Thanks Fran, I was certain you’d picked up on it.

The "new" pair have been to Georgemas Jn (for Dounreay). Note the extra vents on the roof of the rear Mk2)

66305 and 66304 with 6M98.

I remember seeing this now...their first run I believe. More Flickr searching has shown that both sets of escort coaches have been to Georgemas Jn for Dounreay with KUAs.

Also I don’t think I’ve seen this sample trains compilation from Accurascale...tried searching high and low for it but it was RevolutioN who produced it! I’ve copied it below as it’s very useful, and answers Tom Scrut's question too with 4 workings shown using 68s or 88s and KUAs:

Also found this consist, with a 37/6, PFA, KUA, PFA and 37/0...now very modellable with Accurascale products!

DRS 37607 & 37218 at Dunkeld and Birnam

Good job I’ve got a fair amount of DRS stock to provide a mix of traction and formations...looking forward to these!

Jack.

So Accurascale when are you following up on these epic wagons with a brand new tooled DRS Mk2 Courier Coach Pack?

Your DRS Class 37's & KUA's will look awfully naked without them & unprotected from terrorists...just say'in :read:

Hahaha in all seriousness we do not currently have plans to do the escort coaches, but there is a nice home run for manufacturers who already make the appropriate Mark IIs to have a home run seller if the KUA popularity is anything to go by.

Cheers!

Yes you're right it is a home run for others to do but I won't hold my breathe, in all seriousness Bachmann or even Hornby should really consider this as part of their future new tooling but we'll wait & see.

I agree with Fran, it would make viable sense for a.n.other manufacturer (be it red or blue) to produce a pack, however the blue team have already done a pack as a Ltd. Ed. for MR, and if there wasn’t a bit in the contract saying they wouldn’t produce them in their main range, they’ll certainly hack off everyone who bought the originals if they duplicate!

On the red team front, I strongly suggest you pre-order yourself a couple of these:

https://www.Hornby.com/uk-en/drs-mk2f-brake-standard-open-9521-era-11.html

If they were to produce the escort coaches - and taking the only current RTR 00 MR versions as a best guess - this release is pretty much exactly the same as you’d get. Obvious differences between this model and the real 9506/9508:

- Blanked end doors. Requires new tooling...VERY unlikely

- Opening windows (coach-side). Again would require new tool...you’d probably get it printed over like their Network Rail stock...
- Small grilles on brake end windows. Would require new tooling or be printed.

So I’d say that if Hornby did do the coach, it would look almost identical to the above, with maybe a printed grille and different number. I’d suggest getting a pair and doing some modelling :O ...or if you don’t want to, just live with the incorrect numbers or get someone else to renumber...I doubt it’d even cost much for such a simple job.

Just my tuppence worth...my Bachmann MK2A pair (bought upon original release thankfully!) still awaits a run with these brutes!

I’m in the same position, I knew there was a good reason I bought the coaches all those years ago ! :laugh_mini2:

cheers,

It was just a lighthearted post to Accurascale and I'm not worried about what Bachmann did about 6 years ago, before I even came into the hobby, with the MR limited edition which are inaccurately tooled anyway plus rare as hens teeth and not interested in buying Hornby DRS coaches and hacking them to death to resemble 9419 & 9428.

I'll just happily wait for someone to do them properly thus we'll see what comes along in the future or if at all but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it or debate the merits of doing some modeling.

I have the Hornby mk2F brakes on order. They will be near enough for me.

Also means I can chuck one of them into my rake of 5 ScotRail mk2fs and then the other one can run with 2 DRS opens and 2 37s in a formation similar to what has been in Anglia and Cumbria although neither are the region of interest for me! But given the nature of DRS's passenger work it is regionless in a hypothetical manner.

DRS have 2 pairs of Mk2 escort coaches - the original pair of Mk2 or 2As and the newer pair of Mk2Fs. So if Hornby produce 2Fs then it isn’t so far fetched that they could produce one pair of the escort coaches.

That could also get around any exclusivity on Bachmann's part if the previous release was the 2As? They make 2Fs too and would be modelling a different thing to the last ones.

I note that the length of these is 325 mm over buffers, but what is the length between the pivot points on the bogies?  I'm just wondering how the overhang on these wagons compares to say a Mark 3 coach (which is 210 mm between the bogie pivots).

Each wagon has 6 pivots - each of the four bogies has a pivot and then the bolster (2 bogies attach to the bolster at each end) has a pivot.  When we were researching them the guys at DRS said that this allows them to go round some very tight dockyard curves more easily than say a 66.

Cheers Mike

Surely that just aids in terms of wheels rubbing against rails rather than the envelope the vehicle moves through, i.e inner overhang etc? That would surely be dictated by the pivot points of the bolsters?

Yes (and no), it isn't just about rubbing against rails but weight distribution and min radius.  You are right in terms of the pivot points of the bolsters determines the degree of overhang of the central section but that is a lot further in than say on a Mk3.  The KUA bolster pivot point is underneath the ends of the main frame ie well inbound of the full length of the wagon.

min radius

That's what I meant in terms of rubbing, I put it that way as the minimum radius vs gauging will also be down to the aforementioned overhang so was trying to say that without using the term.

But yes I agree with what you say and the point about the overhang was more to be sure it wasn't going to be a nuisance on the layout I think

Hi everyone,

We hope to preview the decorated samples of the KUAs in the coming weeks, but in the meantime here is a bit of visual filth with a modern Class 37/4 also due from us.... :)
