That's because most of the rest ended up in North Africa; all the taxis that aren't Mercedes are Peugeots of varying vintage. We stayed on the edge of the Atlas mountains a few years ago, and there'd be a stream of taxis heading into the outskirts of the Sahara all day; each would have six or more passengers and a luggage rack about the same volume as the car..

Lots of 504s have left Australia in recent years to support the taxi industry in Egypt.

What about as a proportion of the 1970 figure then for a better (from my perspective) comparison.  Certainly here in Australia we are far more likely to see a 404 on the road today than a BMC version of the design and I suspect that the BMC version outsold the 404.  And the 404 is available in H0 scale which suits me better, still would like more Pommy cars in H0 though, people who bought French cars were considered very strange by most Australians and I don't want strange people on my layout.

EDIT: I just Googled the 404 - and I confess I don't remember ever having seen one in the UK.  504s seemed to be fairly long-lived though.

I do remember seeing those, but they were so similar to the BMC 1500/1600 Farinas that it would be easy to overlook them (the big Austin Westminster and Wolseley 6/110 also looked much the same). I think the original big-fin BMC 1500 version came first, but not by long. Pininfarina toned the fins down for the Peugeot 404 and the revised BMC 1600.

Banger racing in the '70s must have wiped out a lot of the BMC Farinas; they were hefty old lumps!

Pictures are now on Facebook pages, one shows the RAF Commer Commando and it is the coach version not the 70's/80's truck. Would have been nice if it was the truck version as they were used by BR, GOP and Post Office.

Although the truck is referred to as a Commando strictly speaking the name only applies to the PSV chassis. A moot point anyway as the only differences was the axle ratio and spring rate. (The lorry was officially the Q4).

We believe that we know the manufacturing difficulties overseas, and there is often a Forum member with "unofficial" inside information, but the delays drag on with very little "official" news/press release to explain the extended delays or to improve credibility. I feel that my brand loyalty is being taken for granted, and I have now voted "No".

I see your point Peter. At least Oxford Diecast's MD involves himself directly with the specialist Facebook group referenced above, and posts photos of pre-production and finished models. Yesterday he also talked about tooling costs, and lead times. The programme above is for 2014 release if I read it correctly, and as far as I can calculate OD is catching up steadily on its backlog but you can always expect to have around 150 -250 items announced but not delivered, with about 25 new items released on average each month. The public announcement date for the list above is around 25 October when the next catalogue is released. All of this info is from the Oxford Diecast Collectors Facebook page

I understand your frustration Peter, however virtually all of what is listed by Oxford does turn up eventually and I do think they have been making great efforts to catch up, ok so there might be one or two from 2010/11 releases that have yet to turn up but on the whole my impression is they are getting better on delivery times and them being a little slow at times does help spread the cost a little bit!

 

I also find the delays a little frustating although it is a nice surprise when they do arrive!

I will get the Queen Mary (and I hope they do it with Bedford S Type and AEC prime movers as well, can we hope for a Commer Q2 as well?) even though I have a couple of airfix examples. There is a scrap yard near to me that used to have some piled up by the fence, they may even still be there under all the vegetation but its difficult to see at the moment!!

A photograph has appeared on another forum sight of a QM trailer being used as a footbridge over a stream, the only modification is the removal of the goose-neck, it still retains its wheels and tyres.
