Old Valentia Railway in Kerry

Had a great day out at Glenbeigh Beach the other day and climbed up to the old Farranfore to Valentia track bed on the cliffs.  Always wanted to get up on to the old Glensk Viaduct that over looks the sea.  Had to hack my way through brambles to get on to the deck though!

One of the old approach tunnels - note the telegraph insulators still in situ.

The other tunnel - Glenbeigh beach can be seen in the background.  This view provides a look across the bay toward the Dingle Peninsular - it's no small wonder the people leaving for other countries during the emigration years wept openly on their journeys.  Who wouldn't if you knew were going to have to leave this place!

An imposing structure and looks like 'Petro' got there before me!

Still in great nick for something that has been exposed to the full force of the Atlantic without maintenance for fifty years!

Looks like it hasn't seen a lick of paint for a very long time - note the scratched in date of 1978.  The makers plates have long since vanished.

Couldn't resist including these photos of the old wreck on the beach - it has been there as long as living memory.  It really is a timeless spot of outstanding natural beauty and I'm lucky to live here in County Kerry.

Excellent set, Used to camp just over the back of sand dunes in Glenbeigh back in the '70's. The wreck is the Schooner Sunbeam. A Wooden Schooner Built in 1860 by Walters in Exmouth. She was owned by her Builder up to the late 1870s and was then bought by Richard Kearon of Arklow. In January 1903 when on a Voyage from Kinvara to Cork she was driven ashore in a storm and wrecked with no loss of life.

the tower at the top of the beach gave way some in 2011 after standing watch for 160 years. What a beautiful day you had as well. thanks for bringing back some great memories. ust visit there again....
