the move towards a reduction of smaller motive power was well underway.

In hindsight, I should have bought a basic 35mm SLR and a few rolls of film, with money put aside for processing... I would still be looking at the photos, whereas I haven’t played a guitar for over a quarter of a century!

The folly of youth, eh?

Like this post and your pics' a lot Regularity, good info' and your exploits with cameras and guitars mirrors my exploits to a tee. I've seen a negative scanner on flea bay that has cassettes to scan 110 and 120 negs' hopefully i can get one soon and then scan the earliest of my bad pics' most of which were taken back in the late '70's on an hand me down from my Gran' Kodak120 and then a cheapo' 'Kays' catalogue bought Keystone 110. Heres some more bad copies for now though! Not the best of pics' but a record and ok/useful for modelling and detail purposes to someone somewhere i hope. :)

An April 1982 Sunday Merrymaker trip from Atherton & Daisy Hill stations to Bristol or Bath was hauled for the last leg from Birmingham by 25 058 & 25084.

I've now exhausted all my 1980s photos and now move forward 30 years to the K&WVR Diesel Gala 2013.

25059 looks just the way I like to see a 25  - weathered, body-side number and snow ploughs. Only marred by the 'headlight'!

Bad pic' of 25 119 passing near Dean Ln. Newton Heath. 6th April 1983. Towing EMU 313 006, it may be of interest to someone.

Edited.  Correct date & EMU number found.

Used to see these trips occasionally when spotting during school lunch near the site of Middleton Junction. Only way at the time I was going to cop any of these and the other EMU that went to Horwich Works.

25078 shunting the up yard at Workington, in the background you can see Workington shed, this was dismantled brick by brick to be reused at the Great central railway.

078 again, stabled on the short road (old loading dock) at Workington station.

Great Photos Ray, thanks for posting them. Have you a date for these shots at Workington?

From a driver’s perspective, what were the 25s like, other than the well-known Achilles heel issue of the traction motors?

From an owner's perspective, cab floors (that's why most are having cabs off), triple pumps, wire insulation brake down, metal rot, lack of spares now and the ride can be lively at speed (I have been told lol)

And last but not leased the thought of the main gen going bang and a very big bill coming in

A couple of 'end of life' shots taken at Swindon Works in early Jan 83 on a school railway society trip to see the large numbers of locos stored there at that time.

Sadly the colours of the images have faded somewhat over time - both locos were very definitely in blue!  Unfortunately these are merely scans of my old prints - if I come across the negatives I will re-scan and try again.   I confess to having mixed feelings about posting such images, but they were as much a part of the locos' existence as an ex-works' shot, so I hope they may be of interest.

Best wishes,

Heres 25009 at St Rollox Works, late 70s in a typically mixed group of Scottish locos...

Interesting headcode boxes at this end....

Just noticed buffer height looks a bit low - in for repair following a rough shunt perhaps?

Ah look - was about to be outshopped October 1977 ,

So the photos was Summer 1977 - John Howles and I were on a Scotland bashing tour for a week, remember Boney M's "Ma Baker" being played on the radio, was in the charts that year.

'Like' doesn't seem appropriate for such pics, so in the absence of an 'appreciate' button I went for 'thanks' (for posting the pics) !

Cheers,

Phil.
