Phil - many thanks for these - I'm especially fond of the Highbridge shots especially the Royal Mail apparatus.

Very fond memories as a child spent there - long before my interest in railways developed.

Neil - I was pleased to be able to round up so many of Dad's photos. A word of caution - if you want to download any of the photos you are welcome to do so. I say this as the ipernity site seems to be going through a rather uncertain time, so you could find that these links go down without warning.

We lived in Highbridge in the 1960s and early 70s. I can't remember which website it was, but there was an extensive correspondence arising out of someone spotting the mail train photo. A model of Highbridge was being built over a number of years and the modeller hadn't realised that there was a mail pick-up at that location. It was then discovered that at some point there had also been one on the down line, although no-one could work out where it was positioned. The discussion then got into massive detail over the mail trains' make up over the years and their routes etc. etc..

I was interested in railways when we lived there. Dad and I had a joint SDJR & GW layout based on Mendip, where we had previously lived. Some of my stock, photos and drawings can be found in the SDJR group's pages here.

Best wishes for 2016

Thanks Phil,

I'm sure then either you or your father had known some of my relatives who lived in Highbridge and were active in the Church around that time. Both maternal great grandfathers were S&D engine drivers and my grandfather did an apprenticeship at Highbridge works. I had two great aunts living in Walrow and other family members in the close vicinity. I can only vaguely remember milk trains going up the old S&D branch to Bason bridge, but well remember the pairs of class 37s working the M5 construction traffic.

I'd Iove to model the station site one day, a great railway history.

Neil

Hi Nidge,

Interesting collection of shots there,I like to see pictures taken from the footbridge at Southall,where I spent a lot of time as a lad...Is that maybe a failed Warship being removed from a train?

Main line loco's were not uncommon visitors to the depot at Southall,although on one Saturday afternoon back in October 1971 I was really surprised when 831 Monarch arrived on shed,only Warship I saw on the depot.

More pictures please!

Yes Neil, the poor old Warship is being removed from the train behind it on the Down Main, and my guess is that the Hymek on the Up Main will shunt across to replace it. Have a few more from ex-Old Oak man Scott to post, will sort them out later mate.

Resurrecting a long quiet thread, on 27th September 2022 an arranged visit to Kidderminster Diesel Depot on the Severn Valley Railway produced the following;

* This locomotive is in fact D1062 Western Courier, but was renamed and renumbered by its owners, the Western Locomotive Association, earlier this year to mark the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee.

I feel compelled to 'fill the gap'! D1014 Western Leviathan backs the empty stock from the down 'CRE' out of Penzance station in early April 1969 (using the Kodak Instamatic camera I'd only had since the previous Christmas). I've read somewhere that D1014 could have been the Golden Ochre-liveried one, but maybe 'Champion' sounded better than 'Leviathan'!
