Prof Klyzlr
Dear Ray, for the "modern era", you'll be looking for a 50' or longer "general duty" tankcar with petro-chemical piping and valve systems, This may help... http://chemresponsetool.noaa.gov/Containers_guide/Railcar.htm Happy Modelling, Aim to Improve, Prof Klyzlr i need a fuel tank car for helm what did they use in the early 90's? was there one 50ft or smaller Ray

dave1905
Are looking for a car to haul fuel for Helm (the plant) or a car to haul diesel fuel for the locomotives repaired at Helm? It probably doesn't matter since both would be about the same type of car. Search for pix of UP fuel cars, I'll might have some around somewhere, they were older tank cars (therefore shorter). That would at least give you the correct type for a shorter length, the era would just be off a bit. The cars serving HLEM would be private owner cars, not railroad owned fuel cars (most of the major railroads own or formerly owned a handful of tank cars for fuel distribution). Newer CSX car: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=336530 Newer IAIS car: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1697952 Longer MKT car: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1014732 Older NS car: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=652406 Older UP car: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=170092 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=404271 I think there were models of cars similar to this, but they are water cars and not fuel: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1257603
Jez
Athearn's RTR 20'900 Gallon tank car has several Railroad liveries used for fuel delivery - http://www.athearn.com/Search/Default.aspx?SearchTerm=20%2c900+tank+RTR&CatID=THRF&Page=3 Although showing 'sold out' at Athearn, several are still available on ebay.com if you are willing to pay the shipping from across the pond. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=20%2C900&_sacat=19130&_sop=10&_dmpt=Model_RR_Trains&_odkw=&_osacat=19130&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313 Jez
shortliner
Ray - how about one of the little Atlas ones here? http://www.garethbay.../comment-page-1 Although they were intended for corn syrup, there is no reason why Helm should not have bought one for refuel purposes - the other alternative is to have a local fuel dealer bring in his tank truck for refuelling - done on quite a few roads. This is a UK version http://www.railwayla...efueler_004.jpg Some on ebay.com http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=HO+athearn+beer+can+tank&_sacat=See-All-Categories

shortliner
Ray - perhaps a couple of patches on it for [ HELM YARD ] and [ WORKS YARD USE ONLY ] or [ FUEL USE ONLY ] or similar would do the trick. I have a spare modellers licence if you need one
Jez
Perhaps these pictures will help to give an idea of size for the shorty tank car Jack suggested and the larger 50' 20'900 gallon Athearn fuel tank car: Tank cars are switched out on the fuel point at Harrington. Shorty tank car is discharged into a waiting road vehicle on the Harrington team track. Jez

alastairq
hi........seeing that shorty tank car, reminded me of a conversion I did way back last century, following on from an article spotted in a mag. I had some really cheap, naff tanks [Pemco et al?] the sort usually given away at shows in a job lot [i have some similar Thrall door boxes, as used by the plywood trade].............the type which had truck-mounted couplers? Remember those? Well, I've had a rummage through my boxes of detritus [Jack may be familiar with those?].....pinched some batteries out of a torch, and went and took some piccies...below which came from one of these..[not exactly, but a white-coloured one, an example of which I cannot currently find] Sure, it could do with wire handrails, better ladders, and a better brake wheel..probably better trucks too..time has marched on, hasn't it? But, then as now, I have titewad tendencies...but hey, wire is cheap... Not too sure of the length being ...erm..prototypical....maybe that dimension is open to suggestions? PS..that thing on top of the tank? Not some backwoods method of fly-shunting the vehicle, is it? A rocket motor?
shortliner
Remember them? - I still have some! I'm not familiar with yours, but the name certainly sounds familiar! Boxes of "someday that will be useful" thingies - and " I've had this for years, so it can go out" and just as the bin men drive off you realise that it would have been perfect and ideal for........... Ah yes, I know them well!

shortliner
Perhaps it is a mindset common to model railroaders!

doctor quinn
I recognise the Hershey's tank from a late 80's article in RMC to shorten one into a Hudson's Bay Oil & Gas molten sulphur tank. I've no idea of the prototype for the original model made by Life Like (I think). Modern non pressure tank car builders tend to make all barrels the same diameter and vary the capacity by changing the number of panels and so length, just like Alistair's conversion.
