RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted July 24, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 24, 2014 Yes indeed, even on the mainline in some cases. Here is a lovely shot of one at work ahead of an Ivatt 2MT. How is that for a dinky little engineering train? Eminently modellable. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Erewash_Valley_line_Up_Inspection_Saloon_near_Stoneyford_Junction_geograph-2839246-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg All of my trips were post-steam, our loco of choice was a 25 because you could take them almost anywhere, but Bescot seemed to think we would take anything they had to hand. I did Birmingham - Coventry - Gibbet Hill - Coundon Road with a 40, Walsall - Tamworth HL (via Coleshill - Hams Hall Power Station - Whitacre) - New Street with a 45 and Wolverhampton - Ironbridge - Donnington with a 47. At Donnington, then disused, the driver stopped and came back to us to say that he wouldn't go any further because he couldn't see if there were any rails in the undergrowth.
br-nse-fan
Any chance these made it to the South West at all in BR Blue/Grey days? I'm tying to find justification for getting one of these... and unfortunately 'Rule 1' won't be enough to convince my wallet to part with the probable $100+ for one coach... Ressaldar
I have just finished this one again it is a Sidelines 7mm kit, the only modifications to the kit are the heater vents, the removal of the droplight from the central end windows and no steam heat pipe. The large EWS and the triple head logo are by Fox and the lettering on the ends and the running number are mine via laser printing onto Crafty Computer paper. Hope you like it. cheers Mike

In the last few years of steam at Bescot it seemed as it was a job for either of Bescot's green Ivatt class 2 moguls 46522 or 46527.

More likely to be a WR one - but we will be accepting the same compromise on Abbotswood! Phil Edited July 25, 2014 by Phil Bullock

Bristol_Rich
An inspection saloon similar to the model was allocated to Bristol Bath Road and was a common sight at Bristol Temple Meads. I don't remember seeing it in BG but here is a pic of it in its IC guise. http://80srail.zenfolio.com/p636089032/h1602EBFF#h1602ebff Edited July 26, 2014 by rich_eason

Swindon 123
BR had a couple painted in LMS livery in the 1990's. One of them was 45030 which was at the open day at Hereford in May 1991. Here are a couple of shots of it still at Hereford in November that year. The only difference in livery to the Bachmann LMS version that I have noticed is the yellow ends and maybe extra lettering. It has been fitted with air brakes and ETH. (Not me thinks fitted by the LMS). A close up of the steps in the down position. Paul J.
Swindon 123
Have found some more photos but this time of a BR built LMS design Inspection saloon TDB999503. I don't know if they were identical to the LMS built one but here are the photos. There are a lot of them taken at Manchester Victoria taken on 29th June 1986. Unfortunately the parcels van blocking the view of the other side never moved whilst I was there, so I only got shots of one side. It's still only vac braked, but dual heated and by this time had acquired a mixture of roof vents. These are some early scans of my negatives and are rather low resolution. Given the interest in the new Bachmann model I'll revisit and rescan the negs and put them on my Flickr site and let you know here when they're on it. EDIT. I have rescanned the above photos to higher resolution and they can be found on my Fickr site at, https://www.flickr.com/photos/95430950@N07/sets/72157646077882385/ Also the date for these photos was 1984 not 1986. davknigh
Were these inspection saloons ever done up in carmine and cream? I'm just wondering about the period between '48 and '56 - would they have stayed in LMS colours with BR crests or retained the whole LMS livery? Cheers, David

GordonC
Which liveries did these observation saloons carry in the 80s and 90s? The place to look for photos of such vehicles is http://departmentals.com/ This is Scotrail, 45020 but you may have to sign up to view http://departmentals.com/photo/45020a Paul This comes from the site The Engineer's Inspection Saloons were built at LMS Wolverton Works. 45043, 45044 and 45045 in 1940 45046, 45047 and 45048 in 1941 45028, 45029 and 45030 in 1942 45020, 45021 and 45026 in 1944 45035 and 45036 in 1947. 45043 was scrapped probably Health and Safety Regulation. 45035 is a mystery.
