Bulleid Carriages in BR Blue/Grey Livery

Recommended Posts

Hello All.

Did any of the SR/BR/BRCW build Bulleid designed loco hauled carriages get repainted into blue and grey livery? Or were they all withdrawn before that? I've never seen a picture of one, although I've seen lots of pictures of blue and grey Mk1s in steam hauled trains up to 1967. Any info or pictures would be great!

Cheer,

Rick

Hi Rick

As far as I am aware no Bulled loco hauled coaching stock made it inot Blue and grey. The only Maunsell stock to do so was the mail sorting and stowage vans.

Hi,

Kevin Holland's very interesting article on SR Coach formations in Model Rail this month categorically states that "no SR Maunsell or Bullied coaches received this (Blue and Grey) livery"

Hope this helps

There are is a picture of a maroon Bulleid coach that was transferred to the Eastern & Scottish regions in 1965/6 in "The Southern Way" No.15 - these Bulleids were intended as replacement for Mk.1 stock selected for conversion as part of the new electric/trailer units for the Bournemouth electrification. No pictures, though, of any blue & grey Bulleids......

The maroon coach in the picture has a Sc prefixed number......maybe limited edition for ModelZone/Signal Box to do.....

I believe the explanation is that the end of the summer 1967 timetable saw both the Bournemouth electrification go live and the West of England mainline from Waterloo downgraded to secondary status and singled beyond Salisbury. Hence there was a massive drop in the SW Division's requirement for loco hauled coaching stock and all the Bullied stock was withdrawn en masse .

In short Bullied coaches went along with Bullied Pacifics and Southern steam - and as it was a planned operation, no doubt the Southern avoided repainting any of it into blue /grey in the previous 18 months

No Bulleid loco-hauled coach received blue/grey livery although quite a few EPB and HAP types did. The vehicles transferred away from the Southern to the ER and ScR in exchange for Mk1 coaches were all repainted into lined maroon before transfer. Occasionally pics/film show one in a train on the Southern.

Maunsell coaches receiving blue/grey were the Postal vehicles and two ambulance/saloon cars (used on Lourdes traffic).

Did any of the Bulleid coaches withdrawn after the summer of '67 get into departmental use, and acquire anything other than all over blue there?

In the 1984 Platform 5 departmental book there's only one Bullied coach listed, a former RTO S1457S converted to DS70262, a tunnel inspection staff coach. There's a picture of it in the Ian Allan 'Rolling Stock Recognition:3 Departmental Stock' (published 1984) on page 12. In basic format it looks like a Second Open, though it has a plated over solebar, so it probably started off as one of the 'Bournemouth' vehicles. The lack of them is probably down to the fact that a lot of LSWR/SR Ironclad coaches (and some Maunsells) had been converted for departmental use under the '1960 BTU programme' so they didn't need any more until the 1980s - by then the conversions would were Mk.1 based. Perhaps surprisingly none were used for carflats either.

There was a BTSO S2526S that was taken into department service as 082232, later renumbered to 975375 and was painted blue when 975375.

not my pic (and will happily credit or remove pic upon request from owner)

This particular coach is preserved on the Bluebell. Would make an interesting modelling challenge. And it’s halfway to blue/grey :)
