I haven't been down to Eastleigh for a while - is there a "good" day in the week for freight and other interesting workings?...hopefully it will coincide with AC models being open - definitely worth a visit...

Today GBRf's 'Glory to Ukraine' 66708 could be found on the Bescot NDS circuit, so I popped to Stenson Jn this afternoon to see it top the 6G45 Toton North Yard to Bescot UES, with 66710 for company.

GBRf 'Glory to Ukraine' 66708 & 66710 - 6G45, Stenson

Thanks,

Jack.

Ex-'Euro Shed' 66028 (with repainted EWS maroon cabsides) leads UK Railtours' 'The Powerful Pieman Panorama' tour ECS through Attenborough earlier today. The tour had run from Toton North Yard (where the shed was attached) via Doncaster to Nottingham and was headed for Toton TMD when I saw it, to detach the shed. The skips either end were 67016 & 67013.

DB 66028 & 67016 - 5Z30, Attenborough

Thanks,

Jack.

Several 66s that have passed through Brighouse in the last few days...

On 22nd May 2022 Freightliner 66545 returning after overnight engineering work on the Calder Valley line working as 6Y30 Greetland Junction to Doncaster Up Decoy Yard...

In a reasonably uniform set of open wagons, I kind of like the odd, one of a kind wagon, at the end of this rake.

On 24th May 2022 Colas 66850 'David Maidment OBE' leads 70801 with 6E32, Colas Ribble Rail at Preston to Lindsey Oil Refinery, discharged bitumen tanks through Brighouse.

Colas 66s have never been regular visitors in this part of West Yorkshire, on either the trans-Pennine route through Huddersfield or the Calder Valley line, so this was a slightly unusual combination, for which there is an explanation*.

716260924_66850708016E32Brighouse240520221-RMweb.jpg.9fe5affb618da14a5c0e4966bad8af9a.jpg

* The Explanation - On 23rd May 2022 the loaded bitumen tanks (6M32) from Lindsey to Preston was allocated to 70801.

Evidently the 70 experienced a loss of coolant and was declared a failure between Hall Royd Junction and Stansfield Hall Junction at Todmorden, having just diverged from the Calder Valley line onto the route over Copy Pit towards Blackburn and Preston.

I would surmise that the driver had used his route knowledge to halt 6M32 where he did.  This ensured that the Calder Valley line wasn't blocked and also before the loaded train tackled the stiff gradients to reach the summit at Copy Pit, where 'rescue' might have been more of a challenge.

As it was, it took several hours before a '1Z99' rescue locomotive in the form of Colas 66850 was able to travel from Doncaster to reach the failed 6M32.  Following recovery of 70801 6M32, which should have reached Preston at 08.11, finally reached its destination at +515 minutes at 16.46.

I presume at that stage it was decided to run 6E32 from Preston back to Lindsey, these are the discharged tanks from the previous time that 6M32 has run, today, ie 24th May.

Hence the unusual sight of 66850 leading the failed 70801 with 6E32 through Brighouse on 24th May 2022.
