Bachmann Class 24 - Factory Fitted Sound Decoder

Hello,

I've had a Bachmann sound fitted class 24 for some considerable time. Catalogue number 32-425DS.

I'm making modifications to remove the water tank and while I've got it in bits I thought I would fit a decent speaker.

It has a 21 pin sound decoder fitted with the usual oval speaker and inadequate speaker housing. The speaker itself is rated 100 ohms.

Am I correct in my understanding that a 100 ohm speaker is suitable for a version 3.5 decoder and that version 4 should have either 4 ohm or 8 ohm?

If that's correct can anyone educate me about the time line for decoders. I thought 21 pin decoders were introduced at or after version 4 decoders became available so I had always assumed that if it's a 21 pin then it must be version 4 or younger.

Dare I fit a 4 ohm speaker or will the decoder amplifier go supernova?

Thanks,

Bob

Thanks Charlie,

Looks like I'll be troubling you for something decent to replace this one.
