I was at the model railway club I go to last night and I found two boards. I enquired about them and asked if anyone was going to use them. No one wanted them so I decided to do something with them.

The board on the left will be the baseboard and the one on the right will be the backscene. (See photos below)

How it will look.

I've always been a fan of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and have been planning two NYMR based layouts which I've posted progress of on this site. However, those were just in the planning stages and I never got far with them. This is because I currently don't have the space or the stuff needed for them.

This will give me something to do while I wait to get the backscene sorted on the other layout I'm building which can be viewed here:

I'm currently watching Yorkshire Steam Railway on My5. I watching all the episodes to see if I can get any overhead views of the MPD.

I'm going to take pictures of them so I can use them when planning the layout.

Google Earth may be of help to you :sungum:

A bit of modeller's licence is going to be needed. The line going into the shed has a bit of a curve. However, I will just be doing it on a straight line.

I notice that the rails are embedded into the ground. I thought about how to recreate this and I thought I could use DAS modelling clay or something similar. It would be painted black after though.

I can source the fences from either one of my local model shops but I'm not sure about the crossing gates. I first thought that the gates from Ratio 509 Occupation/ Farm crossing gates would do it but I think they would work as they are too big.

Perhaps I can slightly modify them to fit...

I was scrolling through pictures of the area when I came across this image.

The first thing I noticed was that the fence has wider gaps between the rails and looks different to the previously mentioned fence. I probably won't be able to modify the PECO fence to look like this so I'm going to have to have a think.

I then looked at the aerial view of the same area and saw that there are two fences. The one with the wider gaps starts from the shed up to the first gate. The other fence starts just behind (I think) 75029 and goes up along side the shed. It then turns left and stops before the second gate. It then continues straight on.

Why just model the single lane shed? With a bit more track and a few points you could model an entire MPD inspired by the Grosmont MPD, and probably not need much more space?

I'm also doing the sidings behind it. The plan is to have the three tracks operational with some shunting going on between loco movements.

Ahh I see, that’s fair.

There could be a lot of operational potential if you use ‘modeller’s licence’ a little bit. Have the tunnel from the station as the scenic break, with 3/4 sidings modelled as described, and maybe also include the coaling/watering towers if you don’t want to include the main shed. Wouldn’t be strictly as it is in real life but provides operational interest.

The board isn't wide enough or long enough for me to do the whole TMD. It's only 2 R601s (Hornby double straight) long and about one and a half R600s (Hornby standard straight) wide.

Went to club again last night and worked on the layout. Turns out the board is smaller than I thought it was...

I've only got room (length wise) for 1 R601, 1 R600 and 2 R610s, however I can fit all three tracks on the board.

I started off by measuring up how much backscene board I needed to cut off for the end and back of the scenic section. Pictured below is the end.

Sadly, I wasn't able to take anymore photos of my progress as my phone decided to die but I can confirm that the backscene board is screwed on and the track glued.

I've been thinking about how to recreate the track. It's covered in what looks like coal and ash. I thought about using DAS modelling clay or polyfiller then painting it black. I've also considered getting the real stuff from Grosmont, (when the NYMR reopens), breaking it up and gluing it onto the layout. I could even use the modelling clay and put a thin layer of the real coal on top.

What is the best way to do this?

Update: I have received some DAS modelling clay from my Grandad. I'm looking forward to putting it into the layout.

DAS modelling clay the possibilities are endless. Great stuff to work with.

I'm going to purchase 75029 near the end of next month. This is because I've not got the layout finished yet and it would be ideal to finish it (not including the backscene: can't deal with that yet) before buying locomotives, rolling stock and other pieces.

I went to Cropper's models after work to pick up some more bits and pieces.

I found this Dapol fences and gates kit and the fence looks really similar to the one in Grosmont. I thought it was a close match so I got it.

I also brought 3 more R601s to finish off the two other tracks. I've also noticed that I haven't covered the other three R601s I bought but I got them the same day I got the straights, fence and buffer stops.

Finally, I got this JCB Loadall. Grosmont MPD does have one which is used for filling up the coal tower and other tasks. I'm unsure if it'll fit on the layout but I'm sure I'll find space for it.

As mentioned before, the JCB Loadall is normally is used for filling up the coal tower. I don't know if it ventures far from the area where it's used (I know it also works in the engine sheds and lifts stuff) but I'm going to use a bit of modeller's licence and have it near the sidings doing some lifting.

Here it is outside the coal tower next to then resident Gresley A4 4-6-2 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley.
