RMweb Premium - No Google Ads

Message added by AY Mod,

If you are still seeing Google ads or pop-up videos after registering for Premium please do make sure you have followed Steps 1-4 in the first post - https://www.rmweb.co.uk/topic/171928-rmweb-premium-no-google-ads/

If it were that might explain why they have finally given in to Andy Y's consistent nagging over the issue

TBH it was more technical handicaps being the protracted delay rather than trying to push folk towards the dearer option, the existing Gold option was all we'd got to give a solution for those not wanting the ads (which were commercially necessary).

12 quid = no brainer

I did it despite running ad blockers, I wanted this as soon as the original pay thing was launched

No, as the 'premium' theme isn't an available option:-

Thanks for taking time to reply but our glorious leader has sorted it out for me.

via another domain, RMweb.uk - Malwarebytes may find the linking of different domains suspicious.

They will do - that's an immediate red flag to any security system, as it's a very common practice for malicious actors to have scripts hosted on sites that are similar to, but not quite the same as, the target site.

I used to have RMWeb without adblockers but once the ads got so intrusive they were interfering with the website layout I decided the time had arrived to turn them on.

I willingly paid my £12 and immediately turned them off again.

Hello Andy and crew,

Are there currently any issues with the payment function? I tried obtaining the subscription several times now and using both PayPal and credit card, but am receiving only error messages. I can make payments without problems elsewhere, so it seems to be specific to WOR.

Thanks to all and cheers!

Thanks for bringing this premium in, Andy, I must say that RMweb hasn’t been a pleasant experience for the last eight months or so. Seeing an uncluttered screen and getting a faster response speed is much better, well worth paying out for, that bloody “Connectix” was driving me daft. It looks like there’s just “activities” to sort, and hopefully all the old pictures will return eventually. Cheers, Bob.

I can see on the system that you have had several attempts although it doesn't tell me anything useful I can advise you with. I'll try to get more information on Monday but if you do try again can you grab a screen shot with any information when it fails and send it via PM to me.

It can't just be the overseas aspect as a number have succeeded.

I've just purchased Premium, done the account linking, logged out, cleared my browser history completely, and logged back in, and I'm still showing as 'normal'. I'm anything but normal though... 😉

Edit: but this post suddenly now shows me as Premium once posted...

Edit2: Now I've lost the top menu bar entry for my activity, so I can't select from my preset searches...

Have you selected the Premium theme now and free of Google ads?

Yep. I've even just logged out, cleared history, then logged back in to see whether the setting was cookie or server-side based. It's logged me in as Premium with the Premium theme, so it looks like it's server-side. Still can't see my activity options.

As previously mentioned that's a separate theme issue which I'll be back onto on Monday.

I can give it another try later. I even tried going via mobile access through my iPad rather than wi-fi in case my router filtered out anything important but that didn’t help either.

In any case, thanks in advance. Much appreciated!

Apologies, I haven't read through the thread in detail so didn't know it was already known about.

Edit: what's interesting is up until I bought the Premium and made the link to WoR this morning, the 'Activity' tab was still available in the default theme. Now that I have Premium and made the link, it doesn't matter if I'm on Premium or Default theme, the Activity tab isn't there.

Edit2: regarding advertising revenue, I listened to part of this programme https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3ct41wf the other day, and it gave the impression that internet advertising is getting a lot of false clicks from bots, I think 80% or more. Many large businesses have pulled out of using it, or at least diminished their use of it due to the fraudulent use of bots to make it look like adverts are getting clicks.

How do they know the bots aren't buying? Doesn't your computer have all the latest kit, and hasn't a hole appeared in your bank account?

I get reports each week and look at the performance and consistency of our trade ads to ensure they are within expected ranges and also to see what users react to.

The only adverts on ANY forum I have ever clicked on have been directly associated to that forum. By paying £12 I am helping to fund the forum and do not have to feel at all guilty about running uBlock Origin to knock out other ads. (Did allow those banners as they sometimes offer nice stuff)

And yes I have bought due to forum ads before so those banners you see have a lot more effect than random ones.

I think you will find there are many people like me willing to chip in a small amount to keep the forum going, Done it before with another which had a no advert rule.

If a couple of thousand of us chuck in our £12 that is a substantial part of a persons wages.

And we are not funding the admongers.

(Someone happy to pay their TV licence and Amazon Prime rather than watch ITV)

I have a new one, switched to Premium layout and the activity thingy has gone. Check phone, the same.

After shouting at the software for a couple of hours I may have sorted this for desktop and landscape tablet forms.

For mobile and portrait tablet forms there's a temporary fix with a 'Basic' theme available from the Themes drop-down list at the foot of every page. This shows the hamburger menu icon at the top right.

I wish more websites did this. I abhor all forms of marketing and would willingly pay to access content without it.

I read this novel over thirty years ago when I was a teenager and I have never forgotten it.

The word you're looking for is prophetic. :(

One more happy user. So far, so good; I found it a simple enough process (for a not particularly tech orientated person) and things look like they have updated OK.

Thank you to Andy for giving us this option.

I can confirm it's working now for me, Activity tab is back on desktop Firefox+Linux 🙂

I think the issue was to do with the mass Google-type advertising, and likely mostly on top 10 or top 100 sites. I doubt any specialist site or forum would be likely to suffer from such 'bot fraud', and even less so trade-specific adverts.

The bots don't use general user PCs unless they've been infected with malware. If none of those are 'available', they'll likely be using dedicated machines somewhere, perhaps banks of private VMs sitting on private virtual servers, probably hidden so deep in the ecosystems of the major providers like Amazon/Google/Microsoft that even those companies aren't aware of them.
