RMweb Premium 30368 Posted July 30, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 30, 2020 (edited) Painting almost finished, next will be lining transfers, naming and builders plate. Sorry rather out of focus. Brush painting of smokebox etc looks fine. I mixed humbrol satin with matt black (about 1:3) and thinned with turps. Valve gear has been stained with humbrol light, dark brown followed by blue/black in that order. Picture really does not do justice!. RMweb Premium 30368 Posted July 31, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 31, 2020 I have now completed the weathering of the main chassis as far as I intend to take it on this model although I still have to weather the trailing pony and front part of the chassis which are part of the body. I have re-united the main components with the body which required some paint scraping to fit the frame around the cylinder area. Cab is still a temporary fit and I won't fit the deflectors until nameplate is fitted. I am very, very pleased with the result and recommend the DJH kit. The lining transfers should arrive today so that is the next stage and then onto the tender the etches for which look great. Some pictures - very minor paint damage to correct. RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 1, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 1, 2020 Applying Fox lining transfers, I thought the boiler bands would be a real problems but dividing each into three sections made life much easier. The single orange line along the edge of the running plate was another story! Really hard but no fault of the transfers, I need more practice! Some pictures, boiler bands on one side done! Smoke deflector balanced on running plate to see what it looks like. I will fit O/H flashes to firebox later. Kind regards, Richard B
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 4, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 4, 2020 60523 is almoust finished. It requires the various front foot steps to finish and then weathering but I will leave that until I have built the tender so that the weathering is consistant. The tender etches look to be very fine. The DJH A2/3 kit is very, very good and I recommend it. It goes together very well and produces a very good representation of the prototype. Combined with the High Level coreless motor and gearbox it is also very powerful and given its weight, traction is very good. I have really enjoyed building it. You cant see it in this view but I have fitted an AWS Receiver to the bogie. Given I have choosen tp model 60523 in its last few years as I remember it, I have also fitted a speedometer drive too. RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 6, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 6, 2020 Some tender details. As I mentioned earlier, the DJH etches for the tender body are really good and the same approach of using material in a way that best suits the component, for example, the tender tanks and coal chute are white metail and jolly good too. I've made similar components from individual brass etches and assembly is very fiddly! The tender chassis is white metal and is fixed to the body with a couple of set screws and captive nuts in the body. Tender body bent to shape, tumblehome is as supplied in the kit. Soldering on the captive nut retainers - tinned the brass with 145 degree solder and then low melt solder the retainers to the brass. I did think about fitting the white metal tender top casting but wanted to ensure as square a body as possible which may have been more difficult with the top casting interfering. Tender body main components in place. Kind regards, Richard B
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 7, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 7, 2020 Tender chassis constructed. I soldered one side of the chassis frame to the central spine of the chassis making sure it was all square. I then fitted all the wheelsets and then aligned the other frame so that it was aligned with the first ensuring that all the axles were at 90 degrees to each frame. I then used superglue to locate the second frame to prevent movement. I then soldered the second frame to the spine. I can now move onto the detail. A few pictures. Lastly, I played around with the MS software to produce a monocrome picture of the loco Kind regards, Richard B
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 15, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 15, 2020 (edited) Tender is now complete and ready for completion of painting. The fact that the body is detachable from the chassis makes this much easier. A few snaps: Chassis detail all added. Detail of brake gear etc. I used a "heavy duty" Markits screw coupling. Pickups in place with original wiring ..... ... which was replaced with a two pin micro connector (Peanuts from Amazon). All done ready for the spray booth. But will give the body a good cleaning with old toothbrush and soapy water. Kind regards, Richard B Edited August 15, 2020 by 30368

RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 18, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 18, 2020 (edited) The tender for 60523 is undergoing painting and lining so whilst waiting for drying times etc .. I thought I would start 60113 "Great Northern". Lots of bits. This is a fairly old secondhand kit so etches are tarnished. First time I have used a resin boiler, I can foresee a few problems with this but that is nothing new! Frames cleaned up and bearings soldered in. I find the Crown Line (PDK) fold up frames easy to work with and in my trusty Poppy jig for soldering the frame stretchers. Great Northern lives! No turning back now... Added some additional rivit detail and the inspection covers over the bogie as in "Sun Castle". RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 18, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 18, 2020 Hi Emma, Its a while ago now (4-5 years) but I think it was the 4mm Medium. It is simple to use and does the job. Like your cat picture, we have two black cats, Reggie and Ronnie, and they are brothers and do tend to terrorise the local rodent population but we are in the wilds of Wiltshire so plenty of scope for them. Kind regards, Richard B
KalKat
Thanks for that Richard, Poppy's descriptions of size are a little odd. My cat is called Spook and seems to run the local Mafia.... he used to beat up anything in this side of the village including foxes at night. He is getting rather ancient now and tends to take it easy Emma
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 19, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 19, 2020 Will start lining 60523's tender this afternoon. 60113 continues with work on the chassis. The rear extension to the mainframe to support the firebox and trailing wheel needs careful bending and checking against the (Isinglass drawing 4/390) drawing and to ensure that it is equal on both sides of the centreline. I've added some rivit and other detail to the bogie frame since the bogie is so prominent in Thompson pacifics. Having bent the bogie side frames, I used the bogie wheel axles to centre the bearings before soldering them in place. The two motion plates will be next and I will solder the 16BA setscrews in place before soldering the plates to the mainframes. Apologies to Crownline/PDK, the kit includes the inspection cover above the bogie in the etches! Read the instructions Richard... RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 20, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 20, 2020 Sun Castle almoust finished, requires sandpipes and weathering/cleaning. It runs really well. Kind regards, Richard B 5

RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 21, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 21, 2020 60523 is now finished. As I mentioned earlier, I always try to re-create a picture of the prototype when painting and weathering. In this case, I super shot of Sun Castle at Grantham by Keith Pirt (If you admire LNER pacifics and have not got a copy I suggest that you get one). Really enjoyed building 60523, great kit and great motor anf gearbox so thanks DJH and HighLine. On to 60113! Kind regards, Richard B 3

RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 23, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 23, 2020 Good afternoon, hope the weather is not too bad. Have now packed away "Sun Castle". Please excuse my ignorance but I had assumed that adding a few pictures of 60523 to a gallery would allow me to use the pictures in my threads, I was very surprised that they were also published in the wider website. Continue to build 60113 mainframes. She is now an 0-6-2. Front and rear motion plates soldered in position having first soldered the 16BA set screws in position. The rear mainframe extension is vulnerable so (as suggested) I have run a solder filit along the half etched fold lines. The trailing wheel casting in position. RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 24, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 24, 2020 I have started to assemble the valve gear but soon discovered that the outer part of the motion plate reverser bracket was missing from the kit so scratch built these items. RMweb Premium 30368 Posted August 25, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 25, 2020 A quick update this morning, its a special birthday for Mrs B so can't spend too much time in the den. Moving on to valve gear - first job is to remove the wheelsets and ream the axle holes (1/8"). Before removing the wheels, I scribed the outside diameters on the frames so that I can position the plunger pick-ups correctly. I am going to use Markits deluxe crankpins and I am going to try using Markits return crank too. Never used before but the DJH A2/3 kit has something similar and works very well so I thought I would give it a try. Concerned about the diameter of the journal so will use a scrap piece of N/S the same size as coupling and connecting rod "lands" and drill to return crank journal diameter to check if it still has integrity. PS picture of wrong return cranks I will use the correct ER type. Lastly, just a reminder that it is worth using Locktite to secure the crankpins to the wheels. Kind regards, Richard B
RMweb Premium DLT Posted August 25, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 25, 2020 Very nice. I'm interested to see how you get on with the Markits return-cranks. Cheers, Dave.
John Tomlinson
Equally, very interested to see how these work. Presumably they are used instead of crankpins on the driven axle? John. 1
