Gwili railway heritage railway layout oo gauge

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I am planning to model my own heritage railway where i help out as a volunteer. The Gwili steam railway. I've decided to go freelance  for the period as with a heritage railway, i can run what is there on the line  both now, the past and the future.  As it on the old Carmarthen to aberystwyth line I can turn it to a full GWR line if I want.  I've chosen the sites of several locations on the railway, BA Mpd, LLC, as it mainly used for events and I can use some of my narrow gauge or n gauge stock for the miniature railway and Conwil.  I have already got a track plan of sorts worked out but things are on hold with lockdown, clearing space to store it.  I am planning to use scenery model railway supplies micro layouts that fits into the christmas tree box. with a fiddle yard each end. I am planning to keep it simple so the picnic area and the bridge are out. I would have done them if it would be a permanent fixed layout than a module one.  I have started to collect the stock for the line, even made a list of what been there and still is there currently which has been some fun finding out about them. I've  even found out some interesting information about what use to run  on the line in GWR days and BR days.

I will update when I can. I will also put the list up of stock.

So I thought I would put up  THE STOCK list. I can describe the track plan as a main running line with loop with another siding into C&W workshop hopeful, with a line of straight for the miniature railway.

Not much to update at present due to many different things delayed by covid-19, which is a shame when you want to get on with things but that is life. I have been repainting one of my J94s into the colour of Phoenix which use to belong to the Swansea vale railway before moving to the Gwili. I am slowly building a pair of Dogfish wagons which were on the line at one point before being sold but are back with a shark to help with ballast work. I am also building a model of the tea rooms from ratio ground coach body's and also doing a toad done as Santa grotto during some of the early christmas at the gwili. I thought I would add some photo's of the locos so far and the RRV excavator I have just finished based on the one at the gwili.

Track plan of LLC, so from the plan you can see. the main running line with with loop and hopeful a siding into C&W WORKSHOP. there is a plan to put in a bit of 009 to act as 7 1/4 inch gauge but might have another think about that part. the board is  1657 mm longs by 221mm wide with the height at 250mm.

Like with everything at the moment there are delay's in starting due to shortage which is not a bad thing really as it given me more time to test my models outs but also do more research into the area and what run there before it came a heritage railway, been able to find a fair bit out. My loco list has expanded more and a up to date one will go up in due course. here are some pictures of the station during it use as a heritage line. Not happy with some of my kit stock, so looking for R-T-R which I can find. the kit ones will be ok for siding's than running.

The boards are due monday, so hopeful can make a start. But I have been researching the traffic on the line in GWR/BR DAYS, and think I have got some idea of what goods and passenger working happen on the line.

Until I am next at my model club where there should still be a copy of Bradshaw guide, I have been going through two book The manchester and Miford railway by oakwood press and the Aberystwyth to carmarthen book by middleton press. Both have been really helpful but the one that middleton press have done helps more by putting some OS maps which does gives you some idea of what was in the area, well worth getting!

I have worked out from it and from what people have said on this thread what traffic there was a lot of it guess work.

Woolen mills- incoming wool, dye, equipment, coal. outgoing Cloth, blankets etc?

Implement Factory- incoming metal, wood, coal, equipment. outgoing  water wheels, equipment, scrap.

Flannel factory- incoming cloth, dye, equipment, coal. outgoing flannel shirts mainly.

corn mill- incoming corn, equipment, coal. Outgoing flour, corn syrup?

Quarry incoming- coal,gunpowder,equipment. outgoing,stone,road stone,lead.

Gravel pit incoming coal, gunpowder, equipment. outgoing gravel.

Sewage works incoming coal,equipment,stones, outgoing?

Are you making your own boards, or have you bought ready-made ones? Thanks.

The boards have come and now seeing which model shop has got track. Going to be using model tech track joiners to help with power supply between each board. Doing one boring but most important job to do measuring up stock to work out the length of the train fiddle yard to see I have got to order more boards. Work in progress Rosyth no1 in working order when at gwili. Hattons model. IMG_20210806_184055.jpg.b288a4b1412c6f4fb80fc6558a5951f8.jpg

Worked out how many board's I will need to order, it will be 8 altogether 4 each side. After measuring with my longest loco and a coach did I work on my shelf test board did I found a formula for how mand boards will be needed. Both together were about 30 inches which left 5 inches left on 1 of the shelves board which showed me how much longer I needed.

I have ordered the fiddle yard boards but had to send them back due to warping whilst they had been kept at courier depot near something warm. A real shame at least they could be replaced. A rare find 1906 OS Maps covering the line from Carmarthen to Newcastle Emlyn very interesting items.

I have ordered the track but in part's to spread the cost but it is a start.  One new unit to join the gwili roster if it happened is a class 142 pacer Hornby one which with help from some fellow modellers have we got it running smooth. 5526 is due to come to the railway, be nice to see small prairie again on gwili metals. I have sent a loco off for being built to mountain Ash loco no 1 Hudswell clarke 0-6-0. https://images.app.goo.gl/JVVJ9vN9agjXBcTCA

Like every thing, the build is on hold for the moment. Since my last post I have been working at the railway and it is surprising how you can forget to do some modelling. I have been adding more information on the railway in my research file which has helped me with what trains did run on the line. Found the in the railway book shed in the book 'the teifi Valley railway' by Roger padfield and barrie burgess. It covers all the railway companies that had used the line with what motive power some of which model companies made. They is some information errors but can't be always right. I heard from one source that a class 52 western did once run on the line love to find out if it was true. Done some coupling repairs on some stock but they don't seem to all run happily but can find a use for them. There's talk of a HST power car coming to the railway but weather it will run is another story. A couple of J72 and J83 acting as visitors for standby models. Would love to model the Christmas train with lights but in OO gauge I don't think there's something suitable on the market.

Some testing stock Photo's to share with you . These will be running on LLC but to save them from being stuck in the draw and box, I thought I give them a test run at SRMG Swansea railway model group.

Gone to mark out the track plan but as usual something has happened to change the plan. Luckily I had not fully put them together but just using the flat tops of the boards to make it easier to put things out. Busy time with Christmas but gots some pictures of the train in action which I was lucky to get due to carparking duty not for the fainthearted. Got some new carriage and a peckett w4 for Christmas. Got to do a new stock take on what I have got. Shame the Manor I had ordered is delayed due to covid. Some of the locomotives were on ITV Wales news.

I've heard of the Gwili Railway but I've not been to it as it's too far away for me.

I'm also modelling part of a preserved railway: the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which stretches from Pickering to Grosmont and Whitby. I'm modelling a part of Grosmont MPD: the wheel drop and the two storage sidings behind it.

If you want to have a look, I've put the link here:

I have heard of the nymr. Love to visit one day, perhaps you should have a chat with the nymr and see if you can have access or help with your layout planning.
