Signal Box Photos

I've rediscovered and begun sorting through and scanning some slides taken by a long-departed friend. There are no notes with them unfortunately, and I am coming across ones that were clearly taken on the same occasion/film randomly distributed between a number of processors boxes!

The box this was in contains stuff taken in Plymouth, East Devon and the North East, plus an unidentified air show, some studio portraits and a Class 76 in a scrapyard!

Can anybody help with the location of this one, please. The box may be closed as its nameboard seems to have been graffitied. However, there are still notices etc hanging inside the windows. Best guess as to date is 1980s.

Photo: The late Norman Armstrong.

Thanks in hopeful anticipation. There may well be more to follow in time...

I will be checking my photos when I get back near the discs and drives  they are stored on.

Probably going to be mid May before I get time to go through and check for any MIA .

If anything is going to be retrieved from previous posts by the  site it should have happened by then.

Might even find a few more while I am at it.

Photo by Robin Stewart Smith Saxby Junction on the Syston Junction to Manton Junction route....

Now then, a question for the learned ladies and gents of this 'ere parish - does anyone have or can anyone point me to a track diagram of this location...? I've googled it and the only things which came up were the above photo and a very basic map. The reason I ask is that I sign the road from Syston to Manton (and onwards down through the Welland Valley to Kettering) and have always been intrigued by the remains of the track beds and the bridges that seem to radiate in different directions, there is also what appears to be the old station buildings in private ownership at an angle to the remaining / existing route.

Over to you folks.... 😉

It's all a bit complicated Nidge.  The M and GN went off here and that small bridge you see when travelling in the down direction pre dates the junction and was closed after the railway company made peace with Lord Harborough and he let them build an easier curve on his land . There is more too it than that, was in backtrack a few years back

One from Australia whilst I am here for a couple of years. Corinda Box in Brisbane, controls the main suburban network to Roma Street and the converging freight only Tennyson loop line. Shot was into the sun which always appears to be in the wrong place at this location.Corinda_box_lr.thumb.jpg.cdf88e9509c12e1c751ed5cf867a3ddb.jpg

According to the signalman the last operational mechanical signal box in Queensland.

(* Considering the size of the state that's a bit like saying, "Staying in Europe"!)

Solved the problem. Take a photograph during a lull in the rain.

Peter Smith has a book out on Amazon 'The Syston to Peterborough Railway' which has line drawings of each junction and station.

Apart from going through the maps on the NLS website, I think that the book is your best bet.

Look out for me at Wymondham Crossing (night shift this week!!)

Regards

Another from Down under. I was in Toowoomba, about 80 miles from Brisbane and came across the station that sees one passenger train on only two days a week, the rest of the time it is freight, mainly coal. On the station is a lever frame room. Levers show pointwork around the station, but there is also a signal box, in the distance, that was inaccessible for a picture.

Just scanned these pictures of Blue Anchor box from 1995. From memory, I believe it was staff and paper ticket to Williton at the time, the staff being used to unlock the wooden box visible.

Since then, motor points have been put on the down facing points.

The preserved Cromer Beach signal box yesterday......

The site apparently falls under the remit of the NNR but is staffed & maintained by about half a dozen local volunteers, with a notice on the entrance gate to the former cattle dock area off Holt Road in Cromer stating that they are "Open the first Saturday of the month".   In practice, I was told yesterday that people are usually (but not guaranteed) working on site every Wednesday and Saturday.    If there is not a padlock on the entrance gate, then the site is "open" and visitors are welcomed. No admission charge is made.

Spent about 45 minutes there yesterday talking to the very friendly & knowledgeable volunteers.

There is a demonstration point/ground signal on site that are connected to a couple of the levers so you get a chance to work those during your visit.

I was a signalman at blue anchor from 1983 to around 2015 so I know it well. Indeed, at that time it was staff and ticket to Williton.  The annets key lock next to the ticket box was the starting signal release (No 13). This proved you had the train staff before you could pull 13.  I think in 1995 the token system to Minehead was run over BT lines.  These required either a 1or 2 second (I don't remember which) plunge to make the bell ring and to get a release.  You could not ratttle of bell codes, it was very slow. It's all on dedicated cabling now.
