Poggy1165
I was actually on that tour with Clan Line, part of the reason being that I wanted to 'do' the Tiviot Dale line again. If it was not the last passenger train to go through it was certainly one of the last. Memory is a bit hazy but I seem to recall we went via Guide Bridge and somehow ended up at Northwich where we we waited for hours while the tender was filled through a drinking straw. (Or so it seemed). There then followed a very fast run through Chester and Wrexham to Shrewsbury. I had lost my connection there and so rode on the Wolverhampton where I managed to catch a train back to Mancland without much trouble. A grand day out as they say, and recall having a good laugh and joke with two or three fellow passengers - sadly I never got their names, let alone their addresses, but they were grand lads. I know some people don't like the Bulleid Pacifics, but I've always had a soft spot for them since that day.
62613
It wasn't actually subsidence if I remember correctly, I read somewhere that a crane (or other bit of construction kit) ended up in a void behind the tunnel lining and the line was closed on a precautionary basis whilst damage was assessed. Temporary then became permanent. Simon Correct; or that's what my brother said at the time; he was abooking lad in a couple of the Stockport LNWR boxes then. RJS1977
shots of the Brinnington area in 1968. the m60 now cuts through this section so I take it this section of motorway was a later addition to the part past Tiviot dale. Yes, the M63 only went as far as what is now J27. The remaining eastern section of what is now the M60 has only been completed in the last 15 years or so since I left Stockport. It was very convenient that the accident with the crane made the trackbed east of Stockport available for the motorway, although it now takes best part of an hour to get from Bredbury to Stockport by road in the rush hour..... RMweb Premium 65179 Posted May 25, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 25, 2012 Ok, as requested a few photos of the Tiviot dale/Portwood area. The photos below show the bridges including the bridge over the River Tame and the rest of Portwood Viaduct to just short of Portwood drops/stone terminal. They aren't great photos, but they illustrate the area. They were mainly intended as detail photos so I don't have many overall shots, not that the proximity of the motorway allows many on that side anyway. We start off with a few views of the bridge over the Tame (the confluence of the Tame and Goyt (i.e. the start of the Mersey) is under/alongside the motorway now, but was once alongside the ramp for the Tiviot Dale station approach). ] ] A view after removal of the bridge Next one of those buildings which no one would believe if you modelled it: a ramshackle extended pub (the Mill Stone Inn)which then served as a small engineering concern on an almost triangular site tucked between road, railway, mill and perched above an abandoned mill race. Then a few views of the various bridges A reminder of the tannery that used to be down the road I've got a few views of what was left of the stone terminal (i.e. the rebuilt coal drops) which I'll post in the next few days if anyone is interested. Michael Delamar
have a watch of this film from 1946, interesting scenes of the Guyt and Tame at Stockport, I think it just shows the railway bridge at Tiviot dale. skip to about 4mins in, past the part on how great Liverpool is http://film.britishcouncil.org/merseyside
Michael Delamar
edit that, it does, at 5min 15 the camera pans round from looking at Howard street road bridge towards the railway bridge (or rather the road bridge infront of the railway bridge) where the motorway crosses in front of now and where the 2 rivers join. Edwin_m
My understanding was it's under Mersey Square shopping centre (hence the name!) No, the Goyt/Mersey is alongside the motorway (presumably diverted southwards when the motorway was built, though the old bridge on Howards Street must span the original course so it can't have moved much) and the Tame comes underneath the motorway so they join at a particularly uninspiring spot 100m or so upstream of Mersey Square. Here is a Bing map.

RMweb Premium 65179 Posted May 26, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 26, 2012 (edited) A few more photos of the Portwood area in 1992. They all show the remains of the stone terminal after demolition of the structures added after the site ceased to be coal drops: By this point the line had been cut back to the replacement stone terminal near Bredbury. bennyboy
That picture of the Georges Rd scrapyard is priceless! I didn't even realise that it existed at the time, but I've been fascinated by it ever since I saw a picture of it in a book. Talking of which there is one called M63 Motorway through a Town by William B Ball, which although it is about the construction of the motorway, it does feature some great photos of the railway as it was in the early 80s. Also all those pictures of the Brinnington Tunnel had reminded me of the odd fact that a line of concrete sleepers were left in place decades after the line was lifted for some reason.

buckdancer
Michael - thanks for these photos. I liked the Lowry one and so went off Googling to see what others are around - thanks for the inspiration and an interesting half hour or so!
Michael Delamar
I think the only section I havent seen any shots on without looking in any books so far, is the junction outside the shed. and any trackplan of that area and the shed itself. pharrc20
I can see the refuse siding, the stone terminal was/is separate on the old alignment to Tiviot Dale The stone terminal is located behind what used to be Quaffers nightclub and the DIY store. If you go round the back of the DIY store you can see the buffer stops and further up the line the unloading shed. Cheers Paul
