Salopian Models, Shrewsbury

Not much mention of Salopian models on here. They have been operating out of the Market hall in Shrewsbury. but has outgrown his stall and is moving into his own shop, 28a Castle street, opening 10th Jan. No connection with the retailer, but nice to see a shop back in town, and I wish the venture all the best,

That’s great news. I used to visit the Shrewsbury Model Centre as a kid back in the 80s and 90s and it’s always great to see a town return to the model railway “map” again.

Where I live there is no retailer in the town/city centres of Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Manchester or Doncaster for example. (Yes there are retailers -and good ones at that- in the region just off the beaten path a little.) I understand fully the retail pattern changes and why this is but this situation would have been inconceivable a couple of decades ago.

There has been a need for a decent model shop in Shrewsbury for a very long time. Indeed I still have lots of stuff which came from Hobby Specialists at the bottom of Wyle Cop.  Peter Lewis opened up Shrewsbury Model Centre however couldn’t beat the variety that Hobby Specialists had . I’m trying to think of the electrical shop who did model rail stuff in dog pole too   .

Will have to visit the new shop soon

It's really good to learn of a new model shop in Shrewsbury.  I'll tell my brother, although chances are he already knows.  Mention of Hobby Specialists brings back many happy memories.  Life for me as a teenager in the 1960s was very much centred around attending the Wakeman School on one side of the English Bridge and visiting Hobby Specialists on the other side.  It was a very small shop but, as mentioned, it certainly stocked a variety of products.   The electrical shop on Dogpole: I'm having to trawl hard through the memory banks...was it Durrant Electricals?  Or maybe even Radio Rentals?

Steve.

H Gareth, glad to be of service.  You can sleep easy now!  My memory for things in the long distance past is usually quite good.  Then my wife spoils it all by saying to folk, "Yeah, now ask him what happened last week..."

Steve.
