@Phil Parker, from your discussions with manufacturers over the years, has it ever been discussed why there are such limited livery options/reruns and how the liveries that are chosen are selected?

I ask as we tend to see the big two offering more limited liveries (e.g. maybe one banger blue every so often) but the newer entrants are often hitting several versions of the same livery at once. We also see some very “left-field” liveries selected, particularly from Hornby, that my only thought being that they are aimed primarily at the collector market.

It has been commented on here that the livery work must be fairly cheap and reruns with different numbers being a a good way of capitalising on the investment in tooling. I can’t say that have any evidence to support the views that have been expressed other than common sense.

Thanks,

Roy

I think there's a difference in production styles where Bachmann and Hornby are more playing the long game and drip-feeding a batch of models every now and then with the intention of continuing over years. For smaller manufacturers they're producing many more different options in the same production run with the most popular selling out first.

I think Hornby especially are exploiting the idea of if you want one then you need to buy it now while it is available with the various one-offs, but for many of these you can see when the catalogue is announced which will end up in the bargain bin sooner or later. Oddly, they frequently seem to ignore common liveries which should be easily big sellers.

Would quite agree on your 47 comments.  The big one on the bogies though is the brake frame equipment supposedly only for cabinet use (by far whilst incorrect with the pipes on one side - Lima's bogie frame is superior to all with respect to levels of detail if you look close, in my view)......  Like you say the roof pretty much just looks like the old one.  47004 does have the extra roof grille which is a nice touch.

Class 37, not seen any in the flesh, but have you politely mentioned your queries to the correct ears?  Also with the Class 37 I think that there are 3 or 4 varieties of bogies, so is that possibility the issue - the different types?

I'm told the fitting will be better on the production ones - lets hope so

As you suggest, it is unfair to judge the fit of parts on a livery sample as it is not really a good basis to see what is to come ( I assume these are painted EPs?).  I would rather look at the standard they have shown on other locos that are further down the development path.

Agreed. Proof in the pudding etc. For info it was a green one.

The 47 was always one of my favourite diesels, along with the Peak family. I know there was stuff to criticise but aesthetically I thought it a wonderfully clean and well sorted design which has dated remarkably well. I was always happy with the older Bachmann model and still think that although the old Lima model is very basic by todays standards it captured the look of the type very well and could be made into a terrific model but I think the new Bachmann model is well worth getting. On a layout I don't think it is that different from the older Bachmann version but the details are nicer and the underframe stuff and grills seem much nicer. I got the BR blue and two tone green releases and am delighted with them, I am not an expert on 47's and so really don't know enough to comment on the various diesels but to my eyes it looks right and I am looking forward to the large logo release.

I've just aquired a Bachmann 47 and really like the underframe and bogie details which are a big step forward IMO. My previous 47s were all vitrains (as I like the shape of them the most after adding Brians windscreen frames) and i was always puzzled by them as the body looked too short height wise. Compared to the new effort it's not the body thats the problem... its the bogies being too small! Left alone it looks like it's on stilts and when lowered it looks better but doesn't sit well with other stock.

Interesting to hear that, like you most of my 47 fleet is made up of improved Vi Trains examples and I was never convinced by the short height argument from some parts.   Might take one apart later and see how it looks with some Heljan bogie frames added.

I enquired about this loco with Kernow on 23.06 and got the following reply:

"I've had a quick reply from Bachmann.

The loco is on the next container which is currently due to them in mid July.

So we will probably have them in another 5-6 weeks."

Rails of Sheffield  just advertised an exclusive run of ROG Class 47/4  47-812. This livery looks absolutely superb. Just ordered a Sound Deluxe version. These wont hang about very long.

I was thinking I may have a decision to make regarding this or 712. This isn't like the model anymore so will stick to my guns with 712.

Gauge master/Heljan are doing 47815 in the same livery so could either compete with or help each other if wanting to work in a pair.

Thanks for the heads up as I hadn’t seen the post under the RoS thread.

It is a stunner but already got too much on preorder elsewhere! 😕

Ooh, good point, 815 is green now isn’t it! And owned by WCRC I think.

I'm with you - I'd been looking for an excuse to add one of the new sound deluxe 47s !

The Heljan 47815 is in a different type of ROG Livery. 47812 was the only Class 47 to wear this livery along with a few Class 57s.

Does anyone know when we can expect 47435?  It seems it isn’t one of the ones on the container which has just arrived from why this thread says?

You are aware that the Bachmann website gives release dates for models?

Thanks to the team at Kernow, I was fortunate to pick up the last standard model of 47363 they had with them at DEMU on Sunday. It’s a cracking model and I’m sure will be popular for them. There’s a nice set of etched name plates and ICI logo in the box too. I always liked the old railfreight livery, still got my old Hornby model from the 80’s when I was 7 or 8 so it’s nice to see this Thornaby machine done.

Thanks

Mark

At last a SF grey roof. That’s definitely one for me.

As for 47363, I stand to be corrected but was it the only 47 in Railfreight red stripe with the large BR logo on top of the red band? Since the loco was originally in Railfreight grey, I always assumed the red band was added but cropped so it didn’t cover the BR logo. But why bother…? If instead it was a full repaint by TE depot, why not the smaller logo?

Just ordered the Railfreight Red Stripe 47 from Kernow in Sound Fitted Deluxe. Been waiting for one of these to be released. I'm absolutely over the moon with this purchase.

Well done to Kernow for bringing this to the market and in this stunning livery.
