RAF Kinloss MRC / Halfords Paint List - 2012 Version

Recommended Posts

Aerosols can be good when they are used right, Airbrushes can be good also, but require bit more practice with to get good results, the upside to having an Airbrush is you have a lot more control over the spray, aerosols don't have that sadly, but they have a nice smooth finish that can be achieved as long as youre not too heavy with the coat

I can only second the above comments. Although I do use a airbrush for weathering I try to avoid at all costs enamel paints because A, I don't have a specialist room for modeling (I'm at the kitchen table) & B, because it's messy cleaning the brush afterwards.

I have a woodstore for the log burner in the garden which has a sheet of wood inside for spraying on. Full ventilation is provided by being outdoor & I've always got a gaurenteed quality finish on my models.

Because if the paint is a reasonably close colour match I would rather get a consistently uniform smooth finish, which is pretty much guaranteed with Halfords paint (or Humbrol aerosols for that matter) than mess about for two hours setting up, mixing, cleaning, etc with the airbrush, then doing it all again the next evening to get the second coat on. I've never had a duff finish from a Halfords can, and I would rather have a close colour match than an exact one which either doesn't come out of the nozzle or comes out in lumps (yes Railmatch, I'm talking about you).

I hate airbrushing. I would rather brush paint than airbrush. But that's my personal choice.

Yes, I agree entirely. I own an Iwata airbrush which is excellent but it gets used for the more precise jobs like weathering.

IMHO, the Halfords range of paints is the finest there is, never had a bad finish and lasts to the last drop, never clogging the spray head.

Personally I will not buy Railmatch or Prescision in cans as.

1. They are enamels, far inferior to the industrial acrylics in Halfords range

2. They simply do not work effectively (and I've given them plenty of chances)

Until somebody produces a range of railway colours as good as the Halfords paints I for one am happy to go for the closest match available, after all, as has already been stated, there is no such thing as a uniform colour. Rain, sun, smoke etc saw to that.

Could anyone suggest a alternative to Halfords Daewoo dark red for lnwr / l&y coach lower panelling ???

I've 4 coaches to paint & i'm not a fan of phoenix paints I prefer rattle cans.

The used car dealers killed off Daewoo by snubbing the cars and never giving a good price.   This was in response to Daewoo's innovative parts, servicing and new car sales methods which were are threat to lots of garages if they had caught on and spread.

The knock on effect is that because there are hardly any Daewoo's left on the road, spares suppliers, and these include Halfords, don't stock Daewoo stuff any more.

Hence one of the purposes of the original post.

You could always put a search on Ebay and when someone lists a can, you can see the listing.

The second reason for the OP was that the colours on that original RAF Kinloss MRC list were so approximate or downright wrong.

This is a very handy and informative site with lots of information is there any chance we could have this thread pinned so we can come back to the list with out having to search for it?

Hi guys - does anyone have any suggestions for matches for NSE light blue? I believe the now OOP Lada Adriatic Blue was often used, but obviously now I need an alternative.

A suggestion for the light grey at the bottom of coaches would be good as well.

Thanks

From my own experiments, Vauxhall Mustard Yellow for Warning panel yellow, Lada Cream for Intercity Executive Light Grey, Vauxhall Flame Red for Rail Red you can see the results here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/71354-pendeford-sidings-summer-of-1988/page-17. I would like to find matches for Freight Triple grey next.

Bump, still after NSE paint colours please. Would be interested in colours for TTG as well.

Thanks!

My suggestion is to take a model with you to Halfords or a sample piece from the model. This is my own method, although this doesn't always guarantee a perfect match, hence why I've got a full can of Ford Polar grey in my cupboard. I was hoping it would be close to Rail Grey but alas it was too pale.

I have just read on another thread that Peugeot Cafe Noir is a good match for the shade of GWR Chocolate that Hornby use on their Collett and Hawksworth stock. It is darker than Rover Russet brown.

Rover Russett brown is closer to what is believed to be the average shade of Austerity Brown, hence nothing like GW Chocolate.

Here is a K40 I built from a kit and painted with Rover Russet Brown and Ford Sierra Beige. Always tricky to judge these things but it looks close enough to satisfy me. It also looks pretty close to the preserved Railcar at Swindon (for whatever that is worth).

What I do is purchase a tin/jar of Phoenix/Railmatch paint, thin and spray onto a primered flat surface. I then take this to my local car paint specialist and  he has a machine to analyse the colour correctly. He then mixes me raw colour in half litre and full litre quantities.

I use cellulose paint and thinners but most car paint facilities can supply acrylic paints as well.

I pay around £12 for a half litre of celly colour, but I'm in the trade, but the Railmatch jars are 35ml and you can get the equivalent of just over 14 jars to a half litre.

As for shelf life, I  have recently used a BR Maroon I had originally mixed in 2008 on a Stanier coach with great results. So long as the tin is sealed properly, shelf life is good.

I don't know the longevity of automotive acrylics as I don't use them.

