Northern to Miss Pacer Withdrawl Deadline?

Recommended Posts

Report that Northern will not be able to meet deadline for withdrawl of Pacers.

https://www.railnews.co.uk/news/2019/07/15-pacers-now-set-to-stay.html

Will DaFT grant a derogation against the requirements which become law at the end of this year or are we looking forward to a lot of short-formed and cancelled trains. Many peak services on Northern are already loading over capacity.

I think it is almost certain that there will have to be derogations and not just on Northern.  It's been pretty clear for a while now that replacements for all the non-compliant stock were unlikely to be in place in time.  Derogations will probably be seen as less politically unacceptable than wholesale cancellations and short forms particularly after last years timetable fiasco.

Class 153s are not PRM compliant either, and they're staying in traffic but will have to be coupled to a compliant unit after December (eg 150, 155 etc).

The only bit of a Pacer which is non-compliant is the toilet, and nothing in the PRM regs says a train has to have a toilet - just that if it does it has to be compliant. You don't need a derogation, just a screwdriver ...

Are they fitted with the right sort of PIS?

The Pacers now have a terrible musty smell which is quite nauseating. But they have to be used until whenever they eventually get withdrawn. I believe Heaton is being made ready for the first ones to be withdrawn later next month.
