coachmann
Originally I painted a loco black and Ralph Jackson made me a set of plates named 'Crewe'. When I learned that BR was to name 56133 'Crewe Locomotive Works' after it was built I and 'Rail' put in an effort to persuade BR to paint the loco LNWR lined black.....to no avail unfortunately. The next move was to simplify the Roundel Group's three-tone grey livery to light grey and charcoal black with a touch of red lining, but again the idea fell on stony ground. Ah well... coachmann
The one I did in black was amongst a number of models I painted in MR maroon, SR Malachite, LNER apple green, and GER blue. All were published in 'Rail' around the mid 1980s but I no longer have my back numbers. The models did have some influence as we discovered later. porkie
Oooh im not a big fan of the class 66, but that loadhaul livery suits it well Here's my class 50 if they were still in use when intercity swallow was being out shopped.
Ragtag
LoadHaul sits very well on that 66. Tempted to knock one up myself now. Out of interest what scale is that in? Looks larger than 4mm.
westie7
I've always liked the idea of RES on a 37/4, might just see if I've got a spare body
RMweb Gold Richard_A Posted June 24, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 24, 2012 Here is my unfinished silver fox/Hornby/Heljan kestrel in blue with small yellow panels, I need to pick out the window frames in silver, apply transfers handrails glazing etc but I think it looks quite good on it so far. RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted June 24, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 24, 2012 I have often wondered what the class 50 looked like in Swallow livery. It does suit the design very well...

Yeah I was thinking of doing my surplus 4mm scale 66 in loadhaul to pop on ebay. Might do it triple grey loadhaul as a change but my mind isn't made up. The one on the pic is a G scale commission I did a while back. Cav
The Black Hat
A few years ago, I came up with a way of getting some interest for my first exhibition layout, Briganton. The layout had plenty of action with loading chutes for ballast trains and with a station for terminating trains. However, set in privitisation the layout could feature a few old liveries mixed with new ones just on trains that were never run by such companies. Each train carried the name of a charity, with one being used for that day. People would give a donation to see one come on from a list, including some famous engines like Flying Scotsman. The idea worked really well and is something I might do again in the future. However, some repaints were basic and some engines have been sold on. It hasnt stopped me as now, with subtle changes, steam engines are the ones that have been rebuilt. But first, here are some diesel examples... Regional Railways class 50. The idea was that these were transfered for transpennine work that became cascaded down to long distance passenger. Middlesbro - Carlisle, Settle - Carlisle, etc. Oddly, no class 08 was ever painted into Loadhaul! (Everyones favourite...) So I decided to do one and think its quite a good one to do. How about a Transrail class 25. The class survived on a little further in Scotland and even more so if a departmental 24. So I thought perhaps one or two for light departmental workings would be good but with the companies split, it meant a choice of what to go for. Three tone grey with Big T was the answer. And so on into Privitisation. Arriva were the franchise for the north, but with locomotive haulage making a comeback, it was a little surprising Arriva didnt request a matching tractor for the role of the S+C job. So my layout had another service, with matching 37... Going one better.... how about Scotrail keeping the 47/7 push and pull idea, only that the 47s were worn and needed upgrading. Answer, Scotrail National Express Swoosh class 57... obviously! Sorry pics are not of brilliant quality but these are from a few years ago. Hope you found it entertaining....
The Black Hat
A few more in case anyone was interested.... Some engines done up for the Weardale Railway, akin to the idea railways did paint some for their own identies. And then the really subtle ones: With Tornado being done in British railways apple green and looking good, I wondered what would happen if you look the BR lining of early and late crest and adopted that for BR apple green. The result - a rather smart pair of engines. 60164 Northern Star and 60540 Orpheus.
SRman
A 'might-have-been' livery from the Western Region, a maroon Hymek: I chose the coach stock roundel and some off-white numbers (I do have some etched stainless steel ones to use if I wish, though). Still to go are a few minor tweaks to the yellow warning panels, some headcodes, a coat or two of varnish and some flush glazing. It is posed beside a green Heljan model for comparison. The model itself is an old Triang-Hornby one that I have fitted two of the pre-ringfield metal motor bogies in and through wired each so it has eight-wheel drive and pickup. I have also fitted separte end handrails, turned brass horns and an etched brass replacement roof panel with fan grille and fan. I will eventually add a decoder, although I suspect I will need something reasonably hefty to cope with these old motors. It does run quite smoothly and quietly - not quite in the same league as the Heljan one but not bad at all. It will haul anything I put behind it. Edit: Here is a later photo of the Triang Hymek on its own. Edited March 20, 2021 by SRman
47475
The Class 50 in Regional Railways livery actually looks surprisingly good! Certainly smarter than the real ones which were outshopped in BR Triple Green & LoadHaul liveries in preservation!

the penguin of doom
Years ago I did a Warship in revised NSE livery which I thought really suited it. I also did a class 29 in Red Stripe Railfreight which looked.......... "Different" Alas, mine too have long gone. It has been suggested that my spare DP2 conversikn be outshopped in Porterbrook Purple, but I don't think I could put it through that!..... Cheers. Sean. RMweb Premium Popular Post John M Upton Posted July 25, 2012 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 25, 2012 (edited) Now consigned to my display cabinet but a few years ago I read somewhere (I think it was one of Kevin Roberstons 'Leader' books) that there was a plan to outshop some new build West Country/Battle of Britain Pacifics from Brighton Works in BR mixed traffic lined black so I bagged a cheap Hornby model and set about it with the paint: I wasn't exactly sure about final decals so it carries the BR emblem one side and the earlier BRITISH RAILWAYS lettering on the other.
