You can tell the 1400 class by just looking at the hood (bonnet), pure class 20.

To confuse matters, the track maintenance company Somafel has applied new numbers in the 1400 series to other second-hand locomotives acquired from CP.  In most instances, mercifully, the original CP light panel numbers are still present.

Thus you can see that the photo of the Somafel Alco loco has the former CP number (1511) visible on both the long and short hoods, but also the number "1420" (much smaller, trust me!) on the cab side.  The same applies to ex-CP 1525 (as "1417"), as well as some locos from the CP 1200 series (1206 as 1415, 1219 as 1416 and 1210 as 1423).  Other Somafel acquisitions from the 1200 series, 1400 series and 1550 series appear not to have been renumbered.

Good moaning from a rather damp and dreary looking Charente.  No posting yesterday as there were site problems.  However the tardis is still in sunny Portugal but it's now 10th July and I'm back at Loule.  The yard was still handling general freight and two 1400's had brought in a trainload of building materials. 1428 was rather spoilt by the graffiti.

P7106304_resize.JPG.3a806a366d80ac9103dfc70e7ad5baa3.JPG

It's classmate hadn't been tagged though.

P7106305_resize.JPG.3b51ad09e194d1444e6d9ed5d2c4da7f.JPG

Meanwhile the container crane was working away as usual transferring fuel tanks.

P7106306_resize.JPG.c306d6f1bb6a5403e8ad66876eadc31e.JPG

4726 was on what I think was an engineers train when it was passed by a DMU.

P7106309_resize.JPG.19482eca86acfdaaac58e47f84407565.JPG

3 days later 1462 was in the yard.

P7136326_resize.JPG.5f6496718f8d12f4ef21f890358282c3.JPG

And 4725 was in the station area as well.

P7136328_resize.JPG.cef03eaaa7eec465458a7f2306c6ccd8.JPG

Siemens obviously wanted their identity to remain.

All being well with the forum I will be posting some more tomorrow.

I've started reloading my lost photos and pages 4,5 and 6 of this thread have been done.  I'm now working forward from page 1 when time allows.

Some number typos I’m afraid. In the first two photos it’s 1428. 1429 has been a rolling stock shunting device at Santa Appolonia for some years now. And the red 4700 is 4725 not 1425.

Great to see some Portuguese railway photos. I live here but never take any…

An early good morning from a wet and windy Charente. Nature's alarm clock got me up early so I might as well upload some photos.  The tardis is still in the Algarve area at Loule on 13th July 2010. Next a DMU came in with a service from Lagos to Faro. I had been given a pass out to try and ride a train to Villa Real on the Spanish border.

P7136334_resize.JPG.7065a8fe8f8ae8939767b3d2422a2c5c.JPG

I changed at Faro and waited.  There was a bit of chaos de to a trike but lots of the old DMU's of the 600 class.

P7136336_resize.JPG.fa74846797ef91f33d0e2bb727cf6bbd.JPG

There was also this tack machine.

P7136345_resize.JPG.1adbaffdddef8fb88f1dc1aa255aa098.JPG

I only got as far as the next station east before having to double back but did get back to Loule where a Pendular was coming in.

P7136349_resize.JPG.1a82734c332af8020b9f16d3a899350b.JPG

When that had cleared it was good to see 4714 and a 2600.

P7136351_resize.JPG.21b8aa758e92dee221c32ec8997f66bc.JPG

Here a better photo of 2602.P7136352_resize.JPG.8dd3f469acc67d624468d4dbd671d8b6.JPG

That's it for 2010 folks.  By the magic of the tardis we leap forward to 2014 next time.

Good moaning from a wet and windy place.  However it was still nice and sunny in Portugal the magic of the tardis has brought us forward to 2014.  It's the 19th September and I am on another Alpha Pendualr heading north from Loule towards Lisbon and Entracomento. At one point in the hills I thought that someone from the Midland railway must have left a corrugated iron lamproom around.  Exactly the same as the one I modelled for Long Preston.  My prototype is still in use at Settle Junction.

P9191759_resize.JPG.31a25fc8e6b944e713549f77f4b23f13.JPG I had an interesting time looking out of the window as the guy in the seat in front of me kept putting the blind down.  I kept putting it back up.  He gave up after and hour.  Anyway we crossed the tagus bridge with the usual view of the enourmous statue.

P9191761_resize.JPG.27ae1df24d15051d81df331bda07666a.JPG

Then got a view of one of the suburban lines as we crossed it.

