still trying to decide what to do about the buildings lights, would like them to work but going to be difficult because all the buildings are fix on the layout, i think it will cause to much damage trying to get access for the wiring, probably go with non working lights, maybe a few working yard lamps will do.

trouble is when i planned the layout i had not thought about adding lights if i had the wires could have been fix before the buildlings

pete

here at helm when the shed supervisor (swmbo) say its shutting it shuts

also i'm running out of photo's,i might be able to sneak a half -day to take some more over the chtistmas break

thats if you all want me to???

You could run any externally wall mounted lights wiring on the outside of the buildings as the wire could represent electrical conduit.

Internal lights cold be mounted inside a piece of tube or square hollow section styren then a hols drilled from under the baseboard and this section fed up through the hole to the height the lights are required.

Certainly - the Organiser, Northpoint of this Parish.... a.k.a. Nick Palette.

I already took the liberty of contacting him about this layout - be assured this thread has not been missed..!! ;)

P.S. Looks like I'm going to have to make the trip to Worcester in March... Kidderminster was so much closer..!! :scratchhead:

Edit: Jack beat me to it.... probably whilst my post was taking soooooooooooooooo long to load up...!!!! <_<

  • 2 weeks later...

Seasons greetings

I've started making some lights for helm out of plastic tube and brass wire will take some photo's when i get some fitted to the buildings

It will probably be in the new year if i don't get to much to drink,my sons just tapped a barrel of Ennerdale Blonde in our cellar, yummy! and it will be a shame not to sample a couple (don't want it to go to waste,do i)

all the best for the new year

Very nicely done ...the night time shots are most atmospheric .....

good bit of detail ...using the wires as conduits ...then remembering they need clips to the building siding and doing the excellent touch of weathering from each fixing......very well observed ... :clapping_mini:

Regards Trevor.... :sungum:

I think that looks very good indeed !

Don't they just?!?! They've really added something to the layout!

I do always think that lights on locos, especially these days with DCC constant lighting, can tend to show up the lack of lights elsewhere. I don't know if it's because I work nights too, but if you really look around at night, it's amazing just how many lights there are......

Also amazing, if you get into an area where there aren't any artificial lights, just HOW MANY stars there are = light pollution really does rob us of some natural wonders, Not the one I was looking for which was shot in Ozland but this is an example - it is a bit like this here at the moment

I rather like the music too.

how i built the lights for helm

post-13979-0-73396500-1325544000_thumb.jpg

first i used a 3/16 tube and a 10mm x 6mm rectangle

post-13979-0-41524900-1325544137_thumb.jpg

cut a 45 degree angle

post-13979-0-44705800-1325544192_thumb.jpg

then do a straight cut

post-13979-0-81641600-1325544264_thumb.jpg

then glue it on to the tube

post-13979-0-58988200-1325544308_thumb.jpg

once the glue has set recut the 45 and straight cuts

post-13979-0-06349700-1325544396_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-49072800-1325544566_thumb.jpg

then glue onto a piece of plastic, cut out and tidy up with a file

post-13979-0-91564400-1325544593_thumb.jpg

then give it a coat of black paint

post-13979-0-84148500-1325544654_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-02389200-1325544690_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-03835500-1325544866_thumb.jpg

use a 3 mm drill from the front to drill out the back, then add 3mm led

post-13979-0-89422900-1325544903_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-91256000-1325544924_thumb.jpg

then bend and cut a 6mm staple and solder to the legs of the led to make the brackets

post-13979-0-13880300-1325545064_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-04943800-1325545083_thumb.jpg

file the led to match the 45 degree then give it another coat of paint

now decied were there are to be fix and plan were to put your cable run keeping everything level and 90 degree corners, for my cables i used 5mm brass wire soldered to the leg of the leds and wired in series + suitable resistor

before i installed them they had a coat of silver paint, once all was dry i fix them to the buildings using peco thin track pins, the brass wire was feed down the buildings through the baseboard and connected up underneath

they scale out at about 30in x18in may be a tad bigger than i wanted but once there on the layout they look ok, just some yard lights to design now, then i can cross that of my "to do list"
