Although I do use a airbrush for weathering I try to avoid at all costs enamel paints because A, I don't have a specialist room for modeling (I'm at the kitchen table) & B, because it's messy cleaning the brush afterwards. I have a woodstore for the log burner in the garden which has a sheet of wood inside for spraying on. Full ventilation is provided by being outdoor & I've always got a gaurenteed quality finish on my models. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
RMweb Premium Roger Sunderland Posted October 10, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 10, 2015 Because if the paint is a reasonably close colour match I would rather get a consistently uniform smooth finish, which is pretty much guaranteed with Halfords paint (or Humbrol aerosols for that matter) than mess about for two hours setting up, mixing, cleaning, etc with the airbrush, then doing it all again the next evening to get the second coat on. I've never had a duff finish from a Halfords can, and I would rather have a close colour match than an exact one which either doesn't come out of the nozzle or comes out in lumps (yes Railmatch, I'm talking about you). I hate airbrushing. I would rather brush paint than airbrush. But that's my personal choice. Yes, I agree entirely. I own an Iwata airbrush which is excellent but it gets used for the more precise jobs like weathering. IMHO, the Halfords range of paints is the finest there is, never had a bad finish and lasts to the last drop, never clogging the spray head. Personally I will not buy Railmatch or Prescision in cans as. 1. They are enamels, far inferior to the industrial acrylics in Halfords range 2. They simply do not work effectively (and I've given them plenty of chances) Until somebody produces a range of railway colours as good as the Halfords paints I for one am happy to go for the closest match available, after all, as has already been stated, there is no such thing as a uniform colour. This was in response to Daewoo's innovative parts, servicing and new car sales methods which were are threat to lots of garages if they had caught on and spread. The knock on effect is that because there are hardly any Daewoo's left on the road, spares suppliers, and these include Halfords, don't stock Daewoo stuff any more. Hence one of the purposes of the original post. You could always put a search on Ebay and when someone lists a can, you can see the listing. I believe the now OOP Lada Adriatic Blue was often used, but obviously now I need an alternative. A suggestion for the light grey at the bottom of coaches would be good as well. My suggestion is to take a model with you to Halfords or a sample piece from the model. This is my own method, although this doesn't always guarantee a perfect match, hence why I've got a full can of Ford Polar grey in my cupboard. Here is a K40 I built from a kit and painted with Rover Russet Brown and Ford Sierra Beige. Always tricky to judge these things but it looks close enough to satisfy me. Jintyman Posted March 18, 2018 Share Posted March 18, 2018 What I do is purchase a tin/jar of Phoenix/Railmatch paint, thin and spray onto a primered flat surface. I then take this to my local car paint specialist and he has a machine to analyse the colour correctly. He then mixes me raw colour in half litre and full litre quantities. I use cellulose paint and thinners but most car paint facilities can supply acrylic paints as well. I pay around £12 for a half litre of celly colour, but I'm in the trade, but the Railmatch jars are 35ml and you can get the equivalent of just over 14 jars to a half litre. As for shelf life, I have recently used a BR Maroon I had originally mixed in 2008 on a Stanier coach with great results. So long as the tin is sealed properly, shelf life is good. I don't know the longevity of automotive acrylics as I don't use them. Incidentally, when I had my BR Maroon mixed, the bloke told me that it was exceptionally close to Suzuki Antique Dark Red. If you go to your local car paint mixers - look up Car Factors - you can get any obsolete colour mixed and put in an aerosal can.