P9191764_resize.JPG.d7e0e3f93721a911989fb6ff6b3cb934.JPG

And a view back towards the bridge as we went down the ramp.

P9191767_resize.JPG.cfc3c0b2a4312d888d6240e464c22242.JPG

Oriente station was it's usual impressive place complete with loco hauled trains.

P9191768_resize.JPG.ab486449deb262065d376f71a30e4efe.JPG

And an endless flow of EMU's.  Here an Alstom built 2240 class.

P9191769_resize.JPG.1553b3226a6331dac2c5c3451110e87f.JPG

As an aside, all my previous photos on this thread have now been reloaded apart from the ones in quotes. I've done some my UK ones and most of the ones from my Limoges thread.

You are looking down on the Cais do Sodre - Cascais line and Alcantara Mar station with the train in the Lisbon bound platform. The single track going off to the left is the connection to the rest of the Portuguese railway network and involves running on and alongside the street to Alcantara Terra station. On the extreme right you can see a curve of track in the grass. This track goes from the sidings alongside the Cascais line into Alcantara docks and is used by container trains. The line from Alcantara Terra and into the docks is not electrified so container trains are hauled by 1400 class locos, with the change from/to electric locos normally taking place at Alcantara Terra.

Thanks for that. I couldn't remember the name of the line but we will see more if it in due course.

Good evening from a peaceful, and just, still sunny house in the Charente.  In tardis land though it's still the 9th September 2014 and we are in Lisbon at Oriente station as a 3500 unit comes in from the south.

P9191770_resize.JPG.ccf6a4b971534c843f59d81d3bd3788e.JPG

I think that I caught that down to Santa Apalonnia station where  1415 was sitting,  Rather heaviy weathered.

P9191771_resize.JPG.565791b4ba371a6f5719d59fc0c07a32.JPG

3527 was at the platform end.

P9191774_resize.JPG.90993258c8ce364777118a4ffb57d300.JPG

This was the view back down the station.

P9191775_resize.JPG.ee76c1b0f79a037895c58bfb8972d960.JPG

Another view of 1415.  I do like the 1400's,

P9191777_resize.JPG.d4c43e1f0d6dd6ce7e0b8dd6e8aa6626.JPG

2257 was also there.

Good moaning from a sunny but still cool Charente.   The tardis though is still in Lisbon on 19th September 2014. From Santa Apallonia I headed north to Entroncamento.  This rather nice old coaling crane caught my eye as we arrived.

P9191781_resize.JPG.30034a13453c7960b5d981fdc1d2c926.JPG

Other stock was around including the class 50

P9191782_resize.JPG.05b7a87bf1b18593e260ed0699f0662a.JPG

This DMU was in the platform.

P9191783_resize.JPG.1627e36a90104cd2272977ce98af6f3c.JPG

The museum looked good but I wasn't staying long enough to do it justice.

P9191784_resize.JPG.0a582e064a68f502d283f316de44feae.JPG

Plenty of steam around.

P9191785_resize.JPG.56ecbddb48509c3aa2c91be96834e8f5.JPG

And even more.

P9191786_resize.JPG.5149c6f360b6f595ae0305c59279767e.JPG

More tomorrow hopefully.  Off to see real trains in the Bordeaux are now.

The Stothert & Pitt steam coaling crane is still there - and probably in the same place where you photographed it.  It's part of an unrestored "collection" beyond the boundary fence of the museum, which also includes SACM/Graffenstaden 0-6-0 no. 167 - visible behind and to the left of the luggage van (51 94 92-29 001-9, of 1960) in the same picture.

is that a Rolls Royce Sentinel i spy in the roundhouse?

Yes and no.  It looks like CP 1154, which is kept operational for moving stock around the museum site.  (Sister CP 1184 is on display in the former workshops).  Either way, these were built under licence by Sorefame (to an obvious Sentinel design) and fitted with Rolls Royce engines.

Thanks Eddie for identifying the shunter.  I have it noted in my book as having been seen there in 2010.  Anyway good moaning from the Charente.   The tardis though is still in Entoncamento and by some miracle it's still the 19th September 2014. This older shunter was outside the museum. A GE product.

P9191787_resize.JPG.0969cbb9a312172c896bdfdd6037ecc8.JPG

And what looks like another preserved diesel.

P9191788_resize.JPG.7652a195e0e80561a47635c0bcf47246.JPG

A glimpse of a tasty rivetted electric i think.

P9191790_resize.JPG.f022cbf4c71769f5a2ceef28f20c30a1.JPG

It was nearly time to head back but this Alpha Pendular was heading north.

