Well the first MK4 has arrived (R40163 - GNER Coach K) - quite a few finish issues with the glazing and paint and what I assume are production tabs left intact on the bottom of the body - hopefully everyone elses are better!

I'd be sending that straight back

That looks like something you'd find  second hand unboxed rather than a brand new model. I wonder if the factory producing these is new to Hornby as we haven't seen quality issues like that in many of their other products?

Very nice Darius! The love how the lighting catches the typical look of the late 1990s PP East Coast GNER livery!)  I would return them Adam as they are in such poor condition! I hope all my original BR INTERCITY Swallow MK4 coach stock, including MK4 DVT are in pristine condition too! I've been in regular contact with my stockist. I am still waiting for mine which  I am told is due very soon! Mine obviously is the BR Class 91002 Durham Cathedral named after a very beautiful English city and Catherdal off topic (but well done Bradford! a very well deserved winner! Can Exeter please be nominated for UK City of Culture 2029?! As I'm from Devon and The beautiful Royal Clarence will be restored by then 2024 according to architectures, English heritage and Exeter city Council following the devastation from 2016 so why not let the South West be nominated?!).

Great pics Darius.

Very interesting that the red stripe has the word RESTAURANT on it - I didnt realise the FOs had this.

Looks like they've used a similar shade of GNER blue to their most recent GNER releases (which were a good few years back). To my eye, it's a bit light and not quite as accurate as the GNER blue that they used on their earlier GNER releases, around the year 2000, but these things are subjective.

The “Restaurant” label was one of the first things I noticed upon unboxing.  Can’t find a picture of a GNER Mk4 FO with this lettering on the web.   Is it correct or an error?

Cheers

Here's one of Coach K with Restaurant and First logos - presumably that coach is next to the buffet in the rake.

Coach M (and presumably L?) look to only have First Class.

When GNER refurbished all the fleet under “project Mallard”  a lot of TSO’s were reclassified as FO’s to bring all the sets into the same formation. ( TSOE, TO TO TO TSOD, TBK, FO , FO FO, DVT)   The buffet coaches were turned round so that the kitchens were next to the FO that was 1/2 restaurant, 1/2 FO.   This is how the sets remain. In BR/Intercity days , when first introduced there weren’t enough M4’s to make up a full rake so some were 7+DVT and some 8+DVT. Eventually there were enough M4 TSO, to make up a full 9+DVT. The formation being. TSOE, TSO, TSO, TSO, TSO, TSOD, RFM, FO , FO, DVT (STANDARD FORMATION) and the others were TSOE, TSO, TSO, TSO, TSOD, RFM, FO FO FO DVT (PULLMAN FORMATION. )  I Believe  Hornby Weill be doing the IC M4’s into an 8 car formation.

The GNER coach lettering would be  A, B, C, D, E, G ( or H )K, (restaurant) L, M ( unless anyone knows different, I’ll stand corrected)

I always thought this was a shame that the seated part of the Buffet car became standard class, and strange that the adjacent FO became half restaurant. If you were going to half half a restaurant car, why not keep it as built, within the same vehicle as the kitchen.

In intercity days, the bulk of the 'dining' on regular services happened in the first class half of the Buffet car, and this is my one (and only) experience of intercity restaurant dining (and I remember we were asked to leave our 'first class' restaurant seats and return to our standard seats after we had finished eating... despite it only being about 45 minutes to Kings Cross at that time...)

The models look excellent as engineered, but as @adamvb shows, the QC and production quality has some massive failings. Not good.

Just to update on this - Hornby were very quick to reply and have checked all other stock and it appears mine may have been a production reject that was packed by mistake. The coaches will be back in stock with Hornby on Monday all being well now they have been checked and they will process a replacement. Mistakes happen and they've been quick to respond which is great, and with all the other images on here and Facebook it appears I was just genuinely unlucky/it was a mistake - will update when the replacement arrives.

In fairness to them a great response. Mine arrived from KMRC on Saturday and is blemish-free.

Seems I spoke too soon. Received the next 4 coaches and 3 of them have the glue runs around the window frames. Hoping my retailer has belmish free models to replace with.

Oh no! 7 more have arrived for me today and 2 of them have the blemishes around the windows again which is unfortunate (mine are coach E and M - which are yours?).

I did get a replacement for my first coach and it was blemish free, but it did take a few calls and a couple of weeks with Hornby CS - hopefully these will be resolved quicker!

When they get these returns that arent easy to correct what happens to em....in the bin or sold off cheap as factory seconds?

Having been to their Visitors Centre before I know they have, or at least used to have, a reduced shelf, where you could pick up locos and rolling stock. Some was just old catalogue stuff but some items had a small amount of damage to either the box or the model like a missing buffer etc. If this is still going I'd assume it end up either there or the bin.

I think they could try doing a "nearly perfect" sale like Bachmann do but this is Hornby and I can't see them trying it which is a shame .

They look really nice. Thanks for sharing.

I did preorder these rakes in the end as the 67 is ok and it avoids all the issues with the new Hornby 91, so looking forward to receiving mine.

Excellent!

Can't help but notice the light clusters on the DVT appear to be the older 'IOO OOI' style with the separate markers. Hornby very clearly stated that the 91 and DVT would have the correct light clusters to match the era modelled on each version (TfW having the modern LED ones). I have a funny feeling they've f'd this one up. Also same goes for the cab interiors with the forward-facing CCTV. This model appears to have missed that...

I hate to be a moaner, but when you're paying a fair whack, and Hornby promise they're doing X Y Z about something, it's really boiling the wet stuff to see that they've messed up... again.
