Abandoned rails in the road.....(or elsewhere...)

And another left over short bit of tram track, this time in Edinburgh.  It is at the end of Princes Street in Waterloo Place, complete with the line of the conduit in the centre between the rails. The former North British Railway Hotel  - now the Balmoral - is behind the buses in the middle distance.  Acknowledgment to Google Street View.  [Alisdair]

That is the location of the slot for the cable, as Edinburgh originally had cable trams. They never electrified using the Conduit current collection system.

Groveport, Ohio (south of Columbus) has deliberately left in-situ approximately 1/3 mile of track in Blacklick Street, as part of a historic district. The rails once belonged to the Scioto Valley Traction Company, an Interurban Railway in central Ohio.

Explorations last summer in the Hamble - Netley area.  First part is the Hamble rail trail.  The footpath, for some distance, runs parallel to the rail lines which seem to remain in places beneath undergrowth and appear at road crossings, such as Hamble Lane:

Rails also appear at intermediate road crossings and at the oil terminal destination:

Further exploration not far from Netley.  The grounds of the former Royal Victoria Hospital have become a park [with its own miniature railway].  The Hospital had its own rail access from the main line, as shown on OS maps of the area, and there are small traces of the approach routes.  In the vicinity of the former hospital station, there are rails in place and  the park has information boards that explain the railway connection and layout.

Is this properly abandoned? Burcott Road Hereford where the line to the Bulmer cider factory crosses it. This loop used to link the current station with Barton Station. The connection to the branch has been plain lined so nothing can get there, but the line is still officially open. There must be miles of railway in a similar position.

This  was the track of the Bellingham and Skagit Interurban Railway - https://www.historylink.org/File/10904 - part of an an interurban which was intended to connect Bellingham with Seattle. The north end was built from Bellingham through Fairhaven to Mount Vernon, and the south end from Seattle to Everett. However, they were built late in the interurban era and were never joined, connection between them being made by bus.

Strictly speaking, this isn't genuinely left over from the original Edinburgh trams as it was, I understand, relaid in this position when they were being dismantled. (Its in the middle of the road whereas originally there were two tracks centred on the middle of the road.)

A couple from the Llanthony Priory area on the western side of the Gloucester and Sharpness canal, adjacent to where the transit shed used to be, and where St Ann Way now crosses the canal:

Thanks to all for posting these - I find the scenes fascinating, one can't help trying to imagine the trains running.........

A picture which really grabbed my attention appears in Bernard Mills' book 'From Lostwithiel to the China Clay Rails' - a must-have for anyone interested in Cornish china clay branches - showing rails embedded in the concrete road access to the erstwhile Collins Dryer at the very end of the Retew branch. Taken in June 2014 the scene shows rails apparently curving up a Cornish lane, the right-hand one disappearing into the hedge and the left-hand one following the course of the lane as it curves up and away to the right. Now that I'm back in the area I'm curious enough to go and find this for myself this summer.......

There's a short section of embedded rail here at Brackley. It's a bit odd that it's still there. It's a couple of hundred metres from the old top station so was probably part of a siding but it's strange that it survived when everything else was ripped up.

I do find it interesting to see how long old lines remain in the scenery. If you zoom about you can see the two lines that used to run past Brackley.

A new housing estate has been built on the Northern edge of town over the last couple of years and it's interesting that they've left the old railway embankment in place. They've landscaped it a bit and made a path but it's still intact. I assume that building on railway embankments is difficult so they've made it a park.

What's left of it (a filled in embankment) is due to be destroyed over the next couple of years because another tranche of houses is going up and access will be off that roundabout.

Remains of the Eling Wharf branch in Totton High Street.  A few years ago, about 2010, the remnants of a white painted crossing gate were present on the south (left) side.  The present fence is recent.  There are various tracks still visible within Eling Wharf itself.
