Although highly suspicious this is an April Fool's jape,

As a bit of a background to this Steve and I have been planning this package for RMweb/BRM readers for quite a while (you don't want to know how many hours have gone into it) and none of it could happen until the software upgrade that happened in February was carried out, this couldn't be done until other php and mysql versions were updated on the server so it turned into an exceptionally large job. Once all that was done I could then get to work on these new features and additional benefits for those are happy to support what we do commercially. Then there was all the work digitising the back issues which has got to be some 15,000+ pages (some tweaks I've just spotted still to do) alongside the development stuff. We could have pushed it through and launched a couple of weeks ago but I had a fortnight's leave to use up and I wanted to be here to make sure things work as they should do for everyone. I would have been happy to launch yesterday but Steve correctly prophecied that someone would think it was an April Fool if we did it on my first day back; so we parked it until today. And that's why I get p'd off; countless hours of work shot down by 30 seconds on the keyboard.

Interesting. The concept of investing further in a site in which I already invest a lot of time and effort in exchange for further benefits seems reasonable.  I might give it a go, if only to see if I'm blackballed ....!

How long before Gold is the only membership type available?

Sorry, but it had to be asked.

Never. Any forum needs a body of contributors and so no-one will be kicked off for not paying. Gold members receive extras as an encouragement to pay to be a part of it.

Although it may be very tempting some days there are no plans for anything like that at all. Everyone still has everything they had yesterday, it's just that we are looking at ways to offer more (I hope that chap I was talking to yesterday about a cracking day out calls me back soon). ;)

All in all it sounds an interesting proposition,

Access to all back issues + a semi digital subscription + classifieds for not a lot more than I currently pay for my digital edition.

It includes access to the DVD Content, the digital extras aren't displayed within that version of the mag but they will be available via the Gold Lounge on here.

I can't comment about what Pocketmags does on an ipad versus the Exact Editions version - as I don't have an ipad but the navigation on an Android tablet seems better than via Pocketmags.

The key question will be the ease of use when reading, Andy, can you advise what mobile software you will need to open the back issue library (and confirm if an internet connection is required to access them)

I have tried using Pocket Mags on my laptop and found the scrolling / zooming a pain compared with swiping left / right to turn pages etc.  So long as the new system is broadly similar it makes a lot of sense to me to pay the extra £2 a month and subscribe to the gold membership.   Though it would be a little annoying if you have to be continuously connected to the net in order to read (given it would limit the ability to read on a plane...)

So what limitations in terms of photo size, posting limits, searching capabilities, etc. etc. will there be placed on non Gold members please?

I've just been using it via the browser and AFAIK it would require a connection.

From my life experiences where you have a two tire system those on the the lower run do get treated differently. Fact of life.

It will result in an elite group and those of us mere mortals posting less and sharing less and RMweb not being the busiest forum in the UK railway modelling world.

Sorry Andy if you have put a lot of effort into this but I can only go on my own personal experiences.

Really? I've been on forums for the best part of 20 years and I've not seen this behaviour from paid members vs. non paid members. In fact, non-paid members tended to have nothing to lose and so acted with less decorum.

He used to work at my company as a loss prevention specialist. He dabbled in shares a lot and introduced me to AIM. He left when his missus got made redundant and they set up a jewellery making business. I'm not surprised you don't know him really unless you also where where I work?

I assumed that would be the case without a lot of software dev to create some sort of reader which has suitable rights management data to stop you opening offline files should you end your subscription.

Now to weigh up if that is a deal breaker or not...

Well you have been lucky.

I have had moderators say to me you are right but he does pay so you are in the wrong.

Ah man, that's naughty! I hope that is not the case here. For me, I am intending to join because I like to be thought of as a Golden Boy.
