Irish wagon builds

Well over the years the "rainy day pile" of wagons grew and with COV 19 meaning at a loose end for several! weekends the pile got turned over and some progress made - might even finish a few .. well no rush is there. Irish_modelling__06072020_001.jpg.3a2d916a87e39b032f581197c4cac2c2.jpgAirfix and SSM conversion into Fuel tank wagons, Some pallet cements get in the pic but these await inspiration for next stage.Irish_modelling__06072020_010.jpg.d3dc0156e8588aaa7e0f0281413aadae.jpgCement bogie, one of three off ebay  with added parts from Lanarkshire models, AI models, Stenson models and Wizzard models - all great suppliers with quick and very quick turn around of orders, thanks ! Lots more to do with pipes and details to add. In back ground are two of six ammonia tanks - heavy resin models with massive bogie boss - once cut off bogie ride height just right - gloss white from Halfords- Audi Ibis white and looks the part looking at the odd phot od a clean wagon - most of the time in the last years of operation a good dose of rail grime covered the white.

Well two more  SSM 42 foot flat -soldering  origami, only the container pockets glued on, in green as basis for barrier on the tanks behind.  Not shown but have started on container which is a brass fold up masterpiece.

The second pic is of two Resin MIR tara mines wagons doctored to look like the shale wagons from Kilmastulla - Limerick flow two or more are now in Tara mines pool. - impressionistic as ends are wrong but in a train it should be ok and a variation on the IRM wonderments.

In the background like a dead insect is a 3D print Sperry container and a 3d print 42 foot flat - came out just as IRM gave the good news on an RTR version.. life is just like that. The 3D prints are very good and with a box on and the IRM as an empty gives a good looking train - well it would if I had an Irish layout,  maybe one day but regardless it is a good use of downtime.

some more pics , Sperry container and Ammonia tank, just ordered transfers and a 47 foot flat from Mayner models on shapeways - bogies on order from Sudio scale models.  The big tanks - now got six needed surgery to chassis as bogie bosses far to big - total removal and with MIR bogie sides adapted to fit brass inner frames from Stenson models - these adapted with scrap brass soldered on and Kd 20s glued on  look the part but some buffer lock so need a revisit and it seems Ford pine greed from Halfords is the go to colour for the frames on these now in real life cut up big tankers. More wagon action , Pallet with two blues to see what looks best - darker blue I think .

Another shot of the three cement bogies showing better the A1 TTA mesh walk walk way trimmed to fit, 1mmsq section on first and last bracket to give a glue landing as walkwayetch is about 1mm short, Also A1 cheque plate on end  .

The flat now has had bogies painted and second one finished and painted but waits more sideframes from SSM.   I have now ordered a 47foot flat for the sperry and unusually for a  flat will be black instead of bauxite - but still to get some grime.

Off topic a bit but yes , started 1979 on buffets and got "whizz kid" as nickname on first day by Sue Demont and been on staff until 1991 but still volunteer as a guard and builders mate - organised parts of working parties since 1990s  and do stores works for company builders ( both of them ! )  Done track ,civils, controlling and cafe manager- 1984 when needs musted!   A very good grounding for life and same enjoyed by many -now with careers on big railways across the globe.

I saw this and was wondering what the hell it was, but I see that it's the Sperry Ultrasonic train container which I was not aware of until today. This is what I love about the Irish railways, they just do things in their own wonderfully weird and unique way.

Going back a few pics it did occur that the model 42` bogie flat has seen several versions so to round up the story a few pics of my small collection from sources , Hornby cut and shut - the first version by many. MIR cast which was the first kit , followed by SSM etched brass wonderment, then Mayer produced a very good 3D print- and does the 47 foot as well.  Last but no means least is the brilliant IRM crews rtr beauty.  So setting sail.CIEbogie_flat_280820_005.jpg.708988d76a8be0d93a7ad74be49d6a45.jpg

Part 2

Over view of the MIR cast - cleverly thoughtout to use a half casting with overlap twice to give strength, save on moulds  and shrinkage issues.  I am sure many Irish models have some of these.

Next up the SSM brass-gami fold up version this one is a super glued  second hand one I got with another not started - soldered that one but did glue on the natty pockets on the sides - some 24 per kit! but with its cast buffers is really a good model

Correction to above I have two other normal 47 flats  but in a box at home in Wales.   What I have learned is that MIR also did a 42 flat in resin and 47 foot to boot - so these have been obtained and hopefully some more bogies from SSM and I can add to what I thought as a newcomer- ish to CIE and NIR modeling was a good bit of history.. every day a school day I guess.   CIE also had a version of a Salmon rail panel carrier and what is known as the steel train - rails on stacker wagons  so something else to ponder over - but would give a way of displaying some 21mm gauge track.

Well MIR made white metal 42 foot flats but also resin ones produced so here is a pic of a 42 and a 47 resin flat, on SSM bogies and Lanarkshire models buffers and draw hooks , paint, brake wheel, couplings and transfers. Both deserve extra trussing and brake cross tubes and vac gear but I will just paint and leave as an example of the history of the production of the 42 flat in 4mm for the Irish scene modeller. Fytipping_210920_005.jpg.fc5c58fc090c533b0dbd5f195014a0dc.jpgFytipping_210920_003.jpg.cd89cfb13b167c2cd4bd81b5a7c47bc7.jpg

Well the third and final tank  done with railtec transfers - omitted the Heuston message so all five done just to weather, Sperry got another 12 tiny transfers added and the MIR resin got primer last night and a dusting in Railmatch this morning - transfers tonight and so only couplings and containers to add..

Cement tanker one of three on the bench , progressed with etched ladder soldered on to horizontal and a bit of 0.45  wire soldered on and bent to form handrail, I got six bent to almost match  and given battering real ones got not to bad. The Cap and pipe for extracting cement from plastic rod the long air pipe added from rod , bend made up with aide of candle to soften plastic. ends drilled o.6 to take a connector . end tank moved to correct place and pipe routed  . Just need to make the other two match.  The real wagon had a little peaked cover over brake distributor so started on these .   Modelling_250920_003.jpg.268f9ac4aafd2b16902a047842105206.jpg