Incidentally, when I had my BR Maroon mixed, the bloke told me that it was exceptionally close to Suzuki Antique Dark Red.

Here is the Stanier coach:

Is there an up to date version of this list?  I'm assuming a good number of the colours listed are no longer available.

Any info much appreciated.

Stan

Rather than losing this list on the thread in which it has crept into the conversation, here it is in its own right.

Updated today, Star Wars Day 2012.

From my local Halfords supersized store with the full range of rattle cans (not the pokey “Metro ones) the old RAF Kinloss MRC list from way back when, versus what is now available is shown below. My comments are in (italics). Where there is no comment it does not signify approval – I cannot comment on all of the colours. Item no longer available is struck through

BR Loco Green :- Rover Brooklands Green - Ford Laurel Green (poor match)
BR Diesel Light Green Band :- Ford Highland Green
BR Coach Carmine :- Ford Rosso Red - Vauxhall Carmine Red (both too “fire engineâ€)
BR Coach Cream :- Vauxhall Gazelle Beige - Talbot Jonquil
BR Coach Cream (well worn) :- Peugeot Antelope Beige (too dark)
BR Blood/Custard (approx colours) :- Ford Venetian Red - Talbot Jonquil
BR Loco / Coach Maroon :- Rover Damask Red - Vauxhall Burgundy Red - Ford Burgundy Red - Triumph Damson
BR Diesel Blue :- VW Pargas Blue - Ford Fjord Blue (Fjord blue is a very light blue like LNER blue!)
BR Deltic Blue :- Lada Adriatic Blue
BR Steam Loco Blue :- Peugeot Royal Blue
BR Loco Yellow Warning Panel :- Vauxhall Mustard Yellow (too orange)
BR EMU Green :- Jaguar British Racing Green
BR Wagon Grey :- VW Eisgrauen KJ94
BR Wagon Bauxite :- Alfa Romeo Bruno DE37
CR Steam Loco :- Peugeot Royal Blue
CR Dark Blue :- Rover Midnight Blue
GNR (I) (Ireland) :- Ford Wedgwood Blue
GWR Brunswick Green :- Peugeot Conifer (too dark)
GWR/BR Green :- Leyland Brooklands Green - Land Rover Deep Bronze Green - Ford Laurel Green
GWR Cream :- Ford Sahara Beige (too yellow) - Ford Sierra Beige (too white)
GWR Brown (Chocolate) :- Triumph Maple - Talbot Peugeot Cafe Noir (very maroon)- Rover Russet Brown (way too light)
LNER Garter Blue :- VW Pargas Blue Ford Fjord Blue
LMS Coronation Blue :- Rover Pageant mid-blue
LBSC Umber :- Rover Mexican Brown
LBSCR Stroudley Ochre :- BMC Tan
LBSCR Umber :- Vauxhall Brazil Brown
LMS/Midland Crimson Lake :- Ford Damask Red - Rover Damask Red
LMS Coronation Blue :- Rover Pageant Mid-Blue - Peugeot Royal Blue (Not sure here but there is a huge difference between these two)
LNWR Coach Plum Lower Panels :- Daewoo Dark Red
LNWR Coach Bluey-White Upper Panels :- Daewoo Casablanca White
LYR Coach Upper Panels :- Plastikote Nut Brown (Not Halfords – try B&Q?)
LYR Coach Plum Lower Panels :- Daewoo Dark Red
MR/LMS/BR Red :- Rover Damask Red
MR Red :- Rover Damask Red - Vauxhall Burgundy Red - Ford Burgundy Red - Triumph Damson
NSR Maroon :- Vauxhall Gambia Red
NSR Madder Lake :- Ford Lacquer Red
NER Coach Red :- Vauxhall Gambia Red
Stanier Coronation Blue :- Peugeot Royal Blue
SR Malachite Green Green :- Ford Laurel Green (never!) - Daihatsu Tropical Green
SR Dark Olive Green :- Land Rover Coniston Green
SR EMU Green :- Jaguar British Racing Green
SDJR Blue :- Rover Midnight Blue

If I were a betting man, the next colours to fall off that list are the Lada (Deltic Blue) – Lada is stopping production, and the Daewoo colours – no imports of Daewoo into this country for many years now.

It depends whether you are reliant on Halfords.

If you go to your local car paint mixers - look up Car Factors - you can get any obsolete colour mixed and put in an aerosal can.

If you ask to see their colour swatches you will be gob-smacked at the range available.

Just give them the Kinloss mrc reference number / name and there should be no problem.

Regards,

John Isherwood.

My local Halfrauds can mix a colour to a given paint code and supply it in aerosol form, although I'm not sure if they have as many colours in their database as a dedicated automotive paint supplier

As John has said automotive paint suppliers will have more colours/shades than you can possibly imagine

Don't quote me on this but I think some may even be able to match a colour from a sample

Does anyone know of a good aerosol match for BR olive green that's not from Railmatch or Phoenix? If nothing off the shelf, is there a BS/pantone type paint code I could use to get a tin made up?