P9191791_resize.JPG.56167e7948eeab38e0a3269311bc9b30.JPG

And my train came in behind 5619.

P9191793_resize.JPG.2fef8ced0e0abfef7ed248b3f358b979.JPG

As we passed the shops these DMU's were outside the works.

That "diesel" in the second photo has a pantograph.....

It's actually Estoril line electric Loco L301.  My old Metro European fleetbook says it was built by North British/GEC in 1948, though it's stated as 1950 and GEC/AEG on a CP museum website!

The green electric in the roundhouse is another Estoril loco (L302)- originally AEG built in 1924

Yes, I have Estoril L-301 as NBL 26683/1950.  The loco carries combined GEC/NBL plates (which can be seen as the red splash on the front), but without works numbers or dates.  The yellow vehicle behind it is a Matisa draisine, PV 630.

There's some question over the AEG works numbers for the two other Estoril electric locos (L-303 is also at the museum), some sources give the alternative date of 1926.

The green/cream DMU's are single railcars (0351 series), extensively rebuilt from Allan railcars (0301 series) introduced in 1954.  Only two or three remain in service, working out of Entrocamento.

Good moaning from the Charente.  The tardis is still in Portugal on the 19th September 2014. I was onboard my train heading south from Entroncamento past the works. This 2600 was there.

P9191796_resize.JPG.48d7282c3b108bccc365df7cda38f49a.JPG

with several class mates.

P9191798_resize.JPG.7dfd78093758353677c643dff2c35f3f.JPG

An 1800 (Class 50) was poking out.

P9191804_resize.JPG.7f6a4036a867d15b6220db1e6421958a.JPG

And a lst shot of the long line of 2600's.

P9191805_resize.JPG.ccb4e91eecf771c5586b9dddd0af8165.JPG

Then it was down into Lisbon.  I managed to persuade a ticket clerk to sell me a rarely advertised railrover for the Lisbon suburban network. I don't speak much Portugese so i was quite proud of that achievement.  Then across town to the terminus of the Cascais line where the stock was all new to me.

Two styles of it were evident.

I've only ever been to Lisbon once, back in 1990, but the stock running on the Cascais line at that time was originally built by Cravens in Sheffield during the 1950's....

Seems that two of the sets were preserved when they were withdrawn in the early 2000's but they have since been scrapped....

Good moaning from the Charente where it's a bit cloudy.  However it was still sunny on Lisbon on 19th September 2014 where the tardis was. From the terminus, I took the Cascais line for , IIRC, 1 station to where it looked possible to walk to the Alcantara Terra station.   The subways in the station tht I got off at had some lovely muriels.

P9191810_resize.JPG.b15ed8651db4bddeb59f2e39c5ecbb49.JPG

These stretched for for several hundred metres and made the long passageways look rather nice.  No evidence of Graffiti either.

P9191812_resize.JPG.f488e6803837b3cbb9dfc452e7825e8c.JPG

Then up one road that had these lovely oldish looking trams on it.

P9191814_resize.JPG.baa2eba98513817437925f736cbddc17.JPG

And quite a good service.

P9191816_resize.JPG.033777974e64f4eafa0664f7e6e04814.JPG

And up to Alcantara Terra where this rather good looking loco was waiting at the exit from the goods yard.

P9191817_resize.JPG.b22b2556e5f4fa5e493997f1c6665ef7.JPG

Suddenly it powered up and set off when there was a gap in the traffic was the lights changed.

P9191819_resize.JPG.105f0f06809ff63e6c08da05cee988dd.JPG

Not everybody took notice of the lights and I was able to see that it had a container train behind it.

Good morning from the Charente.  The tardis is till in Lisbon and it's still 19th September 2014. The1400 is accelerating well as it heads across the road,

P9191821_resize.JPG.a2c642e0d92e47b2326ec1aef0706a38.JPG

The younf lady in the hatchback also tried to accelerate then thought better of it and had to brake rather hard.

P9191822_resize.JPG.6f75d58f98531b166966ee8f11d3b773.JPG

As mentioned previously this is the link to the container terminal and heads off alongside the road I'd walked up towards the docks.

P9191826_resize.JPG.485cbea5ee21bf4b3af41fcbb04be313.JPG

An impressive sight.

P9191827_resize.JPG.b1cb8e6f7770138ada07d7b98b123074.JPG

Then into Alcantara Terra to get my next train.

P9191828_resize.JPG.ded89fcc2f86827b9977208a9ab6ea64.JPG

This line climbs steeply to join the main line round the city but before the junction passes under this very impressive aqueduct.
