Popular Post Halvarras
Some of my earliest piccies using the Instamatic camera I received the previous Christmas. Colour film was a luxury I could only afford periodically...... Home turf - a couple at Truro, firstly D1928 in April 1969, just before I got on the train and grateful for haulage by a Brush and not yet another Warship or Western (yes yes, I know........D1024 on the right was camera-shy too!): And D1723 in much the same position 31st March 1970 - I saw this approaching the station from some distance away and pedalled like fury to get there in time - luckily it was held at the signal for a while but had started moving by the time I was in position, and Instamatic cameras were hopeless at capturing subjects moving left to right, hence the cut-off: Summer Saturdays could be spent either at the station or my favourite lineside location at Tomperrow (it says 'Temperrow' on the bridge plaque these days, but road signs to Caerhays are also spelt Carhayes and Caerhayes!) midway between Truro and Chacewater. The twin Maybachs or MANs powering down trains could be heard roaring upgrade from Penwithers Junction with 12 on but what we locals really wanted to see was one of these, because it could be something exotic from beyond the Western Region.....unlike a hydraulic! Not so on this occasion, it was Old Oak's D1639 on 31st May 1969. Still a cop though!: Moment of shame - 1640 about to couple up to the short-lived Par - Park Royal Freightliner on 2nd April 1970. The end of the rake of 5 wagons just creeps into view on the left. Despite this train being berthed right alongside Par station, no photos of it there appear to exist, and I am clearly guilty of not shooting the thing on that day myself (and the other time when I photographed green 1589 in the short headshunt visible on the right, ready to back on - I don't think I've scanned that one). No point moaning about other people not photographing it when I could have, but didn't!!: Finally (for now) this one was a real scoop for a Cornwall-based spotter who managed to grab a memorable day's spotting at Reading on 5th April 1969. D1106 was so immaculate I saw it come into view from the Didcot/Oxford direction at the far end of the long straight section into Reading station and knew it had to be something special. D1929 behind, but forget that, look at the shine on this!!: As a footnote, the only recorded visit of a D11xx Brush to Cornwall in pre-TOPS days was when Gateshead's D1102 worked the down 1V70 'Cornishman' through to Penzance on 23rd January 1970. I missed it, so there are no prizes for guessing which D11xx became the last one I required..... I finally caught up with it at Kings Cross in autumn 1972. Viewing large doesn't do them any favours but they're all period pieces now. Hope you like! 23
