Dapol to launch new & revised 156s

Hi Gang,

Just received the Hatton’s newsletter with the good news that the Dapol 156 is going to have a chassis update and be retailed in two new liveries.
Finally, the Strathclyde Red livery makes the cut along with a Northern Rail scenic livery, although I think the plain Northern Rail livery might be a better seller.

What will be interesting to see if this will provide a fillip for the Revolution Class 320 to get the required numbers in Strathclyde Red. Here’s hoping!

Later,
Stu in EGYP.

Might also encourage take-up of 314s in SPT orange as well.

As for the Dapol 156 in Northern livery, yes, a little odd as a choice - perhaps the Northern [formerly] ‘by Arriva’ would have been more useful and/or desirable....

So, is there any photographic evidence that a Strathclyde orange one ever made it to Mallaig/Oban/Fort William or do I need to evoke Rule 1?

Looking forward to an upgraded 156. I've just reworked a mixed set into BR Provincial 3-Car 156445, as used on the WHL and had to remove the trailer bogies before doing any work, as they just fall out otherwise. Hope that's been fixed.

Hi Gang;

This is an incredibly unfortunate incident with the reversed BR logos, but not insurmountable, due to the specialist decal retailers we have at our disposal.

I would like to think, that due to the error being at the manufacturer level, then Dapol would underwrite a run of replacement decals to be provided free of charge to customers who buy the model, which otherwise looks excellent. The precedent has been set for this course of action as Realtrack provided decals to correct a printing error on the Castle Cement PCAs. This ensured that all those who bought their models in good faith could correct the error.

In this case, if I were Dapol, I would provide a BR logo on a colour-matched Strathclyde Red/Orange patch to overlay the error, PLUS provide the logos on their own for those who prefer to remove the reversed design. This would be a total of 4 of each logo on a sheet, plus maybe a couple for spares.

This would serve to protect Dapol's reputation and show respect and concern for their valued customers (IMHO).

All very applaudable but I think we are more likely to see pigs flying first.  Dapol are at Ally Pally this weekend, perhaps I should have a word...

With a bit of luck you might find some cheap 156s on the NQP stand.

I don’t know how difficult it would be to remove the arrows without causing damage to the underlying paint colour, but would I be correct in thinking that the 156 pictured at Malliag doesn’t appear to have any so might be an easy fix if so.

As well as the arrows being wrong (which was present on the original artwork, clearly showing insufficient checking through livery samples), the red cantrail line above the white on the roof seems to be work of fiction also - I can find no evidence of them on prototype photos of 156509 or any other SPTE era Super Sprinter.

Really amateurish....the logos were wrong on the initial artworks, showing no satisfactory checking was done....combined with other recent livery foul ups like the Fag packet HST and Mk3 sleepers. I am a modeller and happy to make changes, but this is just poor form from Dapol - they really risk becoming a joke in N Gauge if they don't tighten up. Very glad I repainted my own 156512 and didn't wait on Dapol's....

Come on you guys at Dapol - we need Dapol in the N Gauge market!

Cheers,
Alan

The fault was included on the images most model shops have been using a place-holder for pre-orders.

I can't believe that nobody from Dapol, the model shops or potential buyers didn't spot this sooner. If they did and let Dapol know, then shame on you Dapol for not fixing it.

Let's be honest,  Dapol livery deco hasn't been a strong point for many a year. Incorrect fonts, stretched logos and weird colours seem a speciality.

These things happen. I've just sent a some vinyls to a customer which are missing the branding on one end car. Much easier for me to put right than a container load of Sprinters.

I genuinely feel for Dapol here. We can chunter and moan on internet forums but for them it is a very costly mistake in lost sales or replacement bodies.

If anyone at Dapol is reading this, I genuinely am happy to repeat my offer to advise on any livery proofs - the Sectorisation era  is something of a speciality of mine.

Well that's another Dapol product this year that I won't be buying full price due to decoration issues (other item was mk3 sleeper).  Its a real shame as Dapol seem to be competitively priced.

I'd not noticed the pre production images - think I'd only seen a real world placement photos.  There is no discussion over on the Dapol Digest forum regarding this batch of liveries as far as I can see either.

They really need to get a grip on this.

Having dropped out the world of O gauge partly due to the lack of quality despite the prices going up Dapol are proving to be a right one twice in a row now here in N gauge. The mk3 sleeper was substandard and as result needs paint and transfers. The ST 156 isn't much better. My work bench queue is now huge although I will persevere.
