59th AND RUST ( NOW retired 2021)

Recommended Posts

That yard office doesn't look rght - it looks as if it has been dropped in from a far more rural area. I would expect plywood or sheet metal rather than planks, and I wouldn't expect a porch as you aren't stepping out onto a dirt surface.

Another nitpick: The "pit privy" (aka outhouse) screams rural backwoods. Dig a hole in the ground, and when its too full, you dig a new hole, move the privy, filling the old hole with the dirt from the new one. Its hard to dig holes in cement/cobblestones. IMHO it doesn't belong there at all. There would be a sewer connection in the building, or there would be a bathroom in one of the larger bathrooms.

Love this layout! Looks really great!

I know what you mean about the privy, but i wanted it on the front of the layout as a talking point for the kids at exhibition they love thing naughty, and another reason, it's glued on,also gotta have something for fred and barney to do when the sewer gets blocked!!!!

"why's it always us when the sewers blocked"

Progress has really slowed up,running out of crates etc, hasn't helped, seemed to have hit one of those lulls, were my get up and goes, gone, maybe i need a bit of time away from the models, you get these lulls now and then.

Think the answer is beer, this always give me fresh impetus, plus it's a excuse to drink more beer

he's one last photo of the PC switcher about to drop of a gon at the team track

I know the feeling. Yesterday was meant to be a big push on one of the layouts but ended up just doing various bits to stock for a different layout. No beer as I had plenty Friday night and Saturday all day!

Will certainly be a beer orientated weekend this one coming up aswell...I hope they have stocked up in Liverpool...Thomas Rigby, Ship & Mitre etc. here we come!

Didn't notice that when i took the photo,it's surprising what you see when you take closeup photo's,anyway's it's suppose to be good luck when you get c***ed on isn't!!,(maybe "Rusty Ray's" luck will change for the better),it's not quite as noticeable from a little bit further back.

As you can see in the photo, i've started to put my freight cars through the works and weather them, using acrylic paints in the form of washes and dry brushing, then a dusting of ground up pastels on the bogies and along the bottoms of the cars, this will keep me going for a while, till i get my detailing stuff to go on the layout.

This illustrates one of the hazards of weathering. I am not talking about the weathering job itself which is well done, but how much its weathered..

That's a PC boxcar. The PC lasted from 1968 to 1976. If the HH660 is switching, then than PC boxcar's paint would be brand new out of the paint shop. It would be the shiniest thing on the layout. If the PC engine is switching that means the paint job is less than 10 years old.

Not every rail car is incredibly decrepit. At some point all railcars were bright and shiny. That can actually be used to reinforce the era of the layout. For example, leaving the PC with minimal weathering (road dust along the lower part of the car) and then more heavily weathering the NYC green car would establish the PC car is "newer" than the NYC. On the other hand if the era of the layout is the late 1970's through the 1980's, the heavily weathered PC car would fit in nicely.

Sorry to be picky but I grew up in the Philadelphia area in the 1960's and 1970's.

A weathering tip on dark colored hood units. You will find a "shiny" band of paint on engines between 3 and 5 feet above the walkways, feathered into the overall weathering. That's where the shoulders and sleeves of the crews walking along the sides of the engines brush away the dust on the hood. Its most noticeable on dark engines. Look for it. Once you know its there it becomes as obvious as the bow wave on a road unit. I don't model diesels now, but figure the way to model that is to put a roll/tube of tape about 4 ft above the walkway and then weather with an air brush. That should give a shiny stripe with feathered edges.

Dave

The PC boxcar in the photo was in bad nick when i got it,so gave it a heavier coat than it really needed,it will be mainly used when i run the layout as Conrail, most of the other stuff will just be given a blacky/brown wash and as you said a bit of weathering along the bottom edges, with the odd spot of rust here and there

.

Thanks about the tip on the diesels, only done the H10-44 so far, should be able to sort it with a wet cotton bud it's only acrylic paint.

Please don't apologise Dave; as you know there are many of us in the UK that model US outline, but to 'get it right' you sometimes need some local knowledge, and being 5,000-odd miles away from one's favourite Railroad*, that can sometimes be quite hard!!

This is where the Internet and Forums like this have really opened up the hobby - to be able to get first-hand info like your's, such as the 'clean bit' on diesel hoods, is just invaluable. :)

* Edit - Never mind however many years too late, if it's a Fallen Flag!!

Weathered a few more box cars this week, all the 40 footers are Athearn BB, the 50 footer is a Accurail, only another 30 to go!!.There not up to the standards of the newer stuff that's coming out now,but think they will stand up better to all the handling there going to get on and off the layout, when you stand back to where the punters would be at a exhibition ( 3') they look the part.

While getting the rest of the stock out of my storage box, i came across this box car has anyone got any info on it,i think the livery is 1950's,would it have lasted into the late 60's,or been rebuilt/painted.

Hi Ray,

It may well be representative of the 1943 demonstrator that's referred to on Wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timken_Roller_Bearing_Company but I couldn't find any pictures. The model will need new (roller bearing) trucks if it is, along with a coat of gloss varnish and a load of "suits" looking it over!

Started to put some trackside cluter on today, seeing i finished work early, this is slow work, as you can see in the picture, nature is starting to take over again,it still needs some rust old metal bits and cardboard boxes, going to try and make some boxes tonight.

Looking very good.

I fully understand why you are using the older models as many of my newer fine scale ones have lost the stirrup steps and separate grab rails with all the handling at shows, more so than any of the modern image cars.

The stirrup steps have been replaced with metal ones but the missing grab rails are still missing until I can find some more to match. Had a few missing brake wheels but luckily found a few spare.

The big thing is like what Shortliner said,i've used Peco code 100 track (thats what i had spare ) for the layout,it's built on a budget of zero!! and working from that, that why i tried card and brick paper for the buildings,it seems to have worked ok so far, will have to dip into my pocket for some of the detailing bits, but so far i've kept with in my budget.

Added a lot more cluter this morning, made some cardboard boxes, starting to look more like a rundown railroad now, what do you think??,needs some more tyres, shopping trollies, and maybe i'll try making a bust sofa and chair.
